The question was asked "are we working towards the applicability of a universal target or creating targets that are more process specific". It is possible to make smaller targets that are more process specific but there is a question of whether making smaller targets is possible when trying to cross over a large boundary of different processes. Fundamentally we are trying to map CMYK data and color data to each other, depending on the direction and what the model is based on, the linearity of the relationship between CMYK and resulting output determines the uniformity. The original IT8/7.3 target was designed and based on an understanding of the relationship between input tone values and resultant color and how to achieve the optimum spacing of input tone values to best represent of the output color space. USTAG-11-05: This action item remains open. NPES purchased a DNN module that looked promising however the application crashed the website numerous times. SharePoint was considered but requires the purchase of a SQL server which NPES is not willing to fund. Box was suggested as a solution for sharing large files. David Steinhardt stated that IDEAlliance uses an application called Connect and offered to help set this up. 6. Discuss disposition of CGATS.5 - Graphic technology Spectral measurement and colorimetric computation for graphic arts images CGATS.5 is an identical national adoption of ISO so the status of the document will be dependent upon the outcome of ISO which is currently under revision. Any proposed changes to the ISO document should be discussed during the reaffirmation of CGATS.5. Dr. Rich reported that the first draft of ISO with his proposed revisions was discussed during a teleconference on January 31 where most of the proposed changes were approved. He anticipates agreement by the next TC130 meeting in London.
The last time that CGATS.5 was reaffirmed it was felt that it was important to retain the history of the document because it was the precursor of ISO 13655, and the document on which ISO was based. However, it is possible that enough time has passed that it is now appropriate to withdraw CGATS.5 and to nationally adopt the ISO document once it has been revised and published. This would allow for a CGATS/ISO document to exist that is guaranteed to be an identical adoption of the ISO document. One concern is that if we disagree with ISO we would have to draft an entirely new standard. This would require an action to withdraw CGATS.5 in favor of ISO One suggestion was to tighten the requirements for the backing which is the proposal in ISO and leave CGATS.5 for historical purposes, which would provide two different ranges for that backing. After further discussion it was agreed that CGATS.5 should be reaffirmed to adhere to the ANSI maintenance schedule and then to determine how to move forward based on the outcome of the revision of ISO This will be discussed further at the next CGATS/USTAG meeting. 7. Review of open TC130 ballots: Dave McDowell provided a report of the status of the following TC130 ballots. The ISO Ballot close date, recommended USNB vote, and where appropriate suggested USNB comments are shown. These are also summarized in USTAGN5178. a. ISO/CD Graphic technology Laboratory preparation of test prints Part 2: Liquid printing inks ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Negative Although the US agreed to TC 130 Resolution 504 which says ISO/TC 130 resolves to initiate work, at stage (CD), to revise ISO Graphic technology -- Laboratory reparation of test prints -- Part 2: Liquid printing inks", on further review the belief now is that action is inappropriate. The following issues are noted: 1. TC130 Resolution 502 says ISO/TC 130 requests its secretariat to withdraw ISO "Graphic technology -- Colour and transparency of printing ink sets for four colourprinting -- Part 4: Screen printing". 2. The Gravure Associations both (NA and EU) have indicated no need for Although the recent publication of ISO referenced ISO , the emphasis is on hue angle which is directly referenced in ISO ISO is currently in periodic review and the US is recommending that it be withdrawn. Since ISO is only required when making tests for optical assessment and the standards that specify requirements for optical assessment of liquid printing inks (ISO 2846) are no longer used, ISO should be withdrawn rather than being revised.
