1 Aim & Objectives Asia Literacy Teacher Professional Learning Residential Arts Program The aim of this program is to enable teachers to implement the cross-curriculum requirement of the Australian curriculum related to Asian perspectives embedded across the arts in year levels F-12. This program is delivered as an intensive residential program over 11 days in China that will enable participants to: 1. Develop a deep understanding of the culture, history and socio-politics of Chinese society. 2. Develop a range of contextualised narratives to support Asian perspectives in the design and implementation of: a. engaging and flexible learning experiences for individuals and groups, b. learning experiences that develop language, literacy and numeracy, c. challenging learning experiences, d. learning experiences that value diversity, 3. Support personal development of students and participation in society within the context of global citizenship and inter-cultural understanding. 4. Contribute effectively to professional teams 5. Demonstrate a sustained commitment to reflective practice and ongoing professional renewal Curriculum Relevance The thematic structure of the program, as outlined below lends itself to a high level of flexibility in addressing the needs of a number of curriculum areas with an emphasis on the Arts. This program will contain Asian perspectives that can be utilised in the teaching of the Arts as well as English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Economics, Business, Civics and Citizenship, Health & PE, Languages, Design & Technology, ICT, literacy and numeracy. 2 Structure The daily program is structured around thematic learning experiences that will enable participants to learn through inquiry by: 1. engaging with the diversity of Chinese people, 2. reflecting, sharing and documenting experiences in collaboration with peers using a range of technologies, 3. collecting artefacts to support Asian narratives in the classroom, 4. developing professional contacts and networks in China, and 5. learning about information sources to support future classroom engagement with Asia using ICT. All participants will receive a pre-departure study guide that aims to: focus attention on preparation, covering the program outline, organisation and logistics. act as a guide to background reading and research, to consider participant learning goals and the learning needs of students in relation to Asia. focus learning interests around specific activities during the school visit to optimise the value of the school visit activity. stimulate planning in relation to specific content, artefacts and professional networks. Day One. Arrive in Beijing. Program introduction and administration. Attend a welcome dinner hosted by the Program Leader. Day Two. AL-W3500 History of China 1 (CPD Hours 4) Participants will learn about Chinese history, dating back to 700BC with the construction of the initial watchtowers and fortifications that form the cornerstones of what is now The Great Wall. This will involve a visit to The Great Wall, with small group discussions. AL-W1020 Rural China 1 (CPD Hours 2) Participants will visit a rural region of China, north of Beijing and will have an opportunity to observe agricultural practices in an area that specialises in orchards. The group will pass through rural villages that accommodate local farming families. Day Three. AL-W3200 The Ming Dynasty (4 CPD Hours) This activity commences with an introduction to the urban design of Beijing based on a system of concentric walls with Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City at the centre. Participants will explore Tiananmen Square before entering the Forbidden City. With a history dating back to 1420AD, this site offers a range of learning experiences covering various aspects of the Ming Dynasty such as architecture, symbolism, language, spiritual belief systems, societal structure, art, crafts, and fashion.

3 AL-W3201: The Qing Dynasty (2 CPD Hours) The Qing Dynasty ( ) was the last imperial dynasty in China and the site of the Summer Palace enables an exploration of the history and culture of China throughout this period. The site has an adventurous history with evidence of many interactions with European colonialism. Day Four. AL-W2003: Exploring Chinese Art 3 (8 CPD Hours) This activity focuses on Chinese art at the 798 Space Art District, Beijing where participants will explore: 1. Chinese aesthetics, 2. Chinese politics and history expressed in art, 3. Differences between traditional and contemporary Chinese art, 4. The impact of Communism on Chinese art, 5. The impact of modernisation, industrialisation and globalisation in China. This is an opportunity to see a wide variety of Chinese art in one location including paintings, photography and sculptures. Many galleries provide access to artists during the visit. This is an opportunity to collect information, artefacts and contact details including online resources to support classroom activities. This session will conclude with a group discussion. Day Five. AL-W2002: Exploring Chinese Art 2 ( CPD Hours) This activity focuses on Chinese art at the China National Art Museum, Beijing where participants will explore: 1. Chinese aesthetics, 2. Chinese politics and history expressed in art, 3. Differences between traditional and contemporary Chinese art, 4. The impact of Communism on Chinese art, 5. The impact of modernisation, industrialisation and globalisation in China.

