1 Drilling Technical Conference Deep-Tech : Exploration for Perfection After the successful kick off of 1 st Drilling Conference in 2011, Drilling Department hosted the 3rd Drilling Technical Conference on nd January Distinguished representatives from esteemed operators and service providers of the oil & gas industry participated to share their knowledge in their respective fields. The conference witnessed technical sessions on various topics and advancements in Drilling Technology. The following papers were presented over the two eventful days.

2 (DAY -1) TECHNICAL SESSION I (PAPER I) NEW TRENDS IN DRILLING TECHNOLOGY MR. BARZIS IRANI FROM APS TECHNOLOGY The presentation covered some of the downhole directional and optimization tools manufactured by APS technologies. The presentation talked about the various advantages and usefulness of Active Vibration Dampeners like mitigating severe Bit and BHA vibrations, increasing bit life, improving drilling efficiency, increasing penetration rates and significant cost / foot savings. The presentation also discussed the Electromagnetic MWD and its advantages like improved reliability, faster data transmission rates, no LCM restrictions, increased depth capabilities and 2 way communication. Few slides were also presented on the Rotary Steerable Motors regarding its flexibility, reach and simplicity. TAKE AWAY Active Vibration Dampeners for mitigating Bit and BHA vibrations, increasing bit life, improving drilling efficiency, increasing penetration rates and reducing cost / foot. These tools are to be hired from service providers and incorporated while drilling the 12.1/4 inch hole section below 2000m and the 8.1/2 hole section (DAY -1)

3 TECHNICAL SESSION I (PAPER II) OFFSHORE DRILLING OPENING UP A NEW ERA FOR OIL MR. GHANA GOGOI FROM OIL INDIA LIMITED Mr Ghana Gogoi, Head CEMG presented on what are the challenges in the offshore front under NELP / PSC regime and the measures to be taken for facing those challenges. E&P experts have said the future of fossil energy lies in deep water offshore or the Frontier areas of the Globe. After the Dhirubhai discovery, new vistas have opened up in Indian waters for more exploration and development. Offshore Gas hydrates are another big emerging picture for world energy supply and Indian Coastal areas have huge potential of gas hydrates. Although technology is in its nascent stage the most experienced offshore operators will take the first bite of the cake once technology is developed. Oil is a very strong onshore E&P national oil company. However, Oil s onshore experience is no more sufficient as the big opportunity has shifted to offshore. At the same time Oil s offshore focus has been lost from the late nineties onwards. The various deepwater challenges like environmental challenges, technical challenges, riser challenges and station keeping challenges needs to be understood and mitigated for a successful offshore project. The presentation summarized that the E&P business in future will run on PSC model, offshore environment is completely different from onshore for which skill development and technology use are very essential and for OIL to catch the big picture in offshore areas all offshore blocks should be brought under offshore division (DAY -1) TECHNICAL SESSION I (PAPER III)

4 DRILLING IN MIZORAM A CRITICAL REVIEW MR. GAUTAM NAHA BISWAS FROM OIL INDIA LIMITED Mizoram is considered a hydrocarbon prospective area considering the fact that it is surrounded by Gas fields of Bangladesh, Myanmar and Tripura. Little geo-scientific data, along with difficult logistics and limited working window compared to rest of India, makes Mizoram a challenging area for drilling. But despite all the hurdles drilling activities for the first proposed well AIBAWK-1 (TD= 4500m) have been started and presently a depth of 2197m has been achieved. 5 PAPER IV DRILLING OPTIMIZATION AND AUTOMATION MR. STEPHEN PINK FROM NATIONAL OILWELL VARCO The presentation covered how Dynamic Drilling Solutions built on accurate data can improve drilling performance. Dynamic Drilling Solutions focuses primarily on instrumentation, sensors, measurement tools, directional, dynamics and software products. Its services includes tiered suite of drilling optimization and automation services, including data management, surface data collation, integration, visualization, memory-based drilling optimization, pulsed RT drilling optimization, and application management to full WDP automation packages. The process involves analysis, planning, execution and evaluation.

6 TECHNICAL SESSION - II PAPER V APPLICATION OF RSS FOR DRILLING OPTIMIZATION MR. SUKESH GANDA SCHLUMBERGER ASIA SERVICES LTD ROTARY STEERABLE SYSTEMS APPLICATION FOR DRILLING OPTIMIZATION The presentation discussed in detail the advantages of drilling with Rotary Steerable Systems viz: steady deviation control, less drag, faster ROP, less buckling risk, cleaner and smoother hole, less risk of stuck pipe, longer reach (ERD), complex well design and good TVD control. Case studies in India have shown that RSS applications have led to 450% increment in ROP, average reduction in number of trips from 8 to 2 and average reduction in equivalent drilling days from 34 to 5 days.

