He thanked the sponsors (DIN, bvdm, Adobe, SOFHA, UPM, VDMA) for hosting the meetings and providing the facilities. Mr. Warter was thanked for taking the minutes. 2 Roll call of experts and observers (ISO/TC130/WG3 N 1013) A roll call of experts was held. While this is to extensive for our purposes, the committee agreed that a separated discussion on the related aspects for printing was needed. 8.1 ISO 12646: Amd 1: , Graphic technology Displays for colour proofing Characteristics and viewing conditions (N1027 N1681) Mr. Luetkens reviewed the resolution of comments. Mr. Kraushaar reviewed the Fogra studies on display evaluations concentrating on viewing cone dependency. PVA technologies are well suited for all uses except for viewing cone variations. After much discussion the group decided to put both classes of displays ( class A and class B ) in ISO as being in conformance for softproofing applications to be defined in ISO The separation only serves as information for the users. In addition it was discussed to use a luminance range instead the recommendations for 80 cd/m 2 and 160 cd/m 2 respectively. It was agreed to use 160 cd/m 2 only. Action Item 11/01: Luetkens to add a note to regarding a single goal for luminance as opposed to a range. Action Item 11/02: Luetkens to circulate the proposed definitions of luminance in to the various manufacturers to make sure that they agree with the proposals. Mr. Haibarra gave a presentation (based on input from EIZO) of the relative size of various monitors (N 1079), and the fact that there is a disparity between and in terms of monitor size and resolution. The mentioned requirements will be incorporated into Mr. Luetkens will consolidate the various resolved resolution of comments for a four-week review and, after an agreement, he will forward an updated document to ISO/TC 130 secretariat with request to start the ballot for CD. 8.2 ISO/CD 14861, Graphic technology Colour Proofing using electronic displays (N1067 and N1068) Mr. Luetkens lead the discussion of the task group review. Mr Kraushaar raised some concerns that the proposed resolution of comments are not appropriate for one of the three intended use cases. While there is enough substantiation for the objective evaluation of the softproofing quality for instances where there is a physical references (uses cases 2 Repro and 3 Machine console ) there is a lack of means to evaluate the displayed image alone (use case 1). This is due to many factors such as the variability of measurement

6 Page 5 of ISO/TC130/WG3 N 1098 devices and the complex interaction of the colorimeter spectral sensitivities and the peaks of the used LED and CCFL-displays. The committee discussed the relative value of visual comparison to measurements in terms of qualifying displays and agreed that the use case 1 is extremely important and therefore the standard should make provisions for the pertinent requirements. But Mr. Kraushaar emphasized that the proposed tolerances have not been properly evaluated, and it must be clearly expressed that there is currently no defined (and agreed upon) methodology. This concern should also be captured in the introduction. Action item 11/03: Revie, Mortara, McDowell, Kraushaar, Luetkens, Urabe, Smiley and Warter to form an ad hoc group to better define the use case in where there is no reference hard copy proof. This should be done in harmonization with TC130 WG2 RGB workflow standard ISO Mr. Luetkens will finalize and update the proposed resolution of comments in order to reflect the discussion results. The committee will then ballot this document for a second CD ballot by end of May (2-month CD-ballot). 8.3 ISO /2/3, Graphic technology Process control for the manufacture of half-tone colour separation, proofs and production prints Part 1: Parameters and measurement methods: (N 1058, N 1057, N 1021, N 1023) Mr. Kraushaar led the discussion on part 1. The NWIP ballot has been approved with one no vote from the US. The concern was that in light of the ongoing discussion of the remaining parts only terminology parts would be left and that doesn t justify a separate part. Mr. Kraushaar went though the proposed resolution of comments where almost all comments have been accepted or accepted in principle (N 1057, N 1058). Based on the majority of yes-votes (and the unanimous TC130 resolution to revise ISO ) he recommended to continue with the CD ballot. Mr. Kraushaar emphasized the importance of ISO , which extends the requirements beyond terminology to include basic principles and conceptual descriptions of primary and secondary parameters that govern a printing condition. However the US concern was reflected by the following