1 Great Path Manchester Community College Elective Course Descriptions Art: Graphic Art 2D Design is an introductory course providing a strong foundation for all applied and fine arts classes. Students will study the basic Elements and Principles of Design. This hands on class will cover compositional problems, color, space and volume using a variety of media including digital photography and image manipulation using I pad apps. Students will begin working on a portfolio. 2D Design has many applications for the 21st century learner covering universal concepts that apply to numerous industries, including marketing, engineering, architecture, and other applied arts. Understanding twodimensional design helps students make more aesthetically informed choices as consumers. Art I Art I offers students the basics in the language, history, production and criticism of art. These basics are important for students to gain awareness and understanding necessary for the appreciation and production of fine and applied arts in the 21 st century. In Art I students begin to prepare a portfolio investigating two and three-dimensional art media including graphite, charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, watercolor, acrylics as well as clay. Introduction to Studio Arts, Prerequisite: Art 1 or instructor s permission A course covering the fundamentals of visual art through hands-on experience. The course includes basic design and composition, color theory, drawing and a thorough exploration of the creative process through the use of a wide variety of media and techniques including drawing, water media, collage and fiber. Through an in-depth look at techniques, movements and artists from ancient art up to the present day, students will develop a personal body of work for their portfolio. This class is offered to GPA and MCC students. Honors Art History (not offered for or ) Credits: 1 High School Prerequisite: Art I, Intro to Studio Art, Graphic Art or instructor s permission This course is an exploration of significant movements and trends in the arts of the west from the twentieth century to the present, covering modern to post modernism. This course is interdisciplinary in nature and will consider how diverse cultural and socio-economic influences have helped shape the history and the arts of twentieth century. The format of the class will include power points, films, class

2 discussions, as well as library and internet research. Historical and art historical knowledge will be applied to the students own creative art projects. Ceramics I Ceramics I is an introductory class in the study of clay, offered as a foundation course designed to build skills in hand construction, sculpting, and throwing on the potter s wheel with an emphasis on craftsmanship. Students will demonstrate a utilization of fundamental design skills in clay, and experience the creative process from the conception of the idea through its final execution. Ceramics II Prerequisite: Ceramics I or instructor s permission Experimentation with, and further development of skills in a variety of hand-forming, wheel-throwing, firing and glazing techniques. The class focuses on processes involved in creating both utilitarian and sculptural works. Students will take ownership of the creative process developing ideas and executing them. Culinary Arts: Culinary Arts I Introduces techniques and procedures required to prepare basic foods in a hands-on kitchen laboratory environment. Emphasis is placed on use of equipment, identification of a standard quality product, and the importance of methods by which to develop sanitary working habits. Culinary Arts II, 3.0 MCC Credit Prerequisite: Culinary Arts I Students will gain a deeper understanding of cooking techniques and kitchen fundamentals. They will produce food items from various units to include; Potatoes and Starches, Vegetables and Fruits, Breakfast foods, Poultry, Meat and Game, and International Cuisine. By the end of the course students will be proficient in kitchen safety and sanitation and will be able to manufacture a complete meal from raw products. Bake Shop I, 3.0 MCC Credit Prerequisite: Culinary Arts I The course presents an introduction to baking and pastry with intensive hands-on laboratory training in a quantity food environment. The course competencies concentrate on the production and quality

3 control of baked goods that are used in hotels, restaurants, resorts and institutions. Laboratory classes emphasize basic ingredients and production techniques for breads, rolls, folded dough s, batters, basic cakes, pies and creams. Physical Education: Team Sports Strength and Conditioning Credits: 1.0 High School Prerequisite: teacher recommendation Grade Level: Health: Health Education This course is designed to assist students in obtaining accurate information, developing lifelong positive attitudes and behaviors and making wise decisions related to their personal health. Study will include personal and community health, mental, emotional and social health, injury prevention and safety, nutrition and physical activity, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, growth and development and sexual health. Central themes are the acceptance of personal responsibility for lifelong health, respect for and promotion of the health of others, an understanding of the process of growth and development and informed use of health related information, products and services. Health in the 21 st Century (not offered in ) Prerequisite: Health or instructor s permission This course is designed to assist students in obtaining information regarding a wide range of health care professions. Study will include a segment on study skills, resume writing, a library and research segment and discussion concerning specific health care career paths. Emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary learning strategies correlating clinical and didactic education necessary for all healthcare providers. Examples of some of the health care careers this course will focus on are medical doctor, nurse, medical assistant, physician assistant, dentist, dental hygienist dental assistant, occupational therapist, physical therapist, recreational therapist, veterinarian, surgical tech, radiographer and optometrist.

4 Music: Vocal Ensemble Prerequisite: audition This is a performance based class year long course, meaning that attendance for choir concerts is mandatory. The course addresses music fundamentals such as singing, singing in harmony, being part of an ensemble, reading music, improvising and composing. There is no prerequisite experience required. Repertoire that the choir sings is subject to change each semester. Music Technology This course explores music fundamentals through increasingly complex projects in GarageBand software. Through composition and application of rhythm, harmony, piano skills, song form, microphone technique, creation of hip hop beats, electronic sound and acoustic sounds students will be able to create unique musical works and describe music in a deeper way. Music Appreciation This music appreciation course focuses on equipping students with the knowledge to identify and describe the multitude of cultures which have contributed music to the American panorama. From slave song of the American south to film music of Hollywood the student completes listening recognition assignments, takes assessments from the text book, and works on individual research to apply core aspects that lead to more mature music appreciation. Piano Grade Level: 9-12 Technology: Graphic Design Prerequisite: Computer Applications or Teacher recommendation This allows your students to explore a variety of high end programs used in computer programing, architecture, and design careers throughout the world. Using Adobe Photoshop CS6, students manipulate photos and other images just like magazine and website artists do. We also, use to free programs that can be brought home! First, we create our own movies using Alice! This program introduces your student into the ever popular field of computer programming. Last but not least, we

5 then create our own dream homes using a program called Google Sketch up. After completing their houses we then enter them into Google Maps to be used in the Google 3D World! Computer Applications How do computers work? What exactly is the Internet? What is RAM/ROM? These are one of many questions answered while your students take this introduction level computer course. Everyone uses computers today but few know how they function and many don t know how to use some of the most common and widely used programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Publisher. We will delve into all four creating unique final projects for them all- Word: All About Me Poster, Power Point: Presentation on a World Issue, Excel: Running Your Own Business, and Publisher: Create A Travel Brochure/Your Own Business Cards! Media Technology Why do people celebrities and people on magazines always look flawless? How many ads do you see every time you get on the Internet? Notice those ads on your Facebook newsfeed? Media Technology looks into the world of media and ads in society. You will learn a about the sociology (study of people) and psychology (study of the mind) of why ads are created the way they are. You will even create your own commercial using all the skills and subtly marketers use to advertise their products. Programming Foundations: Prerequisite: Computer Applications or teacher recommendation Like Angry Birds or Temple Run? Heard of companies like Zynga or Rovio? Take the Mobile Application Programming course and you ll be on your way to creating your very own app for the Android market. Using Google s very own App Inventor we will learn how to create mobile apps that anyone using an Android can download and play themselves. Will you be the next Farmville or Plant s Vs. Zombie s creator?