b. ISO/DIS 5776 Graphic technology Symbols for text proof correction ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: TBD c. ISO/NWIP Graphic Technology Ink, paper and labels Requirements on hot alkali penetration and resistance ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Approve Although this document is technically sound it requires considerable work to both cleanup and clarify wording and remove ambiguity before a CD is issued. d. ISO/CD Graphic technology Determination of tack of paste inks and vehicles by a rotary tack meter ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Negative ISO is in general a clone of ASTM Standard Test Method D4361 but differs from it in several ways, mostly by omissions of details of measurement results. ISO adds nothing to ASTM D4361 and efforts to revise ISO to bring it into better agreement with the current version of ASTM D4361 seem to be a duplication of effort. It is recommended that work on ISO be cancelled, that the document be withdrawn, and that references to ISO be replaced with references to ASTM D4361. NOTE. The US recognizes that we approved resolution 503 of the Berlin Plenary which initiated this work. However, reflection on this activity and further research it is now believed that that was a mistake. e. ISO/DIS Graphic technology -- Displays for colour proofing Characteristics ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Approve w/o comment f. ISO/DIS Graphic technology -- Requirements for colour soft proofing system ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Approve w comments There were several minor technical and editorial comments. g. ISO/DIS Graphic technology -- Extensible metadata platform (XMP) Part 2: Description of XMP schemas using Relax NG ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Approve w/o comment h. ISO/DIS Graphic technology -- Colour data exchange format Part 1: Relationship to CxF3 (CxF/X) ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Approve w/o comment
8. Documents in Systematic Review The following documents are in systematic review. Their status and recommended action are shown. a. ISO Graphic technology Register systems for photographic materials, foils and paper Part 1: Three pin systems ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Reaffirm w/o comment b. ISO Graphic technology Prints and printing inks Assessment of light fastness using filtered xenon arc light ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Reaffirm w/o comment This recommendation was made by Danny Rich, one of the key US Experts on TC130/WG4. His comment was "I recommend that we reconfirm it. There are new suppliers of the Blue Wool standards and they are the only physical side-by-side method available today. There are measurement tables relating Blue Wool values to total color difference but most users say that they are not accurate since you may be comparing the differences of color of a blue versus the differences of some other colors." c. ISO Graphic technology Process control Offset platemaking ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Withdraw Because this International Standard applies specifically to pre-sensitized metal plates exposed by contact exposure, it is no longer applicable to the current procedures used in graphic technology. d. ISO Graphic technology Prepress digital data exchange Part 1: CMYK standard colour image data (CMYK/SCID) ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Reaffirm w/o comment e. ISO Graphic technology Prepress digital data exchange Colour targets for input scanner calibration ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Reaffirm w/o comment f. ISO Graphic technology Process control Certified reference material for opaque ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Withdraw There are no known implementations of this standard in use or available in the US. g. ISO Graphic technology Variable printing data exchange Part 1: Using PPML 2.1 and PDF 1.4 (PPML/VDX-2005)
ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Reaffirm w/o comment h. ISO Graphic technology Exchange format for colour and process control data using XML or ASCII text ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Reaffirm This International Standard provides an important bridge between the various target definition standards using ASCII encoding and XML data exchange. XML usage for color data exchange in graphic technology applications is more completely defined in ISO (CxF/X) which is under development. As such it is important that ISO be reaffirmed and maintained until ISO is fully in place and implemented. i. ISO Graphic technology Colour and transparency of printing ink sets for fourcolour printing Part 5: Flexographic printing ISO Close , Recommended USNB Vote: Withdraw In the US, for nearly 5 years, an attempt has been made to find some way to make this standard relevant to the flexographic printing industry. Three WD revisions submitted by the US were all rejected because there is no substrate upon which ink can be printed that is representative of the color and structure of the substrates commonly used in flexography. Therefore, it is believe that this standard no longer has any relevance to the industry. 