action item. Action item 11/04: Kraushaar, McDowell, Warter, Chung, Bestmann and Beltrami to form a task group to explore a revised to better fit with other parts of and other related standards or to make recommendations for withdrawal. Part 2: Offset lithographic processes: (N1063, N1060, N1059, N 1025, N 1026) Mr. Kraushaar led the discussion of At the beginning some presentations were given. Mr. Beltrami gave a presentation on recent findings related to TVI curves (N 1078) that resulted from calibrated (to a specific printing condition or a default/legacy compensation curve) presses. He argued that a change is not needed (with FOGRA39 being the best compromise) and would cause confusion during introduction. Mr. Carl gave a presentation about the classification of paper into the various grade groups (N 1081). He gave the Paperdam recommendation for the borderlines between the various groups to be incorporated into the revision of Papers are now defined by a surface index (defined by a combination of the Parker-Print-Surf Index and the gloss) and the CIE whiteness D65. Mr. Mortara asked if the paper companies would sell paper by such

7 Page 6 of ISO/TC130/WG3 N 1098 categories. Mr. Lanat agreed. The committee discussed the relationship of the boxes (being the rectangles in the surface-index versus CIE whiteness index diagram) to the resulting visual variations within the pertinent groups or categories. Dr. Bestmann gave a presentation about the revision of ISO to meet present day papers, proofs, CTP curves, inks and grey balance needs (N 1084). Dr. Chung gave a presentation on harmonizing grey reproduction (N 1083). Aims can be established but tolerances get in the way of harmonizing. Grey reproduction is about balancing triplets for differences in opacity, paper and surface. He compared the proposed method in ISO , ISO/CD and a grey ramp method and made suggestions for a grey ramp method to bring a system to optimum within the limitations of the components (paper and ink). This would also serve as a proposal to harmonize all printing tolerances using grey balanced triplets. After the presentations Dr. Bestmann led the discussion. First the need for informative definition of screen ruling was discussed and many questioned arose about resulting screen ruling effects such as the hue shifts in the midtones between course (typical for AM screens up to 80/cm) and fine screens (typically AM screens higher than 80/cm and non periodic screens). It was pointed out that this is a should requirement. There was also a request to express the units in line per inch, which is universally accepted. Action item 11/05: Bestmann to prepare a demonstration that shows that printing colours vary with screen ruling in a way that cannot be easily compensated (to identify the range of adjustments that can be tolerated). There was an extensive discussion of the usage of CIEDE2000. Presentations from Mr. Smiley (N 1091, N 1092), Mr. Chung (N 1090) and Mr. Ito (N 1082) gave insight from their recent findings. Mr. Kraushaar explained the differences between changing only the numbers and keeping the physical meaning (the underlying process variation or deviation) on the one side and the usage of a more perceptual uniform colour difference metric on the other side. While for new projects such as the softproofing standard ISO CIEDE2000 will be used consequently he raised concerns as to the potential for confusion caused by a replacement being done without practical substantiation. However the majority of the committee felt wanted to replace the CIELAB (1976) colour difference with CIEDE2000 tolerances values. The concrete numbers should be based on the findings that CIEDE2000 values are in average 70% of the CIELAB colour difference. Though the CIELAB tolerances of 5 will be changed to CIEDE2000 tolerance of 3.5. The following CD ballot should be used to see how this proposal will be accepted and what corrective actions are needed. Action item 11/06: Kraushaar to develop an assessment of the impact of changing to CIEDE2000 for the relevant standards immediately (both pro and con). It was then discussed to line up the gamuts defined in ISO/CD with the colorant descriptions proposed in ISO/WD While some experts stresses that ISO/CD exactly reflect process standards definitions, on others though that this might not be the case and could be potentially corrected by the XYZ-scaling method defined in ISO (to correct for black and white backing). In order to resolve the dissent the following action item have been drafted. Action item 11/07: Bestmann, Lanat, Smiley, Rodriguez and Green to align the printing aims with the characterization data sets in and by June 1 st 2011.

