2 Lead vocal: John Prior to leaving for an extended trip to India to study Transcendental Meditation in early 1968, the Beatles recorded several new songs to fill the sides of their upcoming single, which would be released while they were away. John had originally wanted his new composition, Across The Universe, for the A-side of the single but was still not happy with the mix of the song. When the Beatles sat down to decide which two of their new recordings should be used, John preferred Across the Universe remain on the shelf for the time being, giving Paul s more commercial Lady Madonna the A-side. Across The Universe was written entirely by John and was recorded February 4, 1968, in eight takes. Overdubs were recorded on February 8. Comedian and author Spike Milligan had been at Abbey Road when the group was working on the song and some months later inquired about it. He was surprised to learn that Across the Universe was sitting unreleased in EMI s vault, so Milligan asked Lennon to donate the song to a charity album he was organizing for the World Wildlife Fund. Milligan was a British comedy legend who, along with Peter Sellers, starred in The Goon Show, one of John s all-time favorite programs. Paul McCartney Calico Skies Flaming Pie 97 Written in America during the McCartney s annual family holiday in the Hamptons in August This is the earliest recording on the album. The Beatles - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocal: John Recorded March 1, John Lennon s classic song of psychedelic imagery was inspired by a drawing brought home by son, Julian, who was four years old at the time. In February 1967, Julian returned home from his nursery school with a painting depicting one of his classmates, Lucy O Donnell. Young Lucy was pictured with a background of stars in the sky. When asked by his father about his painting, Julian said it was Lucy, in the sky, with diamonds. John was so taken with the phrase he

3 combined it with passages similar to two books by Lewis Carroll that he d loved as a child, Through The Looking Glass and Alice s Adventures in Wonderland. Paul added the line about newspaper taxis and Lennon s beloved Goon Show got a shout out. Their famed plasticine ties merged with Through the Looking Glass to become plasticine porters with looking glass ties. Work began on Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds with an evening full of rehearsals. The rhythm track was recorded on March 1 with Paul playing the opening riff on a Lowery organ (with a bell stop), George on acoustic guitar, Ringo on drums and John on maracas and offering a guide vocal. John s lead vocal and other instruments (George s tamboura, Paul s melodic bass) were added the next evening. 4 4 The fifth original composition by George Harrison to be recorded by The Beatles was completed on November 8, 1965 in one take with overdubs under the working title Won t Be There With You. The song features Paul playing his bass through a fuzz box to give it a distorted sound. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Got To Get You Into My Life - Revolver Lead vocal: Paul Another Paul McCartney solo composition, Paul called this stand out track an ode to pot, like someone else might write an ode to chocolate or a good claret (wine). Work began on the song on April 7, 1966, and this early alternate version can be heard on the Anthology 2 album. It was the second song recorded for the Revolver album. The Beatles returned to the song the next day with an improved arrangement that included John and George on fuzz guitars. On May 18 they revisited the song again, devoting a full 12-hour session to rework and complete the song. To give the song its Motown feel, five outside musicians were brought in to add brass and saxophones. An additional dual guitar overdub was added on June 17. Got To Get You Into My Life was the opening song performed on the final Wings tour in On U.S. album: Revolver - Capitol LP The Beatles - I Should Have Known Better - A Hard Day s Night

5 Lead vocal: John Following their triumphant visit to America The Beatles were thrust back to work. On February 25, 1964 they dove into new songs slated for their film. On this day they recorded You Can t Do That and began work on Paul s And I Love Her and John s I Should Have Known Better. In the film I Should Have Known Better was performed in the train compartment scene, which in reality was the interior of a van with crew members rocking the van to fake the train in motion. Used as the flip side of the U.S. A Hard Day s Night single. Paul s Things We Said Today was the UK b-side. Recorded Feb , On U.S. album: A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Hey Jude - Apple LP (1970) I Call Your Name - Long Tall Sally EP Lead vocal: John Composed by John Lennon and originally given to Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas to use as the b-side of another Lennon song (credited to Lennon-McCartney), Bad to Me. Both songs had been recorded at Abbey Road by Kramer and band on June 27, 1963, with Paul McCartney in attendance. The Beatles version was recorded in seven takes on March 1, On U.S. album: The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP U.K.: Non-album track (EP song) 9.27 BREAK

