2 ROLLSIM Software for modelling simulation of high-spee Simulation is a cost-efficient tool for optimizing manufacturing processes and product properties. Swerea MEFOS has developed an easy-to-use simulation software for wire rolling. Industrial use of the finite element method in simulation of manufacturing processes is still not common and the extent of use varies depending on the type of manufacturing process. This can mainly be attributed to the fact that it has so far required highly skilled engineers with a fundamental understanding of three different fields: numerical methods, materials science and manufacturing processes. An easyto-use simulation tool is therefore of great importance for the industry. Swerea MEFOS has developed the program RollSim, which is a fast, accurate and accessible tool for simulating wire rolling. Material models are a crucial part of simulation of thermo-mechanical processes, owing to an acute dependency on the effects of microstructure evolution. RollSim consists of components for advanced microstructure-based material models, large-deformation generalized plane-strain finite element solvers and optimization routines for multi-objective optimization of the process, product and productivity. Its ease of use and low required knowledge-threshold makes RollSim well suited for a process-design engineer to use in rollpass design, and it can help in accurately predicting the process window for new and existing materials. The software has been developed during with funding from Vinnova and will now be validated at five different steel plants in Sweden. 2 News November 2015

The industry and its representatives are, in many cases, new acquaintances for me, and the reception I have been given has been characterized by positive expectations and great commitment. For those who I have yet to meet, I wish to give a brief introduction. My name is Eva Sundin and I have lived in Luleå since the mid- 1980s. I hold a PhD, a Tekn. Lic. and an MSc, and have worked for many years as a manager in heavy industry. I assumed the position of managing director at Swerea MEFOS as of 4 August My background includes many years of work in energy and environmental engineering, which is especially rele vant and important here, at Swerea MEFOS. I foresee great possibilities for Swerea MEFOS to make contributions, through research and development, that will strengthen our customers sustainability. In times such as these, with tough economic conditions, I see resource efficiency as an incentive for us all. Our extensive network in industry, academia and other research institutes helps us to maintain a high level of global specialist knowledge in areas such as reduction metallurgy, process integration and large-scale pilot projects. We are therefore pleased and proud to present our new professor, Lena Sundqvist Ökvist, Associate Professor of process metallurgy at Luleå University of Technolo gy. This appointment will help to strengthen and develop our knowledge acquisition even more. Verifying technologies and methods in semiindustrial scale using real raw materials has been one of our specialities since we started, more than 50 years ago. The Stepwise project and rock-bolt testing are good examples of our capacity to design tests that are applied under realistic conditions. This makes it difficult to compare the performance of bolt types and is also expensive and time-consuming. Also, the number of underground mines compared to surface mines is foreseen to increase in the near future, for example, in Australia, where the proportion of underground mines is expected to increase from 30% to 70% within the next ten years. Worldwide interest in safety and secure mining to reduce injuries to due accidents, as well as damage to equipment, is an obvious driving force behind investment in reliable, high-performance reinforcement systems. Together with the rock-bolt innovators Northern Mining Products, SSAB Virsbo and the Norwegian bolt manufacturer Galvani Tia, Swerea MEFOS will develop a method for generic rock-bolt performance tests. A watchword in the project is to establish one test method to evaluate the performance of all existing rock bolts and enable comparison of bolts in different categories. The effect is safer and more productive mining with fewer accidents and less damage to expensive equipment. The project is funded by Vinnova. The grouted type is the most common and exists in a variety of configurations but the friction bolt, with its immediate load-bearing capacity and clean installation, promises additional benefits. In 2011 about 70 million reinforcement bolts were sold worldwide, a number that will most certainly increase over the next decade. Today s rock-bolt tests are extremely costly and often take up to a year to complete. News November

Professor of Process Metallurgy Lena Sundqvist Ökvist, Swerea MEFOS, has been appointed Associate Professor of Process Metallurgy at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources

6 Professor of Process Metallurgy Lena Sundqvist Ökvist, Swerea MEFOS, has been appointed Associate Professor of Process Metallurgy at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, Luleå University of Technology (LTU). Lena Sundqvist Ökvist holds a PhD in Process Metallurgy with specialization in injection and slagforming in the blast furnace, and has formerly worked with both research projects and teaching at LTU. She has extensive experience of national and inter national research in reduction metallurgy and recycling of residual products, particularly in the area of materials and energy efficiency in the steel industry. This area accounts for a significant portion of research at LTU and is an important part of the work of CAMM, the Centre of Advanced Mining and Metallurgy. Lena s expertise and commitment to research and teaching-related issues, as well as her very considerable national and international network, will be a major asset for our research field, says Caisa Samuelsson, Professor at the Division of Minerals and Metallurgical Engineering. The position of Associate Professor, to which Lena will devote 20 percent of her time, will involve research as well as teaching and advising doctoral students at the department. Lena assumed the position as of 1 September. Award for best paper Mats Karlberg, Swerea MEFOS, has been awarded the Best paper presentation award for his paper Numerical Modelling of the coil cooling process of HSLA strip products. The presentation was made at the 2nd International Conference on Rolling and Finishing Technology of Steel, in Ranchi, India. 6 News November 2015