8 Page 7 of ISO/TC130/WG3 N 1098 Action item 11/08: Bestmann, Khoury, Chung, Revie and Rich to revise the grey ramp equation and propose an agreed upon method for ISO After that the role of the on-press proof was discussed. While Dr. Bestmann explained that they are still used and that they serve as the reference for reprints, other experts mentioned that they are not needed anymore. After much discussion it was agreed to collect more information from the industry as to the proper workflow. Until then the onpress proof should stay in the document for the CD ballot. Action item 11/09: Bestmann to provide substantiation for an annex that documents the classical workflow and the role of on press proof as a reference for the printing industry that needs to be replaced. Another discussion topic was the usage of the ISO measurement mode. While the existing standards (and measurement data used for characterization data sets such as FOGRA39) are based on the defacto standard, often called no Filter, Tthere ar many requests to use new measurement mode M1 to replace the M0 mode. Mr. Kraushaar pointed out that using M1 would be similar to using D50 as the measurement source. However in light of the usage of papers with a high amount of optical brightener agents (OBA) recent analysis of now available measurement devices able to measure according to ISO 13655:M1 give rise for caution. In other words the application and the further use of M1-CIELAB values e.g. for conformance assessment software or ICC profile creation programs will result in problems. He concluded to further use the legacy M0 mode and use M1 for information until further substantiation will justify a replacement. This was generally agreed within the committee. Further discussion was about the use of black versus white backing. It was discussed to use white backing only and provide a mechanism to predict the black backing values needed for process control by means of the opacity of the used substrate. However typical black backing values should be present, at least in an informative fashion. In order to solve this matter the following action item has been created. Action item 11/10: Bestmann, Khoury, Lanat, Seitz, Chung and Widmer to propose a mechanism to achieve black backing values using white backing values (this includes characterization modification -> colour aims). In light of further topics that were discussed the following action items have been drafted. Action item 11/11: Carnelli, Smiley, Mortara and Kassorla to collect data for the handling of printing on non paper like substrates and provide input to the committee for inclusion in Action item 11/12: Beltrami, Widmer, Kraushaar and Chung to investigate the definitions of deviation and variation and the use of statistical colour analysis and make a proposal to incorporate their findings into Part 3: Coldset offset lithography on newsprint: (N 1062, N 1061, N 1029, N 1030) Mr. Thees gave a presentation on reasons to change part 3 and his proposed changes (N 1085). Mr. Seymour gave a presentation on newspaper s apparent rejection of the existing color bar requirements in part 3 (N 1077). He called for inclusion of an image based process control method in the revised part 3. The committee discussed whether image

9 Page 8 of ISO/TC130/WG3 N 1098 data gives sufficient information for recovering process control. A potential inclusion of the image based measurement should be addressed by the following action item. Action item 11/13: Seymour, Thees, Smiley, Rich, Kassorla, Haibara, Carnelli to make recommendations for including image based process control targets in Mr. Thees then reviewed the proposed resolution of comments. There was general agreement. Based on the DE-comments for ISO to not cover newsprinting, it was discussed to change ISO in a way to cover flexography printing on newsprint. The potential implications such as the title and scope change are subject for the following action item. Action item 11/14: Thees, Craig Seymour and Carnelli to investigate including flexographic printing on newsprint in and include recommendations. Subsequent to the recommendation the document will be balloted as a CD. 8.4 ISO : , Graphic technology -- Process control for the production of half-tone colour separations, proofs and production prints -- Part 4: Publication gravure printing (N 1073) Mr. Meinecke led the discussion. He discussed a revision of the standard based on revised gamuts and new substrates. The committee discussed the relationship and stated benefits of the new proposed gamut type 2 to the classical gamut type 1. Mr. Seitz explained to the committee the international usage of the different colorant descriptions (being the solid coloration and therefore a substantial basis for characterization data sets) within each gamut type. It was decided to use the current document including the existing colorant description for the NWIP/CD-ballot. Experts are asked to solicit feedback from their market and use the CD-ballot for potential comments. Action item 11/15: Meinecke, Chung to finalize the revision document and provide it to the committee for an discussion before it is circulated for ballot as a NWIP/CD. 8.5 ISO , Graphic technology -- Process control for the production of halftone colour separations, proofs and production prints -- Part 5: Screen Printing (N1076) Mr. Warter led the discussion. He stated that the published standard needs to be revised. There is support in the U.S. from SGIA, one of the major screen printing organizations, to revise the standard. Since there were indications that, at least, the minimum 5 countries would participate in a revision, the committee agreed that the needed NWIP proposal should be initiated. 8.6 ISO/CD , Flexographic printing (N 1064, N 1034, N 1028) Mr. Smiley led the discussion. He reviewed the proposed resolution of the CD ballot comments. Critical comments have been resolved. The committee discussed the relationship of light-fast inks to non-light fast inks and the dependence on the work of WG4. Both should be used in ISO but they need to be in synch with the ink standard ISO In order to assure that, the following action item has been created.