6 The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: John Originally recorded on October 12, 1965, The Beatles decided to scrap this version and re-record the song nine days later, on October 21. George Harrison provides the sitar, the first appearance of the instrument on a Beatles recording, though the sitar can be heard in the instrumental introduction on the American version of Help! Written mainly by John with some lyrical assistance from Paul. John: I was trying to write about an affair without letting me wife know so it was very gobbledegook. I was sort of writing from my experiences, girls flats. Paul has said that the ending lyrics, so I lit a fire, refer to the house being burned down in an act of revenge by the spurned lover. Bob Dylan did a slight parody of the song on his 1966 album, Blonde on Blonde. Check out the song 4 th Time Around. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - One After March 5, 1963 Lead vocal: John and Paul One of the oldest songs in the Lennon-McCartney catalog, One After 909 had been written by John when he was 17 or 18, and had been performed by the Quarrymen in

7 1960, and by the Beatles in their pre-fame club days. The song was first recorded by the Beatles at the March 5, 1963, session for their third EMI single. After completing both sides of the new single ( From Me To You and Thank You Girl ), John and Paul had two additional songs they wanted the group to record. In addition to One After 909 they also brought in What Goes On, but there was only enough time in the session to record one additional song, so One After 909 got the go-ahead. Six years later the group revisited the song, with Billy Preston on keyboards. In his 1980 Playboy interview, Lennon admitted the song was probably resurrected for Let It Be because of a lack of material. As the rooftop performance drew to a close John sang an impromptu line from Danny Boy. The previously unreleased 1963 version can be found on the Anthology 1 album. The first official double "A" side release of We Can Work It Out Inspired in part by John and George's first experience with acid, "Day Tripper" was written under pressure for use as a single for the Christmas season. John wrote most of the song, with Paul contributing to each of the verses BREAK FOR QUIZ #1 HERE Who s singing that Beatles song?

The only Beatles song inspired by a woman in New Jersey who dressed in polythene (but not jack boots or kilts). Written in India, demoed for the White LP. Lennon 1.00 / The Beatles She Came In Through The Bathroom Window - Abbey Road Recorded July 25 th Written while in NYC to announce Apple. Based on a true story about some Scruffs breaking into Paul house at St. John s Wood. Paul wrote w/ Joe Cocker in mind who later coved it as he did with most Beatle songs.

10 McCartney 1.00 The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money - Abbey Road Lead vocal: Paul The famous Abbey Road medley begins with Paul s You Never Give Me Your Money, a song which itself consists of three segments. In Barry Miles Many Years From Now, McCartney states that the first part of the song was him directly lambasting Allen Klein s attitude to us: no money, just funny paper, all promises and it never works out. It s basically a song about no faith in the person. The reference to funny paper was the numerous bank statements and other official looking documents that claimed they had stocks and bonds or money in various bank accounts, but to the band members it always seemed imaginary; they were rich on paper. The second part is a nostalgic bit about being out of college with money spent, leading to the third section, about an optimistic escape ( Soon we ll be away from here. Step on the gas and wipe that tear away ) inspired by Paul and Linda hitting the road to get away from it all. Recording began on May 6, 1969, at Trident Studios, with Paul on piano and offering a guide vocal marching the group through 36 takes. John playing a distorted guitar part on his Epiphone Casino, George playing his Telecaster and Ringo on drums. At Abbey Road Studios, Paul recorded his lead vocal on July 1 and added bass guitar on July 11. On July 15, Paul, John and George recorded backing vocals. It was during this session that the nursery rhyme ending ( One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, all good children go to heaven ) was recorded. The finishing touch, added August 5, was the crossfade (tubular bells, birds, chirping crickets and bubbles) which takes the song into Sun King. The Beatles - Taxman - Revolver (Harrison) Lead vocal: George

11 Completed in 11 takes on April 21, Written by George when he started realizing the majority of his money was going to the British government in the form of taxes. George went to John Lennon for some help with the lyrics, and Lennon was especially pleased with his line Now my advice for those who die: declare the pennies on your eyes. Featuring a nice lead guitar solo by Paul on his Epiphone Casino. The pennies lyrical reference derives from Greek mythology it is the payment to Charon (the ferryman of the underworld) to ferry the deceased to their destination in the underworld. To pay the ferryman, the deceased person's relatives place a coin on each eye of the deceased. The Mr. Wilson and Mr. Heath mentioned in the song were real people. Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister and Edward Heath was head of the opposition party at the time the song was recorded. It is the first time a George Harrison composition opens a British Beatles album. On U.S. album: Revolver - Capitol LP 9.57 BREAK Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello You Want Her Too (written with MacManus) - Flowers in the Dirt 89 A throwback to the John and Paul singing alternate lines of a song. The Beatles - You Won t See Me - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: Paul

