23 24 april 2016 Hack for Good Gulbenkian boost solutions for social good
In 2016, Gulbenkian Foundation is launching Hack for Good, a hackathon that mends to create a strong connection between technological and social sectors. For Gulbenkian, technology is an enabler, a creator of innovative and scalable solutions that mitigate problems our society faces. These problems can include school dropout, unemployment, refugee integration, climate change and many other. In this first edition, the theme will be ageing and the participants will be invited to solve several problems connected to this theme. Goals 3 8 Programme Oportunities 9 11 Communication
Hack for Good Hackathons are development marathons where multidisciplinary groups get together to solve a problem or develop products. These events are very action-driven. In the end, the participants are expected to present functional products, even if not ready to go to the market. Hackathons usually last 24 or 48 hours and are, over all, excellent opportunities to promote a specific theme or attract talent to a less explored area. Hack for Good wants to encourage youngsters to create solutions to real problems for social challenges related to population aging. Hack for Good is a hackathon organized by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The goal is to develop broad and sustainable solutions to real social problems connected to population aging, over 2 days of intense programming and prototyping. We want to gather multidisciplinary teams (programmers, designers, engineers, doctors, managers, specialists, etc.) to generate ideas and develop technological solutions focused on social good. The goal is to capture talent to the several fields of the social cause. What makes this event a pioneer one is the intersection between technology and aging. Specialists in technologies and aging will be working together with the participants to find innovative solutions that might be applicable worldwide. 3
Why? World population is ageing at a fast pace. This demographic change is not necessarily bad, but we must be prepared for it as soon as possible. Given the technological evolution and its increasingly natural presence in our lives, there s an opportunity to have technology serving the demographic alterations, to build a better future for everyone. Recently, the Portuguese National Statistic Institute presented a demographic indicators analysis related to ageing in Portugal. According to this study, Portugal presents one of the lowest indexes of renewal of population in active age, and is the number five in the ageing index, when compared to the 28 EU members. The report refers the number of elderly people exceeded the number of young people, for the first time in Portugal, in 2000 and also highlights that the workforce in Portugal is ageing. Besides that, the elderly stereotypes are changing. Seniors are becoming more active, open to new technologies and demanding about their activities, initiatives and services. By thinking about the social field and emerging technologies, we soon realize there are many needs and opportunities here. 4
O Tema As referred previously, Hack for Good will focus on Population Ageing. Nevertheless, as this is such a broad issue, we selected some topics that will help the participants target their solutions. We identified as problems: Communication and Social Relations There are many solutions out there to solve isolation and sedentarism of the elderly. But we believe there is room for more possibilities. Cognitive stimulation The loss of cognitive abilities is a reality among the elderly. How can we create simple, intuitive and fun solutions to solve this problem? Knowledge transfer Platforms must be created to make communication between generations easier, promote contact between the youth and the elderly and avoid loss of generational knowledge. Health and Wellfare A field with enormous potential, from services to the development of better products for rehabilitation and prevention. Nutrition A balanced healthy nutrition is hard to keep and to control in this population segment. Technological solutions might help. Personal Finances The existing financial services are not developed for seniors. This is a field with many opportunities. Caregivers Development of technologies that make the work done by caregivers easier and more efficient. Mobililty In most cases, public transportation is not an easy solution for the elderly. What alternatives can be developed? 5
Particiants We want to gather 150 programmers, designers, engineers, managers and other professionals, that will be in permanent contact with seniors, healthcare professionals, specialists and caregivers, to find innovative and scalable projects, working in multidisciplinary teams. The participants will have ages between 18 and 35 years old and will come from the north to the south of Portugal. Seniors will also be present, to provide feedback and participate in activities developed to include them. 6
Main goals 1 Creation of a technological entrepreneurship program, focused on projects with long term positive social impact, to solve problems related to population ageing. A great variety of topics will be approached like mobility impairments, health issues, financial management and isolation. Promote innovation by bringing new projects and new perspectives to social causes. We want to get young people involved in the creation of solutions for problems with a social nature. With the support of mentors from social areas, we ll provide the tools and knowledge for not only solving the problems this event focuses on, but also future ones. 2 3 Be a link between young people and the elderly, raising awareness to the problems our society faces. To attain this goal, we included activities that will potentially connect several generations. 7
Program Alongside this program, we have other activities prepared: video games, yoga, tai chi, indoor and outdoor games, workshops, etc. The 2-day program includes several activities. Besides the development of technological solutions which is the most important part of the initiative, over 24 hours straight, work will be combined with networking moments, keynotes and relaxing activities such as yoga, workshops and entertainment. Saturday 10:00 Check-in and Networking 11:00 Welcome and Keynote I 11:45 Challenges presentations and team formation 12:30 Lunch 14:00 Teams start working 20:00 Dinner 21:00 Check-point 01:00 Supper Domingo 07:00 Breakfast 12:30 Lunch 15:00 Pitches 17:00 Keynote II 17:30 Winners 18:00 Closing 8
Partnerships Partnerships are essential to achieve success with this program, which wants to attract talent to several social fields. Becoming a Hack for Good partner is supporting an initiative focused on getting useful solutions for real problems. Reasons to support Hack for Good is an excellent opportunity to promote any company related to technology, innovation, health, mobility or communications. The close contact with young people that represent the future of knowledge in Portugal is possible here. Over the weekend, new concepts and technologies will be developed. Partnering with Hack for Good is an opportunity for having a positive social impact, helping to build new solutions for real problems related to population ageing. Our partners will be included in all the event communication. Besides that, partners will have the opportunity to be physically present in the hackathon. 9
Support possibilities Partners They are the ones that nurture the most work and execution during and after the event. Partners will be asked to intervene during the Hack for Good opening and closing sessions, as inspiration to the participants. They might also be part of the jury for winner selection, be hosts or deliver awards. LABS Organizations that provide scientific support to the event and help the teams during the project development. They can also give their name to a room used for the Hack for Good activities. This naming is also applicable to the event communication: the partnership will be promoted on the website, social networks and printed materials. Hardware DEN The partner technology or database can be includeded to be used during the event, in the main agenda or the parallel activities. It is important for the teams to have technologies available to work and hack during the event. These partners can also provide hardware as prizes to the winners. 10
Communication The event s promotion will not only be done via digital channels such as social networks and website, but also offline, through partnerships with student organizations, institutes and youth foundations, muppies, flyers and outdoors. We ll be also partnering with national media for press coverage. Website Partner logo presence on the Partners section. Stage The company will be referred as a sponsor on stage. Teaser Video The credits will include the companies that support the event. Social networks The partners will be presented on social media posts and on visual content like banners, images and photos. Digital communities The hackers and makers communities will be used as a channel. Forums Partners will be invited to be present as speakers and keynotes during the event. Muppies Partners will be added to the sponsors section in muppies. Merchandising Distribution of merchandising from the partner company and presence of the logo on the event merchandising. Universities and student groups Partners will be referred when communicating with students and universities. Hack for Good label A certificate will be provided to all the partners, which they can use on their own communication. 11