10 Page 9 of ISO/TC130/WG3 N 1098 Action item 11/16: Warter, Rich or Smiley to attend the relevant part of WG4 and make sure the issue of light fast inks is addressed in After that has been achieved the document should be finalized in order to meet the requested deadlines by ISO. Action item 11/17: Smiley to finalize the document and submit it by May 9 for balloting as a DIS. 8.7 ISO : , Graphic technology Process control for the manufacture of half-tone colour separation, proofs and production prints Part 7: Proofing processes working directly from digital data (N 954) Mr. Revie led the discussion of what needs to be modified. The committee discussed the need to revise the document. New needs identified include the use of CIEDE2000, substrate and the relationship to certification. This should be incorporated in concert with the regular revision of ISO (Systematic review in 2012). Action item 11/18: Revie to update the list for required revisions for Input is solicited. 8.8 ISO/DIS , Graphic technology Process control for the manufacture of half-tone colour separation, proofs and production prints Part 8: Validation print processes working directly from digital data (N 1038, N 1033) Mr Warter led the discussion. He discussed the two major concerns, which only required editorial corrections. The committee agreed to send the document for ballot as a FDIS. 8.9 ISO/AWI , Graphic Technology - Requirements for printed matter utilizing digital printing technologies for the commercial and industrial production - Part 1: Parameters and measurement methods (N1070, N1069) The NWIP-ballot has been approved and Mr. Kraushaar reviewed the proposed resolution of comments. The committee discussed the purpose of the working draft in light of new ISO directives. This is developing into a family of measurement methods in order to evaluate the printed matter and not primarily the production of the printed matter. As already covered in the current working draft, it combines existing measures used in the ISO series, new metrics such as the M-Score and image quality attributes defined in ISO and the follow up ISO TS Mr. Ito gave a presentation on measurement ISO methods for image quality and their application and validation to the printing industry (N 1082). These included graininess, blurriness, line thickness, patterning and line darkness. Mr. Gaykana, active member of JTC1 SC 28 WG4, pointed out that those metrics should be used with caution since they are in development. Currently there is a round robin test among their members. Mr. Kraushaar mentioned that the Fogra DPWG is joining that activities in order to establish a better collaboration between TC130 WG 3 and JTC1 SC28 WG4. The committee discussed whether these attributes are applicable and pertinent to the graphic art requirements. Mr. Kraushaar described the activities of the Fogra Digital Printing Working Group (DPWG) where those and other image quality attributes are implemented, tested and correlated with the results of psychophysical experiments. The results are published on the DPWG-Webpage. He also invites anyone to

11 Page 10 of ISO/TC130/WG3 N 1098 download the PDF test forms at ( and print them for their typical combinations (and send it then to Fogra). It was agreed to incorporate the M-Score metric, an objective assessment of homogeneity and send the document out to be balloted as CD. Before discussing the parts 2 and 3 Mr. Kraushaar presented a framework, which might be used as an underlying concept for future parts of ISO In order to reflect the different quality expectations of the market, three different levels of quality are proposed by basically defining the overall print quality and the intended agreement ( Colour Match ) between the reference printing condition (recommended but not mandatorily visualized by a proof print) and the digital production: Quality Level A. High print image quality and a high visual agreement between the reference values (proof) and production printing. Quality Level B: A good print image quality combined with a good visual agreement between reference values (proof) and production printing. Quality Level C: Acceptable print image quality and an acceptable visual agreement between reference values (proof) and production prints. By using a dedicated set of quality measures and related aim values and tolerances for each of the three quality levels the most important use cases can be defined independently for the pertinent use cases. However, whilst some attributes