9. Review of closed TC130 ballots Ballots on the following documents have been closed since the last CGATS/USTAG meeting. The result of the TC130 ballot is shown along with the USNB vote. a. ISO/FDIS Graphic technology -- Process control for the production of half-tone colour separations, proofs and production prints -- Part 1: Parameters and measurement method Approved: see TC130 N 2417 for Result of Voting. The US Vote was to Approve with comments (all editorial) b. ISO/FDIS Graphic technology -- Process control for the production of half-tone colour separations, proof and production prints -- Part 2: Offset lithographic processes Approved: see TC130 N 2418 for Result of Voting. The US Voted to Abstain c. ISO/FDIS Graphic technology -- Process control for the production of half-tone colour separations, proofs and production prints -- Part 3: Coldset offset lithography on newsprint Approved: see TC130 N 2419 for Result of Voting. The US voted to Approve with comments (Issue raised re implementation of accepted USNB comment re 4.2.1)
d. ISO/DIS Graphic technology -- Printing from digital data across multiple technologies Part 1: Principles Approved: See TC130 N 2491 for Result of Voting (Germany, Japan and Romania voted no). The US Vote was to approve with comments. It was noted that Japan has complained the data sets don't match Japan Color and Fogra has complained there is no match to Fogra data sets. However, no suggestions for fixes were offered. The question was asked are these objections because the data sets are colorimetric and there is no way to use densitometry? The standard includes both colorimetric and densitometric tone values for each of the data sets. It was felt that in order to move forward we need to understand where the objections are coming from. It was noted that there is no direct correlation to ISO and as such it is not consistent with their working practice. Although the tonal values are included in the standard there is no way to prove that the data sets meet the tonal values that are being used in Europe and Asia. The main concern is the issue of confusion for users who may be unsure as to what to use for exchange. It was suggested that we provide data that complies with both ISO and ISO Although it is agreed that characterization is the method that will be used going forward, the transition will be difficult. It was suggested that Part 1 include characterization data that aligns with ISO Then a Part 3 can be developed that includes the US version of characterization data, hoping that in future a Part 4 can be developed that harmonizes both scenarios. e. ISO/DIS Graphic technology -- Printing from digital data across multiple technologies Part 2: Characterized reference printing conditions Approved: See TC130 N 2492 for Result of Voting (Germany, Japan & Romania voted no) The US vote was to Approve with comments. One key US comment was title change to add (CRPC 1 7) to the end of the title. Noted that the US vote was that additional part of the document should have titles that carryon sequentially (CRPC 8-??) The committee reviewed and approved the proposed resolution of comments. German comment DE 19 on adding terms for reference printing condition. It was agreed to accept in principal and reword 3.4. Suggested wording is requested. There was a suggestion to add a comment that DE, JP and UK prepare a Part 3 for ISO that provides data sets that are better aligned with ISO Wording that although there are unifying principles upon which the data sets are based they are dependent on neither tone value nor calibration values. Action USTAG-14-01: McDowell/Orf to circulate the Result of Voting along with the proposed RoC on ISO and -2 to CGATS and USTAG with a request for feedback.
f. ISO/FDIS Graphic Technology -- Communication of graphic paper properties Approved: see TC130 N 2448 for Result of Voting. The US voted to Disapprove. The primary concern was that the wording placed a significant requirement on paper companies to provide data independent of any request from users. g. ISO/DIS Graphic technology -- Prepress data exchange -- Preparation and visualization of RGB images to be used in RGB-based graphics arts workflows Approved: see TC130 N 2496 for Result of Voting (Germany voted no) the US voted to Approve with comments (Mostly editorial, some minor technical). Due to the negative vote the document will go to FDIS ballot. h. ISO/CD Graphic Technology -- Colour data exchange format (CxF/X) -- Part 4: Spot colour characterisation data (CxF/X-4) Approved: see TC130 N 2431 for Result of Voting. The US voted to Approve with comments (Primarily editorial) i. ISO/CD Image technology colour management -- Black point compensation Approved: see TC130 N 2486 for Result of Voting. The US voted to Approve with comments (Editorial) j. ISO/NWI/CD Graphic Technology -- Prepress data exchange -- Tone adjustment curves exchange The NWI was Approved. The CD was not approved: see TC130 N 2485 for Result of Voting. The US voted to Approve NWI and CD (Mostly editorial with some technical comments). There were virtually no technical comments and few editorial comments submitted; suspect confusion in how to respond to a combined NWI and CD ballot. k. ISO/NWI/CD Graphic Technology -- Metadata for graphic arts workflow -- XMP metadata for image and document proofing The NWI was Approved, the CD was not approved: see TC130 N 2483 for Result of Voting. The US voted to Approve the NWI and CD (Only editorial comments). Again, there were virtually no technical comments and few editorial comments suspect confusion in how to respond to a combined NWI and CD ballot) 10. Discussion of other TC130 activities a. ISO , Graphic technology -- Colour and transparency of printing ink sets for four colourprinting -- Part 4: Screen printing Withdrawn by Plenary resolution 502 b. ISO 12637, Graphic technology Vocabulary. Resolution 494 initiated work at stage 0 on the revision of the ISO series with the aim to
