3 09:15-09:20 Welcome Address 09:20-09:40 Opening Session - A path towards a new partnership Ten years after initiating an institutional joint venture between Portugal and MIT, it is clearly evident that the MIT Portugal Program (MPP) has been successful. A new program of research, education, and innovation for was planned and it will be briefly presented, exploring the main drivers, the priorities and the new challenges from all the program stakeholders. António Cunha, MIT Portugal Program - Program Governing Board
4 09:40-11:10 Round Table I Space, Sea, Climate & Data Science: a contribution to Atlantic International Research Center (co-organized by the AIR Centre) Keynote: An Earth Operating Manual Through a cognitive platform that curates the quintillion bytes of daily data from ocean, climate, air, and near-space satellites for breakthrough gains in knowledge and solutions to heal Spaceship Earth in one decade. Incorporating AI, machine learning, and natural language tools to curate open data from NASA, NOAA, ESA, and other relevant databases, and synthesize it for the public, policy makers, consumers, and businesses will be, definitely, a bold challenge for research. Dava Newman, MIT AeroAstro Moderator: José Moutinho, AIR Centre Marcos Martins, UMinho Frederico Ferreira, IST - U Lisboa João Crespo, U Nova Lisboa Eugénio Ferreira, UMinho David Otero, U Porto Ricardo Mendes, TEKEVER Sérgio Barbedo, EDISOFT 11:10-11:30 Coffee break
5 11:30-13:00 Round Table II Smart Industry: from new industrial concepts to the digital transformation (co-organized by DTx: Digital Transformation CoLab) Keynote: Interacting with Personal Fabrication Machines In anticipation of 3D printers reaching millions of users, how to allow future users to interact with the new hardware? This keynote will be focused on a series of interactive software + hardware systems created to answer this question. They are characterized by two main properties. First, they produce physical output quickly, allowing users not only to see their results, but also to touch and test their mechanical properties as users work towards a solution. Second, the systems allow users to interact directly with the workpiece. Stefanie Mueller, MIT CSAIL/HCI Moderator: Ricardo Machado, UMinho/DTx: Digital Transformation CoLab Paulo Cruz, UMinho Jorge Belinha, IP Porto Elsa Henriques, IST - U Lisboa Paulo Flores, UMinho Américo Azevedo, U Porto Francisco Duarte, Bosch Car Multimédia Ângelo Ramalho, EFACEC 13:00-14:30 Lunch
6 14:30-16:00 Round Table III Cities as Sustainable Systems Keynote: Cities and Sustainability: the Atlantic Ocean-City Interface Data and computation bring an understanding of the metabolism of cities within our grasp just as the world's population has become primarily urban. From extraction of resources through manufacture and consumption of products and services, infrastructure that advances resource efficiency and resilience is critical to our urban future. In particular, the interfaces between human settlements and earth systems - for example the sea-land interface at the location of major cities along the multi-continental edge of the Atlantic Ocean - are becoming sites for solutions that address climate change and a wide range of environmental challenges. John Fernandez, MIT Moderator: Richard Neufville, MIT Daniel Aelenei, U Nova Lisboa Carla Rodrigues, U Coimbra Anabela Ribeiro, U Coimbra António Couto, U Porto A. Gomes Martins, U Coimbra Jorge Pinho de Sousa, U Porto Luís Picado dos Santos, IST - U Lisboa Xavier Martin, DSTelecom Pedro Grilo, Lisboa City Council 16:00-16:30 Wrap up and Final Remarks Pedro Arezes, MIT Portugal Program 16:30-17:00 Closing Session Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and High Education Rui Vieira de Castro, Rector of the University of Minho Paulo Ferrão, President of Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)