can be evaluated and codified without a specific reference (such as the mottling or graininess) the colorimetric accuracy can t, due to varying customer expectations. Therefore the colorimetrical accuracy of the printed matter is further categorized into three different types of image reproduction (or more general colour expectation types):! FCR-Side by Side: also known as FCR-Absolute, provides the established principle of matching a reference characterization data set within the tolerance specified by the pertinent quality level. A typical application would by a trade fair stand asking for matching image content. Full refers to the colorimetrical definition of the entire document though PDF/X-data is perfectly suited.! FCR-Media Relative: provides a colour rendering mechanism where the image content is persevered relatively with respect to pertinent substrate of use. Although the entire document must be colorimetrically defined (including RGB objects) the image reproduction applies with the ICC V4 media relative rendering intent using the option of black point compensation.! PCR: The Partial colour references rendering type refers to print applications where image content is of secondary concern (it is usually restricted to requirements such as legible text) but where parts of the document are colour critical such as a CI colour of a brand logo placed in a mailing or transpromo application. It also covers the potential usage of rendering RGB images based on common appearance algorithms. Each part might then be use of the needed combinations of the quality levels and the three colour expectation types.

12 Page 11 of ISO/TC130/WG3 N 1098 The committee discussed if several quality levels are necessary. It was said that one level becomes a lowest common denominator. Mr. Kraushaar replied that the five star system from System Brunner is successfully used for decades in the printing industry. In particular the relative colorimetrical rendering is very often used in the graphic arts workflows and should therefore be incorporated as an official rendering method. More discussion about that topic is needed and anyone is invited to double check that principle and report the findings at the coming meeting. Finally Mrs. Brunner gave an overview of their work on PCR (product categorization rules) that might be used for a more fine-tuned categorization of use cases in the following parts of ISO (N 1086, N 1087) ISO/PWI , Graphic Technology - Requirements for printed matter utilizing digital printing technologies for the commercial and industrial production Part 2: Commercial Production Printing Mr. Warter reviewed his draft document for part 2 that has not be tabled as a N document but presented at the screen. Facilitating the concept of ISO and the before mentioned quality levels this part is an attempt to measure output quality but for an extended print run. Mr. Kraushaar briefly mentioned potential input for the evaluation of the registration characteristics. Mr. Bravermann and Mr. Kraushaar volunteered to review the document. The committee agreed that this document was worth reviewed to begin the process of a NWIP/WD ballot ISO/PWI , Graphic Technology - Requirements for printed matter utilizing digital printing technologies for the commercial and industrial production Part 3: Large Format Signage Printing Mr. Kraushaar led the discussion. He explained the scope and the related work of the Fogra DPWG. Mrs. Brunner recommended removing the word signage from the title. This was accepted. Similar to the document presented by Mr. Warter a new document should be tabled within the working group as a first candidate for a NWIP/WD ballot ISO/NP , Graphic technology Printing of digital data Part 1: Basic principles (N 1075, N 1071, N 1065, N 1042, N 1043, N 1015) Mr. McDowell led the discussion. He reviewed the proposed resolution of comments. A major concern (comment DE01) was expressed by Mr. Bestmann. From the general content of this document he thinks that it is more like a Technical Specification describing typical use cases for different workflows then an International Standard describing aims and tolerances or describing the necessary content of other parts of a series of standards just like ISO or ISO For a better understanding he required more knowledge about the content of the other parts of this standard series. The committee discussed the intent of the document. The committee discussed whether and were incompatible or if they are targeted at the same end. Mr. Khoury stated that both options are adjusted and represent close but slightly different objectives. It was generally found that it would be better if they could be rationalized. Mr. Smiley testified as to the value of the approach for many major brands and users in the U.S. Among others the optimum number of printing sets (gamuts) and how this fits with the