4 This is an opportunity to see a wide variety of Chinese art in one location including paintings, photography and sculptures. Many galleries provide access to artists during the visit. This is an opportunity to collect information, artefacts and contact details including online resources to support classroom activities. This session will conclude with a group discussion. Day Six. High speed day train Beijing to Shanghai Experience the world s most modern, hi-tech railway system and enjoy the scenery of the Chinese countryside on a 5 hour day trip between Beijing and Shanghai. Day Seven. AL-W1015 Explore Modern China (8 CPD Hours) This activity is a self-directed exploration of modern China through the streets of Shanghai. Participants will be provided with maps and individualised guidance from the Program Leader. They will then set out in small groups to explore the city and meet some of its people. Participants will be able to visit Nanjing Rd, Peoples Square, The French Concession, Yu Garden, The Bund, Pudong business district, Huangpu River, the Jade Temple, Moganshan Rd Art precinct, small local markets and residential areas surrounding the Shanghai CBD. This activity will expose participants to the people of Shanghai as they gain experience in negotiation skills, using basic language and engaging with local people. Xi an Optional Substitute for Day 6 & 7 AL-W3400 The Tang Dynasty (10 CPD Hours) This activity is an immersion into the Tang Dynasty from 200BC. This Dynasty was based around the city of Xi an and was responsible for unifying China as a nation. This activity will cover a variety of sites including a factory that demonstrates the original techniques used in the design and manufacture of the Terracotta Warriors, and the archaeological sites of the Terracotta Warriors. Participants will also pass through the city of Xi an and learn about the ethnic diversity of this city and its geographic and historic importance, situated at the eastern extremity of the Silk Roads. AL-W3401 Xi an City Wall (3 CPD Hours) Participants will learn about the history and architecture of this ancient city wall with its origins in the Tang Dynasty (200BC) and its major construction in the early Ming Dynasty ( AD). The wall provides a vantage point to appreciate the urban geography of the city and cultural features such as the Drum and Bell Towers. The contemporary growth of the city is also explored within the context of the planned urbanisation of China s population and the growth of this city over the next decade by 25% to a population of 10 million people.

5 Day Eight. AL-W3000 Shanghai Museum (4 CPD Hours) This museum represents many aspects of Chinese art history through ancient bronze artefacts, calligraphy, sketches and paintings, ancient sculpture and jade artefacts, coins and paper currency, Ming and Qing Dynasty furniture, local histories, and minority nationalities art and artefacts. Some evidence of Australia s interaction with Asia during the nineteenth century can be found in the currency gallery. AL-W3001 Communist Party Museum (2 CPD Hours) The Communist Party Museum is located on the site of the First Congress of the Communist Party, a short walk from the Shanghai Museum. This is a fascinating history with many artefacts, photographs and stories about events and personalities. Day Nine. AL-W2001: Exploring Chinese Art 1 (8 CPD Hours) This activity focuses on Chinese art at the Yuanmingyuan Rd and The Bund where participants will explore: 6. Chinese aesthetics, 7. Chinese politics and history expressed in art, 8. Differences between traditional and contemporary Chinese art, 9. The impact of Communism on Chinese art, 10. The impact of modernisation, industrialisation and globalisation in China. This is an opportunity to see a wide variety of Chinese art in one location including paintings, photography and sculptures. 6 Day Ten. AL-W1015 Explore Modern China (8 CPD Hours) This activity is a self-directed exploration of modern China through the streets of Shanghai. Participants will be provided with maps and individualised guidance from the Program Leader. They will then set out in small groups to explore the city and meet some of its people. (1 CPD Hour) The Program Leader will host a formal dinner and this wil provide an opportunity to review and discuss the program as a group. Day 11. End of program administration, participants will depart Shanghai for Australia

7 CPD Hours This program addresses supports the implementation of the Australian curriculum and the Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers. Standards specifically addressed by this program include standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 10. A CPD certificate will be issued to participants for 60 CPD hours. Whilst the Association will endeavour to deliver the program in accordance with this format, we reserve the right to modify the format where logistical limitations or other events beyond our control require modifications to the program. 8 Asia Literacy Scholarship Fund The Asia Literacy Scholarship Fund offers scholarships and prizes to promote knowledge & understandings of Asia amongst young Australians. The fund works by raising public donations and supporting students in primary and secondary schools, as well as pre-service and postgraduate teachers.