combine it into a single document, with a view to providing either a revised standard or a database of TC 130 Terms & Definitions. c. ISO 13655, Graphic technology Spectral measurement and colorimetric computation for graphic arts images. The revision/updating of ISO has been started in JWG8 under Danny Rich. d. ISO , Graphic Technology -- Requirements for printed matter for the commercial and industrial production -- Part 1: Parameters and measurements measures has been changed from an IS (International Standard) to a TS (Technical Specification). e. ISO , Graphic Technology -- Requirements for printed matter for the commercial and industrial production -- Part 2: Commercial Production Printing. WG3 has been authorized to prepare this document as a TS. f. ISO , Graphic Technology -- Requirements for printed matter for the commercial and industrial production -- Part 3: Large Format Signage Printing. WG3 has been authorized to prepare this document as a TS. g. ISO , Graphic technology Variable data exchange - Part 3: Use of PDF/X-4 for content substitution. Work has been started in WG2TF3 to enable the use of the PDF placeholder architecture to accomplish content substitution. h. ISO 18621, Graphic Technology - Measurement of visual attributes of printed materials. The following parts have been identified: Part 11: Method for computing and analysing colour gamut. The proposed document editor is Phil Green. Part 21: M-Score test method for evaluation of macroscopic uniformity. The proposed document editor is Andreas Kraushaar. Part 31: L-Score method for perceived resolution evaluation utilizing a contrast resolution target. The proposed document editors are Thomas Liensberger and Eric Zeise. The Chairman, the secretary and the convenor of WG 11 have been asked to start the dialogue required to create a JWG with IEC TC 100/TA 13 for the development of a standard with the preliminary title Calculating the carbon footprint of electronic media". WG12 has been authorized to start work on an International Standard to define a test method on page pull under the following working title: Page pull test to determine book binding quality. WG2/TF2 has been authorized to start work on an International Standard to associate processing steps and content data information in a PDF file. The proposed title is: Graphic Technology -- Use of PDF to associate processing steps and content data. There was a short discussion on the topic of channel preservation. This is important for the packaging industry and there has been discussion of bringing it into WG2. It was suggested that the discussion of channel preservation be added to the TC130/WG2 agenda.
11. Discussion of Standardization of printing plates Ragy Isaac provided a presentation of dot/plate gain examples as shown in USTAGN5180. His research indicates that there is a systematic error across the plate with flatbed rotary spot scanners. Discussion of this issue suggested indicated that these are not in widespread use and more understanding is needed before CGATS or the USTAG can propose any action. 11. Activity Status Reports a. TC130/WG13 Bob Chung provided a report on the activity of TC130/WG13 as shown in USTAGN5181. b. FTA Steve Smiley stated the FTA has put together a standards working group that is voting on all standards under development. The FTA has reached out to the industry and now has experts reviewing documents. The FTA Forum is planned in March. A new FTA committee will be looking at direct printing on corrugated stock using the G7 approach. c. ICC William Li reported that there are 3 activities of interest to CGATS. 1. A new initiative on medical imaging that is looking at requirements for color for medical imaging displays. 2. Work on ICC Labs will be designated v5. The goal is to make a developer kit and a draft specification available to the public. DevCon 2014 will be held November 3. Information is published on the ICC website The focus of this DevCon will be learning how to use ICC Labs and which parts are relevant to your workflow. 3. The ICC is discussing digital print reference space which is out for review and will be a continuing topic of discussion. The profile is published on the ICC website and additional feedback is welcome. 12. Other CGATS/USTAG Business a. Discussion of new TAG balloting procedures New balloting procedures include recruiting an expert to provide comments before distribution to the TAG for official ballot. The process of getting experts to review documents is not working as well as planned. It should be understood that experts providing proposed comments are not representing their companies on these comments but should be representative of the US. The US comment has to include technical and well as editorial issues.
