2 Obj e c t i v e s o f th e Me e t i n g The 47 th AESGP Annual Meeting will take place in the wake of a global financial crisis which has forced many countries to reassess the allocation of public resources and implement a reduction or readjustment of healthcare expenditure. As the priorities in the healthcare sector are turning towards the provision of more effective and efficient services, it becomes clear that self-medication has a significant role to play. Self-medication reduces costs for healthcare systems as patients take care of minor ailments themselves, usually paying for products out of pocket. It also allows health professionals to focus on more severe illnesses. The more judicious use of healthcare resources should in turn result in improved quality of care. However, while the self-medication industry is meeting an increasingly receptive audience on account of the socio-economic benefits it generates, it is also faced with a dramatically changing market environment and a new type of consumer. The conference will open with a discussion on the characteristics of consumers in the digital era and the opportunities and risks of Web 2.0 for the industry. Experts from market leaders in the field of information and communication technology will provide their experience and present case studies. How new strategies are implemented and what is needed to stay competitive will be discussed by leaders of the self-care industry. Market researchers and strategic analysts will discuss the latest developments in the marketplace globally and in Europe and analyse particularly interesting national developments. This will be complemented by a stakeholder discussion on how best to empower consumers in the information age. The meeting will also cover the need for smarter regulation in order to ensure an open and free market for self-care products. Perspectives will be provided for the regulatory framework for non-prescription medicines, food supplements, cosmetics and self-care devices. Moreover, there will be a debate on corporate social responsibility in the healthcare industry. In short, participants will get a comprehensive overview of developments in the selfcare sector. The conference will also provide a forum for the exchange of experiences and ideas. In addition to the business programme, there will be ample opportunity for networking and informal exchanges with representatives from government authorities, health professions, academia and industry.
