2 Knauf Insulation supports Level(s) Part of Knauf Insulation DNA, contributing to creation of buildings regulations and promoting implementation, EU and national level is (EPBD ) Today, focusing on energy only not enough anymore, we need to go BEYOND! Holistic approach encompassing all «key sustainability topics» is the direction Knauf Insulation wants to promote Sustainability, a direction already indicated since long by dynamic green buildings rating schemes, starting with non-residential, but with Level(s) we are looking at: Harmonization => common assessment methods & reporting system Adaptation to local situations => flexible and accessible tool for all, priorities and targets set locally Mainstreaming => applied to all buildings through national initiatives (regulations ) The development of Level(s) by the EU Commission with the support of all stakeholders is a unique opportunity Knauf Insulation supports & promotes. 2

3 The pilot project, description New construction (office) in Slovenia Experience - Training Center, open to public Promotion of local systems & solutions (partners) First DGNB certified building in Slovenia (Gold) BIM project Construction started in Oct 2017, completed in Nov

4 The pilot test project, initial objectives Testing Level(s) indicators, assessment method, process, cost Level(s) reporting tool in parallel to DGNB Core 14. Evolution with DGNB 2018 Support the Slovenia Ministry development of longer term building regulations, in collaboration with Slovenia GBC Organize a public workshop to boost the green buildings dynamic in Slovenia. Assessment of BIM impact when reporting on LCA & LCC, and Level(s) in general. 4

5 What happened in 2018 Level(s) initiative arrived at the perfect time to support the Slovenian Government in developing a national sustainability system for buildings, starting with office buildings. Saša Galonja (28/11/17) Head of Construction Division Spatial planning, Construction and Housing Directorate Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning Level(s) assessment started Construction work and DGNB assessment, with finalization of certification in December Level(s) public workshop in May, followed by 2 additional GBC workshops Opening ceremony on Nov 21 st 5

7 Level(s) indicators selected Level 1: The common performance assessment Level 2: Comparative performance assessment Level 3: Optimised performance assessment Level 1 because: Project was already in its construction phase Start with the beginning and allow a «quick» jump into Level(s) In parallel DGNB CORE 14 and 2018 version Level 2 or Level 3 could be selected for some criterias a posteriori. 7

8 Learnings from assessment (1) In a country with no green buildings certification & experience, a fantastic / difficult challenge but great learning experience: Bill of Materials, selection of right construction products and systems Availability of supporting evidence of performances (emissions, LCA ) Common language between architect, assessor, contractors, suppliers Post construction checks (emissions ) Based on 108 LCA, or equivalent > 99% of products experience 8

10 Workshop ojectives: possible contribution of Level(s) to mainstreaming sustainability in Slovenia Partners: Slovenia GBC, European Network Green Building Council, Slovenian Ministry and DGNB. EU Commission Participants: 110, contractors, building specialists, products manufacturers, specifiers, policy makers, associations and media

Role of public authorities, and GBC Contribution of Level(s) Opportunity for case studies and communication => demystification Strong basis for Public Procurement Simplified / harmonized concept of green building Basis for national training program on sustainable buildings

14 LEVEL(s) Summer 2018 Two additional workshops organized in Slovenia by GBC, in Sept and Nov. A coalition of the willing's around GBC. It needs to move from talking to doing! 14

15 Next steps for the pilot project & conclusions Finalize assessment at level 1 and evaluate differences with DGNB, or how much Level(s) is more accessible compared to DGNB Analyze the required efforts to move up to level 2 or 3, based on the DGNB certification Communicate results and conclusions; complete the JRC survey Continuous support of the Slovenia Ministry in its initiative to use Level(s) through regulations Envisage the organization of a second workshop around the pilot project Thank-you!
