6 TRP: Innovation Triangle Initiative ITI is based on the Innovation Triangle concept requiring the collaboration of 3 different entities: an INVENTOR, a DEVELOPER and a CUSTOMER. Three types of activities aimed at the different elements of the triangle: (A) Proof of Concept(for INVENTORS): fast validation of new ideas (B) Demonstration of Feasibilityand Use (for DEVELOPERS): component and/or breadboard development up to validation in the laboratory (C) Technology Adoption(for CUSTOMERS): development up to validation in a relevant environment, Pressure sensor, Oxensis Technology Rome 8/07/2013 Slide 6 ESA UNCLASSIFIED For Official Use Wireless sensors, SSTL

12 Italian Participation to the TRP: Activity Examples Precision Landing GNC Test Facility C, 1500 k, CGS (Prime), Un. D'Annunzio, Un. Padova, Fondazione IRSPS, The main objective of the activity was to develop a precision landing GNC test facility that will emulate real lander dynamics and test safe precision landing navigation, guidance and control technologies. Started 2006, Closed 2012 Large Antennas for P-Band SAR - Critical Breadboarding C, 430 k, TAS(I) (Prime) The objective of this activity is the critical breadboarding/proof-of-concept and evaluation of the components, materials, equipment and assemblies to retire risks for the antenna development as required for BIOMASS Earth Explorer candidate mission. Started 2011, closed Expert In-Flight Test Measurement Techniques for Aerothermodynamics C(2), 1100 k, CIRA (Prime), Alta The objective of this activity is to improve intrusive and develop the concept non-intrusive diagnostic techniques for in flight Aerothermodynamics research. Started 2006, closed EXPERT BIOMASS P-Band SAR Technology Rome 8/07/2013 Slide 12

Italian Participation to the TRP: Activity Examples STARTRACKER, SUNSENSOR on a Chip C, Galileo Avionica (I) + CMOSIS (B) APS Technology, Fabricated using a CMOS process Enabling detector on chip integration, Eliminating CCD analogue electronics Smaller mass and foot print Spacewire Interface Started 2006, Closed 2011 Inflatable Re-entry Technologies C, 950 k, Aerosekur (Prime) + CIRA + TAS IRDT is a concept, that enables re-entry from orbit and landing without the need of a heavy heat shield and parachute system. Started 2003, closed 2006 There has been limited activity in Europe on the subject. However, in the meantime NASA performed 3 demo flights: 2009, 2010, 2012 Technology Rome 8/07/2013 Slide 13
14 A word on the next TRP cycle Preliminary Selection of Activities will be presented to Programme Board (IPC) in September This will be followed by a consultation of member states incl. dedicated bi-lateral meetings for member states requesting such a meeting. Based on the preliminary selection, the first annual workplan (2014) will be submitted to the IPC in November 2013