DAY 2 REQUIRE INPUT FROM ALL GROUPS 13. Open 2 nd session (S. Smiley) The meeting was convened at 9:00 a.m. by Steve Smiley, Print Properties Committee convener with the following in attendance: Javier Robles Lee Ornati Jeffrey Wang Jeremy Tesch Ron Ellis Tim Quinn Matt Fehn Kevin Burke Roy Bohnen Andrew Yan Hiro Nagai Don Hutcheson Paula Gurnee David Steinhardt Darren Cumming Noriaki Matsubara Russell Doucette Jeffrey Collins Larry Warter Peter Pretzer Ragy Isaac Bob Chung Dave McDowell Ray Cheydleur Steve Smiley Debbie Orf Bruce Bayne Marc Levine Via webinar: Ellen Carter Mike Rodriguez Danny Rich Tim Donahue Bob Hallam Joe Fazzi INX Mitsubishi RIT Fine Eye Color Ron Ellis Nazdar TMG Eizo Epson Wing King Tong Co. 13 David Steinhardt introduced himself and provided an update of the IDEAlliance policies and programs. He stated that Joe Fazzi is no longer with IDEAlliance and that, at this time, his position would not be filled. Mr. Steinhardt will be taking the lead with PPC and the SWOP/GRACoL Working Groups and Steve Bonoff will take the lead with PAC and other initiatives. He complimented Mr. Fazzi on his years of service to IDEAlliance. 14. Developing IDEAlliance Peer Exchanges David Steinhardt led the discussion. He pointed out that there is still much confusion in the creative end of the business as to color theory and practices. PPC is the technical working group while there is the need for education and training on best practices. IDEAlliance plans to organize Peer Exchanges to translate the technical into practices and provide feedback back to PPC. 15. Review and approve Minutes and Action Items of the August 20-21, 2013 PPC meeting The minutes were approved as written. Mr. Smiley reviewed action item status. Important points included: Mr. Steinhardt reported the Verification Target card with Munsell is on hold. Following a careful review IDEAlliance determined this project required more research and development on a new path forward later in the year. The committee discussed different size and/or schemes for characterization targets and how to test their relative effectiveness. 16. Discuss status of TR015: Graphic technology Methodology for Establishing Printing Aims Based on a Shared Near-neutral Gray-scale a. Proposed Annex to provide alternate definition of the neutral scale ("native black") Don Hutcheson led the discussion. There is a new version of the pass/fail document. They have moved from the four compliance levels for G7 to an additional level. The 300 percent patch color cannot be met by dry toner systems, but this has little effect on their ability to reproduce the rest of the color space because the black covers the errors. He introduced G7 native black which would be carried in an annex of TR 015 and would, through weighting, migrate the gray balance specs for patches from the 50% toward a non-neutral 300% target in the shadows. Mr. McDowell pointed out that this is representative of any press system where one of the process colors is being pushed. There will be a note that a 300% neutral is desired but not essential. The legacy G7 gray scales will be removed. Mr. Collins raised the concern that a variable 300% goal will cause problems. Mr. Warter suggested that TR 015 dictate that the manufacturers specify a specific goal for each type of machine. The committee discussed implementation. The system will be tested in the G7 Master program for a month, and then be reviewed by the PPC for incorporation into the standard. It was agreed that the process should be implemented by the vendors because it is too complicated for users.
It was agreed not to change TR015 with Native Black, but to add to Pass Fail Document similar to annex for Screen or Flexography. Action CGATS-14-01: Ellis, Hutcheson to provide guidance in Pass/Fail document on when and how to use G7 native black and specify that manufacturers set the goals for each machine b. Conflict between Clause 5.3 vs Annex C Mr. McDowell questioned the use of two substrate correction methods for the neutral scale in TR 015. The annex specifies SCCA and the document uses a simple linear approximation method. Mr. Hutcheson explained that the simple version is being used by many printers as a production short cut and cannot be eliminated. Dr. Rodriguez pointed out that the present data sets are based on the simple version. McDowell's argument was that the neutral scale of data sets adjusted to a new substrate using SCCA will not match the data predicted by the linear approximation. After much discussion, the committee agreed to leave clause 5.3 and Annex C as is but to soften the comment about Annex C being more rigorous. 17. Discuss status of TR016 Graphic technology Printing Tolerance and Conformity Assessment a. Presentation on The Effect of Substrate Correction on Printing Conformity (CGATS/SC3N1334R) Mr. Chung provided a presentation on a conformity test for the RIT samples with and without substrate correction. When he adjusted the goals to reflect the paper used the percentage of compliance increased. He concluded that the upper limit for substrate correction was as high as 5 delta E. Mr. Hutcheson raised the question of should we be revising the goals away from standard in a way that makes the results certifiable but visually different. Brand owners don t want the wrong color to be the target color for their brand and this process can lead to that result. This can be adjusted through color management but is that the proper path forward? Mr. Steinhardt proposed that we need to better educate the creative user as to the advantages and disadvantages of SCCA through a series of seminars under IDEAlliance. Mr. Chung reviewed TR016 proposed changes. This is based on his studies and the tolerancing proposal from Mr. Warter. He proposed the following: Four level tolerancing. Unified tolerances across all ten patches. Increase the maximum permissive tolerances to 6 delta E for deviation and production variation. Moving from worst case for pass/fail to pooled averages. Balance between control strip and data set averages. Scoring to be moved to an annex to meet certification issues. He believes this is a more reasonable implementation, but the vast majority of the tested samples have the same pass fail results across both options.