12 Written entirely by Paul. Recorded in two takes on November 11, 1965, at the final recording session for the Rubber Soul album. The song is notable for Paul s melodic bass line, something new to rock and roll. Paul: It was very Motown-flavored. It's got a James Jamerson feel. He was the Motown bass player, he was fabulous, the guy who did all those great melodic bass lines. It was him, me and Brian Wilson who were doing melodic bass lines at that time. Beatles roadie Mal Evans is credited on the album s back cover with playing Hammond organ on this track, but it is inaudible in the final mix. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP Paul McCartney Oo You McCartney 70 The first three tracks were recorded at home, while the lyrics were written during another hurried lunch. Aerosol spray was used as an instrument in the song. The Beatles - The Ballad Of John And Yoko - Non-LP track Lead vocal: John The Beatles twentieth single release for EMI, and third on the Apple Records label. The first Beatles single issued in stereo in the UK, it is also the very first stereo single issued by EMI. The Get Back single had been released in stereo in America by Capitol. Recorded on April 14, 1969, by just John and Paul, the song was completed that day. George was on vacation and Ringo was still filming the Peter Sellers comedy The Magic Christian. Producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick, who had distanced themselves from the group because of the constant bickering amongst the group members, were back on board behind the recording console. The single was a complete surprise to Beatles fans. They had waited a long seven months for the group to followup Hey Jude with Get Back and now just over a month came another new Beatles record. The rhythm track was perfected in 11 takes (four complete) with Paul playing drums while John played acoustic guitar and sang the lead vocal. The duo was in good spirits during the day-long session.

13 The Beatles - I Will - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul One of Paul McCartney s most cherished ballads, I Will was recorded in 67 takes on September 16, 1968, with Paul on acoustic guitar, Ringo playing maracas and cymbals, and John on temple blocks, tapping out a beat with wood on metal. George Harrison was not at this session. Not all 67 takes were complete run-throughs, and as Paul was still putting the finishing touches on the song, he would drift into other songs during the numerous takes. Of particular note was take 19, which included a 2:21 untitled song with lyrics along the lines of Can you take me back where I came from, can you take me back? Twenty-eight seconds of this song were used as a link between Cry Baby Cry and Good Night on Side 4 of the White Album John Lennon Jealous Guy Imagine 71 Originally written as Child of Nature, which was taken from a lecture from Marahashi Mahesh Yogi, which also inspired the Paul McCartney tune, Mother Nature s Son. The musicians included are Klaus Voorman (bass), Nicky Hopkins (who played on Revolution ) John Barham and Moody Blues keyboardist Mike Pinder (to play Mellotron). The romantic side of Paul McCartney & John Lennon who both got married within a week of each this time in March 1969 BREAK FOR NEWS HERE - w/ Jackie DeShannon

BREAK Bumper/ The Beatles - I ll Be Back - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John Recorded in 16 takes on June 1, I'll Be Back was written mostly by John Lennon, and was a reworking of the chords to Del Shannon's 1961 hit Runaway. Beatles fans in America would have to wait five months to hear this exquisite Beatles song, one of Lennon finest compositions, because Capitol Records held it off their Something New album and released it on Beatles 65 in December On U.S. album:

(Saturday) Got to #1 UK Only #4 here The Beatles - Lady Madonna - Non-LP Track Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles seventeenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. The last original issue Beatles 45 to appear on the Capitol swirl label in the U.S. or on the Parlophone label in the UK. Starting in the summer of 1968, Beatles recordings would be issued on their own record label, Apple Records. The Beatles did not leave EMI

16 or Capitol, they simply had their own custom label, to which they could sign artists. The manufacturing and distribution would remain the same as before. In fact, in America, their releases continued to use Capitol album and single catalog numbering. The Beatles oft-postponed visit to India to study Transcendental Meditation under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was fast approaching. They were scheduled to be in India from mid-february until late April. Written entirely by Paul, Lady Madonna was the first song to be recorded in the week-long rush to get a single finished before they left for India. It was completed in two straight-forward sessions on February 3, 1968 with some overdubs on February 6. The basic rhythm track consisted of only Paul on piano, and Ringo on drums (using brushes instead of sticks), recorded in three takes on the afternoon of February 3. John and George overdubbed fuzzed guitars played through the same amplifier during that evening s session. The song was completed on February 6 with the addition of a second McCartney lead vocal, a second piano piece, See how they run backing vocals from Paul, John and George, and in the middle eight, the three Beatles cupping their hands around their mouths to imitate the sound of brass instruments. But Paul decided the song needed real brass instruments, so four saxophone players were brought in that evening to play on the song. Lady Madonna was a number one single in Britain, but in America is did not reach the top of the charts. Billboard had it peaking at number four. Cashbox and Record World charted it as high as number two. Despite not reaching the top of the charts in America, the single sold over one million copies within a month. Released on March 15, 1968 in the UK and March 18, 1968 in the U.S. On U.S. album: Hey Jude - Capitol LP The Beatles - Hey Bulldog - Yellow Submarine

