buildingsmart is easy to deploy - a case study from Norway Quickly show how buildingsmart and openbim can be used in reality, in a 3 hour doing is believing workshop The team was a Swedish group of engineers and architects with no prior experience with openbim Design and Modeling tasks Initial sketch model made in 30 minutes Initial domain specific models made in 30 minutes Then three Design Review cycles of 15 minutes plenary cross disciplinary problem solving + 30 minutes individual problem solving and model updating What you will see was the result till lunch Material available at it lli
Requirement modeling The team outlined the proposed building on a flip-over. And made a requirement BIM model with initial space configuration in a openbim early stage planning tool.
blocking and stacking of required spaces Then integrated a blocking & stacking requirement model BIM with GIS (Google Earth). 7
Initial Design Based on an openbim export of floor slabs from the requirement model BIM the team then made an initial Design a solution to the problem stated. 8
Cross Disciplinary Coordination The team then used an openbim model checking tool to find and document spatial conflicts between the domain models that needed attention. 9

Solutions have been available for many years - and are improving In 2005 we had a presentation at a buildingsmart Industry Day in Oslo We explained the concepts and demonstrated 15 different BIM tools (from architectural modeling to firemen's emergency training) interoperating /exchanging g information live on stage using Selvaags Munkerud as a case Source: It worked back then and has only become better. 16 Sharing Knowledge Reaping Benefits => buildingsmart Aquarium In the worst global recession ever seen, construction is suffering. The traditional operator working in isolation, producing output with limited regard for the impact this will have on the overall project, does not offer the route to success. Waste and duplication can no longer be absorbed by rising property prices. The way forward is through overall cost reductions and on-time delivery. Fortunately, developments in process and technology, resulting in increased adoption of interoperability and BIM, provide the key to future prosperity. Twenty-first t century construction ti is about working together th to maintain profits for everyone, and in particular to create value for the customer.
What is Aquarium. During Aquarium, problem owners, software vendors and buildingsmart experts gather to; improve EXISTING SOFTWARE or to initiate creation of NEW SOFTWARE solutions, using the open buildingsmart standards. After three to six months or a defined period of time a solution is ready to put into practice. In addition to the technology aspects, Aquarium can also develop the business process required to apply the solution. buildingsmart uses expertise from all over the world to facilitate the Aquarium process and to support implementation. Normally the problem owner would be a traditional AEC company, but software companies may also use an Aquarium to align customer requirements among key customers.
What is Aquarium.. Open is a key word in Aquarium. The process, its documentation and results are open and observers are encouraged and welcome. Aquarium is aimed at companies who want to take advantage of improved collaboration, to quickly identify solutions and who are willing to share solutions with other buildingsmart members. Win win is key Information has a special characteristic in that its value increases with the number of people it is shared with. BuildingSMART Aquarium is a problem solving process, which explores business opportunities through improved digital collaboration.
Why Aquarium is needed. Ten years ago, Matti Hannus, from VTT in Finland, produced a cartoon of key advances in technology within construction disciplines, depicted as Islands of Automation The picture highlights the steady advances in technology, but critically, demonstrates that these have been undertaken in isolation. Hannus correctly identifies that if bridges can be built between the islands, they will allow an efficient route for data transfer. In essence, this describes the primary objective of buildingsmart, that is, establishing a set of international standards to permit data transfer between the technologies used in construction. ti These IFC (Industry Foundation Class) standards are essentially the bridges. 19
Why Aquarium is needed. 20
Why Aquarium is needed.. However, developing theoretical standards has limited value. It is necessary to both develop and prove such standards in a real environment. Aquarium provides such an environment, with the added bonus that the whole process is open and invites contribution,, which further enriches the content. 21
The buildingsmart Aquarium -high value problem solving 1) Seek problem 2) Solve problem 3) Use solution
1) Seek problem 2) Solve problem 3) Use solution The buildingsmart Aquarium -high value problem solving The starting point for Aquarium is to identify a problem that can, at least in part, be solved by addressing the technology and process of collaboration and/or interoperability. Ideally, the problem is related to a wasteful or inefficient process in the construction value chain. Having identified a problem, the buildingsmart member and problem owner, invite buildingsmart to submit an Aquarium proposal. The proposal considers the viability of the project, (in terms of alignment with current standards practice and strategy). It outlines the stages of problem solving, participants required, time scale and costs.
The buildingsmart Aquarium 1) - Seek the Problem (and address the problem locally) 1) Seek problem 2) Solve problem 3) Use solution At the start of the project, the Aquarium team s first task is to clearly define the problem and establish the value of solving it. Working with the technology vendors, a local solution (or solutions) is proposed and tested within the project team.
1) Seek problem 2) Solve problem 3) Use solution The buildingsmart Aquarium 2) - Problem Solving The local solution(s) are then coordinated with buildingsmart International. This allows comparison with existing standards and other Aquarium projects that are providing similar local solutions. From this work, a best practice solution is recommended for development and can comprise any combination of software product, process model or educational/training programme. From this recommendation a product/solution is developed and tested at international and local level. This is development is done on commercial terms outside the Aquarium.
1) Seek problem 2) Solve problem 3) Use solution The buildingsmart Aquarium 3) - Use the solution The Aquarium actually finishes after Problem Solving, but the details of deploying the solution and the value realised, are measured and reported back to buildingsmart to complete their records. This cut off is in place because the responsibility for taking forward the Aquarium solution in day to day operations belongs to the business concerned and is not part of the Aquarium. In the same way solution providers, both thoose involved in the Aquarium and others, have to make a commercial decisions about investing in developing his software solution to support the outcome of the Aquarium on commercial terms and this is also not part of the Aquarium.
The Benefits of Aquarium Aquarium is an open problem solving process that shares answers through collaboration. Solutions are identified more quickly, which benefits all project participants and buildingsmart members. Key benefits include: High ROI Access to global solutions and expertise Better decisions earlier in projects Enhanced coordination between disciplines Significantly reduced change orders and mistakes No hand checking of data using printouts and markers High level digital collaboration Value - every time the final solution is used it should generate value directly to your business.
