2 ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Department of petrochemical Engineering came into existence at the faculty of Engineering in 2011 at JCT. The Petrochemical Engineering has 343 students and 13 qualified faculty members. The Department has been provided with 10 labs worth of 80 lakhs and led by Dr. R. Paramasivam.

17 SCOPE FOR PETROCHEMICAL ENGINEERING Petrochemical engineering is a specialized branch of Chemical Engineering which deals with the operations of refining and petrochemical technology. The term petrochemical refers to the organic chemicals which are obtained directly or indirectly from crude petroleum. It is the task of the petrochemical engineers to discover natural sources of oil, extract them from the earth, refine them and make it usable. Petrochemical engineering can be divided into two parts, upstream sector and downstream sector.

18 The upstream sector activities include exploration, production and exploitation of oil and natural gases. The downstream sector consists activities such as the refining, marketing and distributing of petroleum products. Refining process is crucial for an oil product as then only it can be used.

19 RESPONSIBILITIES OF PETROCHEMICAL ENGINEERS Petrochemical engineers turn raw materials into valuable products using petrochemical processes. Petrochemical engineers are the wizards of the chemical world, constantly using their scientific know-how to combine elements and create new synthetic substances that are useful on a daily basis. Petrochemical engineers use petrochemicals to process our foods, create our clothes, fuel our cars, heat our homes, and recycle new materials from refuse. They turn raw materials into valuable products. Petrochemical engineers work in a variety of industries, alongside scientists, mathematicians and administrators. The majority of their work revolves around using creative and analytical thinking to come up with new or more costeffective processes for producing products. Some of the daily tasks include: Designing and managing petrochemical processing plants Supervising technicians and engineers within the plant Designing and operating environmental control systems Determining cost-effective processes for commercial production Working within an office, industrial plant or lab setting
