[COURSE INFORMATION] COURSE DESCRIPTION & GOALS This course is a survey of the art and culture of Asia, including China, Korea, and Japan from the Neolithic period to the 21st century. The course consists of five areas: (1) Pottery of China, Korea, and Japan; (2) Origin and Transmission of Buddhism; (3) Architecture of China, Korea, and Japan; and (4) painting of China, Korea, and Japan; and (5) Contemporary Asian Art. Representative art works in diverse media, including ceramics, painting, sculpture, and architecture from different cultures, classes, religions, and periods will be explored. The stylistic evolution, technical development, and iconographic features of the major art of each period will be examined in their historical, sociopolitical, and cross-cultural contexts. PREREQUISITE No previous knowledge of Asian art, history, or language is expected. Attendance and Participation (20%): Regular attendance at lectures and field trips is a minimum requirement for the class. Short, written questions on readings will be occasionally required in class, without notice. Active class participation is strongly encouraged and will improve your grade. Research and Presentation (10%): Students are assigned to conduct research on two art works and give a short-presentation during a field trip. A research COURSE REQUIREMENTS paper (single-spaced, two-page) needs to be turned by the following Monday after the field trip. Exams (70%): There will be two exams (20% each) and a final exam (30 %); all exams consist of slide identifications, short answer questions, and essay questions.

Sunglim Kim is assistant professor of art history and Asian Middle Eastern Studies at Dartmouth College. She received her PhD from University of California, Berkeley in Her research interests include the rise of INSTRUCTOR S PROFILE consumer culture in late Joseon dynasty and the role of the professional nouveau riche, the so-called jungin in the production, distribution, collection, and consumption of art in 18 th and 19 th century Korea; the shaping of images of Korea and her people during the Japanese colonial period; and the use of visual space as political tool in modern and contemporary Korea.
