2 Why WIAMan? WIAMan is the world's first test manikin that is purpose-built for military use in under-body blast (UBB) testing of ground vehicles in LFT&E Strategic Readiness Future Force Benefits include: Soldiers and People Improving soldier survivability and quality of life when subjected to the effects of UBB Improving the protection of ground vehicle systems Evaluating the effects of UBB on mission-critical tasks Quantifying the risk to the Warfighter and identifying tradeoffs during vehicle design 2

4 DOT&E Capability Gap DOT&E Issue Papers and RMD700 were based on creating a DoD capability for UBB injury risk assessment that is equivalent to that used by DOT Current capability based on Hybrid III is inadequate for determining the risk of skeletal injury to vehicle-mounted Soldiers subjected to UBB threats The HIII s lack of injury resolution and biofidelity does not support requirements development, system design, vulnerability evaluation, or the modeling and simulation of UBB events. - Dr. J Michael Gilmore, DOT&E Issue Paper, 2013 Army commitment to DOT&E as presented at inaugural meeting of WIAMan SSG in Feb 2011 Create a new military Anthropomorphic Test Device based system for under-body blast injury assessment for Title 10 LFT&E The HIII s verified lack of injury resolution and biofidelity in the UBB environment makes it inadequate to assess injuries in the UBB loading regime. - Dr. J Michael Gilmore, DOT&E Issue,

5 Requirements Snapshot Test Capability Requirements Document (TCRD) Reflects the Department of Transportation s standard for developing a valid ATD-based injury assessment capability Signed by CG ATEC and CG RDECOM; approved by DOT&E in Jan KPP Description #1: Biofidelity WIAMan shall exhibit human-like motion and load transfer when subjected to UBB loading #2: Data Collection WIAMan shall measure and record data that correlate to UBB-related injuries #3: Injury Assessment The relationship between WIAMan response and probability of injury shall be understood #4: Operational Readiness WIAMan shall be available to support multiple concurrent LFT&E UBB vehicle tests 5

10 Hybrid III vs. WIAMan Gen 1 Hybrid III WIAMan Gen 1 1. Design based on 50 th percentile 1970s male citizen 2. Poor durability compromises reproducibility, repeat testing, and total lifecycle costs 3. Lack of on-board data acquisition; increases set-up times and requires harness 44 miles of cable 4. Legs have no biofidelity or sensors in foot/ankle 5. Rigid design of spine prevents assessment of spinal injury 6. Pelvis does not reproduce human response, offering no relevant instrumentation for injury prediction 1. Design based on today s Warfighter in a seated posture 2. Excellent durability to ensure repeatable injury prediction and reduced lifecycle cost 3. On-board data acquisition to reduce set-up times and eliminate cabling 1 mile of cable 4. Fully instrumented lower extremities for high-fidelity UBBcentric injury prediction 5. Spine curvature allows for improved acceleration response and spinal injury assessment 6. Anatomically accurate pelvis with full instrumentation for pelvic injury prediction 10