a. Discussion of tolerancing proposal for a revision of TR016 (L. Warter) Mr. Warter reviewed his document (SC3 N1322) which is an attempt to link tolerance ranges that were originally proposed by former IDEAlliance staff Joe Fazzi and which are generally supported by experts. He showed how they can be developed out of practical printing assumptions. b. Resolution of comments on TR016 (CGATS/SC3N1336, N1337) Bob Chung reviewed the proposed resolution of comments on the 30-day review of TR016. The document as revised will be balloted to CGATS/SC Certification Programs Steinhardt distributed a booklet, An Independent Technical Evaluation of Wide and Grand Format Inkjet Systems. a. Digital Press (Ink Jet) Certification Update Discuss reference of GRACoL2013, CRPC7 and G7 Extreme (beta RPC8) Mr. Steinhardt distributed and reviewed the IDEAlliance report. Mr. Bohnen, as a participant, stated that the tests were fair and well executed. This had originally begun as a uniform color space test but was adapted to allow each vendor to pick their own stock and set up method. The next round should involve categorizing the systems to conform to specific data sets. Mr. Steinhardt distributed copies of the Round-Up Report and stated IDEAlliance would schedule a WebEx to review the report and key findings. Mr. Li stated that CRPC8 does not exist in ISO or CGATS 21 and until the name becomes official it should be referred to PRMG based RPC since CRPC8 will be used in the next version of ISO ACTION ITEM: Li, Sharma to compare the Wide/Grand Format Inkjet roundup data to the PRMG based RPC profiles. b. Hard Copy Proofing Certification Updating per changes to ISO Mr. Smiley stated that the goal was to develop a task force to update the program to: introduce spot color, decide where RPC s and substrate correction fit in, and move to M1 measurements and CIEDE2000. Mr. Steinhardt suggested a time frame of 2 to 3 months. Mr. Wang will lead the group which includes: Tesch, Hutcheson, Ornati, Bohnen, Li, Smiley
ACTION ITEM: Wang (leader), Tesch, Hutcheson, Ornati, Bohnen, Li, Smiley Hard copy proofing task force to report on program during next PPC telecon. The committee discussed whether there is still a need for certified proofing systems. Mr. Wang discussed potential tests. What is the proper relationship of measurement, OBA s and the goals for paper? This led to the question of a market for paper certification. A second group will address paper certification including demand and process. Mr. Ellis will Chair the group. Wang, Bohnen, FhenFehn, Tesch, Bayne, Cheydleur, Steinhardt, Levine. ACTION ITEM: Ellis (leader), Wang, Bohnen, FhenFehn, Tesch, Bayne, Cheydleur Steinhardt, Levine Paper certification task force to report on program during next PPC WebEx in March/April. c. Monitor Proofing Certification There has been one certification in the last year. The current process is not valid and needs to be updated to meet the requirements in ISO and ISO Mr. Smiley questioned the status of soft proofing in the market place. Mr. Hutcheson pointed out that internal soft proofing is very widespread. It is just customer based proofing that does not have much industry support. Much training is needed in all parts of the industry. There is very little understanding of the value proposition of monitors. Steinhardt suggested a roundup to help develop the certification procedures. ACTION ITEM: A task force to study this needs will include: Rodriguez (leader), Wang, Hutcheson, Burk, Cheydleur, Li, Nagi. Monitor proofing task force to report on program during PPC WebEx in March/April. d. Workflow System Certification Mr. Smiley introduced the subject and summarized the work at ISO. Mr. Steinhardt suggested that we put this on hold till the other programs are developed and launched. We can key up for the next face-to-face meeting. 19. Expanded Gamut Project Mr. Hutcheson reviewed the expanded gamut G7 initiative. GRACoL Plus is a method of expanding to a known larger gamut using higher ink densities Y ~1.30, M ~1.75, C ~1.80, K ~1.90 and FM screening. This is not the same as G7 extreme which is an open ended concept. The committee discussed the potential advantages and problems with the concept. ACTION ITEM: Organize expanded gamut task force Hutcheson (leader), Ellis, Gurnee, Isaacs, Smiley. 20. Discussion of CGATS/ANSI IT8.7/5 a. Open CGATS Action Item 13:13 At last meeting there were recommendations for 2 small targets. We are trying to evaluate different color space targets for their effectiveness. Mr. McDowell will develop a protocol to measure