17 Lead vocal: John In early February 1968, the Beatles were on a tight schedule. They had two weeks to audition and record possible songs for their next single, which would be released while they were away on an extended trip to India where the group would meditate with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In addition to picking the single sides they would need to spend a day with a film crew making a short promotional film for the song. The Paul McCartney-penned Lady Madonna was chosen as the A-side and would be the subject of the promo film. On the last weekend of recording, the Beatles were informed they were one song short of the four new songs needed for Yellow Submarine, and a new song had to be recorded before they left for India. The song shortage was due to Baby, You re A Rich Man, which had been earmarked for the film soundtrack, being used as the B-side of the All You Need Is Love single. The Beatles - Glass Onion - The Beatles Lead vocal: John In 1980 John described Glass Onion as one of his throwaways, but the word play in the song is fascinating. Aside from many references to other Beatles songs, listeners were probably left guessing what Lennon meant by phrases such as bent backed tulips, cast iron shore, and dovetail joint. Specifically the phrase looking through the bent backed tulips to see how the other half lives referred to a floral arrangement on display at the posh London restaurant Parkes. The Cast Iron Shore is a name for Liverpool s beach, and a dovetail joint is not a drug reference, but a type of construction wood joint. The title Glass Onion is British slang for monocle (or eye piece), and was one of the names suggested by John for the Iveys, an Apple band that changed its name to Badfinger. BREAK WINNER HERE! 20 20 BREAK Birthday list here...are there any John/Johnny s here? The Beatles - Birthday - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul with John Birthday is a song written entirely by Paul McCartney in the studio on September 18, 1968, while he waited for the other Beatles to arrive. The session that afternoon was purposely scheduled to start two hours earlier than usual so the Beatles could take a break and walk to Paul s home and watch The Girl Can t Help It, the 1956 rock and roll film starring Jayne Mansfield and featuring the likes of Little Richard, Fats Domino, the Platters, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran. The movie was having its British television premiere on the BBC that evening, and Paul lived around the corner from Abbey Road Studios, on Cavendish Avenue. The instrumental backing track included Paul on Epiphone Casino electric guitar, George Harrison on Fender Bass VI (a six-string bass guitar), John on Epiphone Casino electric guitar and Ringo on drums. By the 20th take

21 the backing track was complete and the Beatles headed out to Paul s house to watch the movie. When they returned to the studio they worked on overdubs. In addition to Paul s scorching lead vocal, overdubs included piano, drums, lead guitar, bass guitar, tambourine (played by George with gloves on so he wouldn t get blisters), handclaps, and backing vocals. While Paul is predominantly the lead vocalist, he is joined on occasion by John. The female voices heard on the birthday refrain in the middle eight belong to Pattie Harrison and Yoko Ono. George Harrison It s Johnny s Birthday - All Things Must Pass 70 Recorded in commemoration of John Lennon s 30 th birthday on October 9 th. It was a little too close to Cliff Richards, Congratulations, which was the UK Eurovision Song Contest entry that year. George Harrison What Is Life - All Things Must Pass 70 George wrote this song in 1969 while traveling to a Billy Preston session at Olympic Studios. This would be the second single released off the album, though it was listed as the B-Side for My Sweet Lord, in the UK. Although it should have been noted as a Double-A Single. Eric Clapton provides lead guitar. BREAK Ready for a unified sigh of pleasure listen.