13 Page 12 of ISO/TC130/WG3 N 1098 available paper grades and especially the disparity of colors (colorant descriptions) for the different stocks. In the light of print being just one channel in the multi-channel publishing world some experts pointed out that 3 or 4 gamuts are enough. On the other hand the usage of the present 7 gamuts were felt appropriate. However it was not clear how the different sets of colorant descriptions (and associated characterization data set) such as the 8 sets of ISO/WD , the 5 sets of gamut type 1 and 2 in ISO and the set defined in ISO should be related to the 7 gamuts currently mentioned in ISO/CD One potential method to correct for remaining differences is the method defined in ISO Mr. Kraushaar explained that this method could be interpreted as the media relative rendering (FCR-R) described before. He raised awareness that this method might only be used when this media relative rendering has been adopted. Action item 11/07 was created to get more information on the so-called substrate correction method. The DIS ballot should be started in conjunction with action item 11/10. Action item 11/19: McDowell, Revie and Khoury to develop an alternate title for When the title and data sets are clarified (and action item 11/10 has been closed), the document will be balloted as a DIS ISO 13656:2000, Graphic technology - Application of reflection densitometry and colorimetry to process control or evaluation of prints and proofs Mr. Kraushaar led the discussion as to whether to withdraw the standard. He explained that some of the relevant information has already been captured in Mr. Haibara mentioned some definitions that should in addition be taken over by ISO (N 1095). That should be done during the CD ballot of ISO China agreed that they would be willing to adopt it as a national standard and that they would withdraw their no vote. The committee was then unanimous in the vote to withdraw. Action item 11/20: Kraushaar to develop a plenary resolution to withdraw ISO

14 Page 13 of ISO/TC130/WG3 N Process Agnostic standards for the packaging industry Mr. Checroun gave a presentation about an idea for the packaging industry (N 1088). He proposed a new file format called pixmap to represent the product before any process restrictions. The committee was sceptical that this would solve the communication concerns and asked for more explanation and information. The following action items should address this. Action Item 11/21: Checroun to submit a written overview of the concept to the committee. Action Item 11/22: Checroun, Smiley, Mortara, Blayo, Carnelli, Beltrami and Warter to work further on this project and submit more input before the next meeting. 9 Supporting Activities (Task Force, Study Groups) 9.1 Printing Certification Requirements - Working Group 13 Dr. Chung previewed the upcoming meeting. 9.2 Environmental Impact of Printed Products (CO 2 ) - Working Group 11 The meeting was held in parallel so there was no report. 9.3 Postpress Processes - Working Group 12 Mr. Wilson and Mr. Widmer reviewed the progress. They have two standards in process and many more planned. 9.4 WG4 - ISO/NP 15397, Graphic technology - Communication of optical and surface properties of printing substrates - Graphic papers for proofing, rotogravure, heat-set web-offset, offset sheets Mr. Lanat reviewed the changes to the document since the last meeting (N 1094). It was agreed that concrete input would be subject for the WG4 meeting. 10 Liaison matters 10.1 ISO/TC42/JWG 24 (ISO 3664:2009) and JWG 8 (ISO 13655:2009) Mr. Kraushaar reported. He is collecting input for future revisions. Mr. McDowell suggested that, in 2013, these should be reviewed together and in conjunction with ISO 5. Based on the action item 10/27 the following action item has been created. Action item 11/23: Lanat, Bickeböller to develop a list of problems/observation that affect measured results (uncertainty, OBA etc.) relating to ISO ISO/JTC1 SC28 WG4 Image Quality Mr. Kraushaar reported. A round robin test is underway Other liaison matters Mr. Urabe reported from the projects of TC 42 WG5 (N 1093).