at various schools. It was suggested that we ask vendors who manufacture profile building software like X-Rite and Kodak for feedback. A task force was created to work on this that includes Hutcheson (leader), McDowell, Li, Isaacs, Cheydleur, (ICC JWG Ross (Heidelberg), Long SGS). Mr. McDowell suggested that the vendors of profile building software should be included on the task force. ACTION ITEM: IT8 improvement task force Hutcheson (leader), McDowell, Li, Isaacs, Cheydleur, (ICC JWG Ross (Heidelberg), Long SGS. Mr. Li pointed out that the effectiveness of the profiling algorithm was at least as important as the target coverage. He explained the problems with large targets replication, markets with limit press sheet area, noise etc. If data can be provided by the end of February Mr. Li will add to discussion of ICC at next meeting in Tokyo. 21. Spot Color TVI update New PPC Sub-Committee in Connect formed to review this issue. PPC Spot Color - Future ISO work Mr. Smiley reviewed the status from the committee. There are 5-6 different formulas that are optional solutions for predicting tone values across the spectrum of colors. He will print ramps of 24 different colors on 4-5 different stocks and these will be used to test the various formulas. The committee agreed that a colorimetric approach would be best. Committee members are invited to participate in this group, if interested contact Steve Smiley or John Seymour. 22. IT8.7/4G7 (TC2011) randomized test target Need to test and seek agreement from X-rite, RIT and CalPoly concerning the readability of the TC2011 target by the X-rite I1i02. To move to the new IT8.7/4G7 target (TC2011) several action items were identified: a. Layout and associated reference files need to be prepared that work in i1profiler (Smiley and Cheydleur to coordinate) b. RIT and CalPoly test to verify proper use with their systems (Steinhardt to coordinate) If necessary, after testing this target needs to replace the current IT8.7/4 on press forms used for G7 qualification and other associated documentation. 23. GRACoL Update a. M0, M1 Proof and Visual comparison review Mr. Ellis gave the review. M1 measurement is new in GRACoL 2013 and the question is if the market will accept this. They measured three press sheets with two different measurement instruments. Different labs made proofs from the data using M1. Dr. Rodriguez reported that the
differences between the two measurement units was.8 average delta E and max of 2.8 delta E. Proofs were made with stocks that varied over the full range of OBA s and colors. The committee looked at the samples under the proper lighting. There were no clear conclusions that could be drawn. We arranged to send the samples to expert customers for review. There will be changes to the G7 Masters program to include other levels of certification. b. Computational Spreadsheets Mr. Ellis talked about spreadsheets. The GRACoL spreadsheet can be used to produce most of the data transforms and includes the 7 U.S. data sets. Others have to be added manually by the user. Mr. Levine and Mr. Bayne reported on the updated GRACoL spreadsheets they are developing. This includes both M1 and M0 and SCCA is also an option. They are maintaining some legacy programs. They have included common working names for the CRPC s. It will not accept Color Port or Measure Tool info. They also reported on the substrate correction spread sheet which will have M1 and M0 measurement conditions. ACTION ITEM: Ellis, Bayne, Eddington, Hutcheson, to check the new GRACoL spread sheets to verify that they do the math correctly ACTION ITEM: Ellis, Steinhardt to make sure that there is a pointer on IDEAlliance web site to identify spreadsheets DAY 3 IDEALLIANCE PPC INITIATIVES & PLANNING 24. Discussion of new TAG chair and WG2 convener Dave McDowell stated that he will be withdrawing from