22 The Beatles - In My Life - Rubber Soul Lead vocals: John with Paul Recorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his first real major piece of work. Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves -- Eleanor Rigby and In My Life. Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the entire melody on John s Mellotron. The gorgeous piano solo is provided by George Martin. To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at regular speed it would be in the correct key for the song. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP ] BREAK Ok it s time to dance and clap. And rattle yer jewelry I never heard what that sounds like is there any jewelry in here to rattle? The Beatles - Twist And Shout Please Please Me (Medley-Russell) Lead vocal: John The last song recorded during the marathon session on February 11, Two takes were completed before Lennon s voice gave out. The released version is the first take. Originally recorded by The Isley Brothers in May 1962, The Beatles performed it

I Want to Hold Your Hand was the Beatles first single issued by Capitol Records. It is the song that launched Beatlemania in the United States. It was written equally by John and Paul in the basement music room in Richard and Margaret Asher s house at 57 Wimpole Street in the west end of London in September Paul had been dating the couple s daughter, actress Jane Asher, and was spending a lot of time at the Asher home whenever he was in London. Paul would eventually accept an invitation to move in, taking up residence in their attic. The Hi Riders Stamp Out The Beatles Single `64

24 The Beatles - She Loves You - A Collection Of Oldies `66 Lead vocal: John and Paul The Beatles fourth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. With a July 1, 1963 recording date looming The Beatles knew their latest composition would be their next a-side: a song then entitled Get You In the End, shortened to I ll Get You by the time it was released. But things changed on June 26, In a hotel room a few hours prior to a show in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, John and Paul sat facing each other on twin beds and proceeded to write from Paul s suggestion. The song they created was She Loves You. The next day, with The Beatles having a rare day off from touring, John met up with Paul in the dining room of the McCartney s Forthlin Road home to finish up the song. The Beatles - Any Time At All - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John

25 Recorded June 2, 1964, the last day of recording for the A Hard Day s Night album. John Lennon: An effort at writing It Won't Be Long - same ilk. C to A minor, C to A minor with me shouting. The song was in an unfinished state when Lennon brought it to the band to record on June 2. The group worked out the arrangement throughout the day and night. Up against the wall on a deadline to submit the album, the piano section in the middle eight was left without lyrics. They had run out of time. On April 8, 1988, Lennon's handwritten lyrics for Any Time At All were sold for 6,000 at an auction held at Sotheby's in London. On U.S. album: Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - Eight Days A Week - Beatles For Sale Lead vocal: John Recorded primarily on October 6, It is the first instance of the Beatles taking an unfinished idea into the studio and experimenting with different approaches to a song. Eight Days A Week is the first pop song with a fade-in introduction. Written mostly by Paul, the title was taken from a line spoken by a limo driver. McCartney: I was being driven over to visit John. The chauffeur was talking away to me, saying how hard his boss worked the staff, so hard that they seem to do eight days a week. We ve altered the plot a bit for the song, of course. The bloke loves the girl eight days a week. In

26 later years John Lennon incorrectly referred to this title in interviews as the original working title for the film Help! The actual working title of Help! was Eight Arms To Hold You. On September 20, 1964 as the band and their entourage flew to their final North American Tour concert destination, the press corps on board the Beatles private plane witnessed from a distance, careful not to interrupt, the four Beatles huddled together working on a new song. John, Paul, and George on guitars and Ringo tapping his knees, and all humming the tune of what would become Eight Days A Week. Released as a single b/w I Don t Want To Spoil The Party in the U.S. on February 15, On U.S. album: Beatles VI - Capitol LP The Beatles - All My Loving With The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Essentially a Paul McCartney solo composition. The first song performed on the live broadcast of The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, and watched by a thenrecord 72 million viewers. McCartney has said it was the first song he ever wrote where he had the words before the music. Recorded in 13 takes on July 30, All My Loving is the most commercial Lennon-McCartney song recorded by The Beatles in 1963 that was not released as a single in the UK or U.S. On U.S. album: Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP BREAK..HERE?? Wings Give Ireland Back to the Irish Written in response to the events of Bloody Sunday that occurred in Northern Ireland on January 30, From our point of view," said Paul McCartney, "it was the first time people questioned what we were doing in Ireland. It was so shocking. I wrote 'Give Ireland Back to the Irish', we recorded it and I was promptly 'phoned by the Chairman of EMI, Sir Joseph Lockwood, explaining that they wouldn't release it. He thought it was too inflammatory. I told him that I felt strongly about it and they had to release it. He said, 'Well it'll be banned', and of course it was. I knew 'Give Ireland Back to the Irish' wasn't an easy route, but it just seemed to me to be the time. All of us in Wings felt the same about it. But Henry McCullough s brother who lived in Northern Ireland was beaten up because of it. The thugs found out that Henry was in Wings."?