7 TECHNICAL SESSION - II PAPER VI SCIENCE BEHIND BIT MR. ASIF ZAFAR FROM HALLIBURTON DRILL BIT AND SERVICES The presentation covered advancements in Fixed Cutter Drill Bit Technology, advancements in Roller Cone drill bit technology, developments in Concentric Hole Enlargement Tools and unique Coring System Designs. The important advancements made in fixed cutter drilling technology are the multi level force balancing, improved PDC cutter technology and impregnated drill bits. The advanced energy balancing technology, engineered hydraulics and dual seal dual compensation bearing design are some of the major advancements in Roller Cone drill bit technology. TAKE AWAY To procure new technology fixed cutter bits for using with Rotary Steerable Systems and high performance Roller Cone Bits for optimizing drilling performance.

8 TECHNICAL SESSION - III PAPER VII CEMENTING OVERVIEW AND APPLICATION OF LIGHT WEIGHT SLURRY MR. PRANAB KOLACHANA FROM LAND SERVICES AND WELL SERVICES SCHLUMBERGER LiteCRETE and CemCRETE cementing technology optimizes particle size distribution, maximizes solid content, improves slurry properties and enhances set cement mechanical properties. Case studies have shown that its low density prevent losses, its high solid content increases compressive strength, its gas tight properties prevents gas migration and its design improves mud removal. CemSTRESS cementing concept can be applied for long term well integrity. The design provides a cement system which is flexible, improves integrity in dynamic stress environment and can withstand repeated stress cycles.

SUNIL DOODRAJ AND K K NAIK GM; CAIRN INDIA DRILLING PERFORMANCES, ACHIEVEMENTS AND BEST PRACTICES IN CAIRN ENERGY Cairn India s Zero Tolerance & Life-Savers provide clear and simple do s and don ts covering activities with potential safety risk. The Zero Tolerance and Life Savers are rules that are linked to controls and barriers which, when used properly, prevents or avoids Injury to people. Cairn Energy follows stringent HSE practices and do not hesitate to shut down rigs on critical HSE non compliance. Drilling performances are optimized by deploying custom designed rapid rigs for development drilling, customized pad design for development drilling, use of environment friendly synthetic based mud for preventing shale instability and associated problems, use of unitized well heads, proper bit selection, Geomechanical modeling and optimum cement slurry design.

10 TECHNICAL SESSION III PAPER IX LINER TOP REPAIRING BY SQUEEZ CEMENTING MR. B. GOSWAMI AND B. GANGULI OIL INDIA LIMITED A case study was presented regarding repairing of liner top by Oil India Limited s Cementing Team when the liner top packer was damaged beyond repair. Cement was squeezed by hesitation method following a successful injectivity test. Subsequent CBL- VDL showed good cement bonding and cement top was found near the liner top. Pressure testing as per normal industry practice was also successful. The innovative process saved Oil India Limited of around 15 Rig days.

11 TECHNICAL SESSION III PAPER X VISION DRILLING INTROSPECTION AND PERCEPTION OIL INDIA LIMITE BY MR. SANJIB GOGOI FROM OIL INDIA LIMITED The different measure that needs to be taken for reducing non productive time was discussed in the presentation. Various measures for improving drilling performance were also presented. The replacement of old AC-SCR drilling rigs, procurement or hiring of mobile rigs for carrying out extensive production testing, PAD concept for development drilling, procurement of new technology roller cone, fixed cutter and hybrid bits, bit consignment concept, use of various downhole and surface drilling optimization tools and bench marking of drilling operations is expected to improve the cycle speed by at least 40%.

12 TECHNICAL SESSION III PAPER XI BY MR. GANDHI FROM NABORS INDIA PVT LTD DRILLING CHALLENGES IN HIGH PRESSURE AND HIGH TEMPERATURE ENVIRONTMENT The challenges for drilling in high pressure and high temperature environment involves the surface equipment, drill through equipment, downhole equipment, drilling practices and well control. Kick detection and control is challenging due to solubility of gas in OBMs and requires special attention. Elastomers, Seals and Other Pressure Control Elements used are to be compatible to withstand anticipated temperature and should also be chemically compatible to the drilling fluids used. The key to success in high pressure and high temperature environment are use of high temperature proven tools and fluids, engagement of competent service providers, involving service providers in decision making and problem solving, knowledge and best practices sharing between operating companies and incentive to R&D for developing technology and techniques to combat high temperature challenges.