standards work in October NPES serves as the Administrator of USTAG and is responsible for appointing the chair of the USTAG which is then balloted to the members of the TAG for confirmation. NPES has recommended that Ray Cheydleur be appointed as the chair of the USTAG. An announcement will be made at the TC130 Meeting in London that Mr. Cheydleur will act as Head of the US Delegation going forward. In the meantime the TAG will be balloted to confirm this appointment. Dave's 2 nd major role is as convenor of WG2 of TC130. Procedures for convenor of TC130 WGs are somewhat different than is found in other ISO TCs. When TC130 was created it was agreed that the chairs of WGs would be the responsibility of various National Bodies. The current implementation of that means that the responsible national body recommends an individual to the WG as the new WG convenor, the WG approves the national body recommendation and prepares a resolution for the TC 130 Plenary to officially appoint the individual selected. The US is responsible for WG2 and the proposed USTAG recommendation for TC130/WG2 chair is Steve Smiley, there will be a ballot within the USTAG to confirm this decision. Additionally, we will recommend that William Li take over as chair of JWG7 which is a joint activity with the International Color Consortium, where Mr. Li serves as co-chair.
It was agreed that Ray Cheydleur should be confirmed as USTAG chair. It was agreed that Steve Smiley be balloted as chair of TC130/WG2. Action: Orf to create ballot for Ray Cheydleur to act as USTAG Chair. Action: Orf to create ballot for Steve Smiley to act as TC130/WG2 convenor. The committee discussed the market needs for education and how IDEAlliance and its Working Groups, PPC and SWOP/GRACoL could meet the demand with financially justifiable programs. 25. Guide to Print Production v13: Update needs to include: a. Best practices for process color and spot color...designing, proofing and printing Incorporate ISO15339 and CGATS 21 b. Best practices for communicating color intent c. Best practices for DeltaE communication, data capture and reporting d. How to use tolerancing: TR016 e. Illumination and geometry of instruments, best practices for color measurement on various substrates f. Instrument best practices and expectations guidelines g. New Center Spread Reference Chart to include 7 new RPC s ACTION ITEM: A task force was established including: Smiley, Gurnee, Ellis, Steinhardt. 26. Brainstorming & Prioritizing re New IDEAlliance Partnership w/ RIT Mr. Steinhardt provided an overview of the strategic partnership of IDEAlliance and RIT and that over the past several months we are focusing on new initiatives. Mr. Wang reviewed the options for new programs with 10 optional programs and the committee voted the items in bold are considered to be of most interest: a. Color consistency monitoring program (Measurement) 17 Quality monitoring Program (digital image quality) b. Printing system certification (15311) 1 c. Digital printing company certification 0 d. Mobile system certification (tablets) 6 e. How to & software tool (carbon footprint) 7 f. Certification (carbon footprint) 0 g. Green Printing performance (score) 8 h. Printing system certification (high speed ink jet) 1 i. EP paper certification (digital) 8 j. Ink certification 11
27. IDEAlliance Updates Mr. Steinhardt reviewed the programs. IDEAlliance now has 1400 members now more internationally than domestic US. The committee discussed marketing and technical initiatives that would benefit customers and in turn promote the G7 brand. 28. Review/Discuss structure of this meeting It was agreed that this meeting structure worked well. It was proposed that the next meeting be planned at a location that is easy to fly into which could allow the meeting to start on the same day. It was agreed to schedule a WebEx every 45 days. 29. Next meeting dates Possible dates would be the end of August, early September. Location TBD. 30. Adjourn The committee thanked Russell Doucette, Konica Minolta, and John Boyd, Pacific Office Automation for their help in organization and providing meeting facilities for these meetings. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.
