2 2 Lead vocal: John The Beatles, with Billy Preston on keyboards, and with Glyn Johns as producer, recorded 35 takes at Trident Studios on February 22, From that session, take 9 was the best for the early part of the song, take 20 had the best middle eight, and take 32 was the best for the rest. The three best sections were edited into one all-encompassing master take. On April 18, at Abbey Road Studios, without Preston, and with Chris Thomas producing, John and George overdubbed layers of guitar parts onto the Trident best take, and a reduction mixdown was made, called take 1. Overdubs were added onto that. More overdubs followed on April 20. Fast forward to August 8. Now with George Martin producing, John overdubs sounds from the white noise generator of Harrison s Moog synthesizer which produced the swirling, gale-force wind effect for the last three minutes of the song, and Ringo adds more drums (mostly crash cymbals). To complicate things, the group has been adding overdubs to two different master tapes of the song, so the best of each master is edited together to create the final album version of the song. The final album master has take 1 for the first 4:37 and the original Trident tape for the remaining 3:07. The final album master of John s sprawling song ran 8:04, but John opted for a surprise ending. Engineer Alan Parsons: We were putting the final touches to that side of the LP and we were listening to the mix. John said, There! Cut the tape. Geoff [Emerick] cut the tape and that was it. End of side one. At 7:44 it is second only to the sound collage/clip compilation Revolution 9 as the longest Beatles track. It was the last song to be mixed for inclusion on the Abbey Road album. This final mixing date, August 20, 1969, is significant in Beatles history - it is the last time all four Beatles were together in a recording studio. BREAK The Beatles - One After Let It Be Lead vocal: John and Paul One of the oldest songs in the Lennon-McCartney catalog, One After 909 had been written by John when he was 17 or 18, and had been performed by the Quarrymen in 1960, and by the Beatles in their pre-fame club days. The song was first recorded by the Beatles at the March 5, 1963, session for their third EMI single. After completing both sides of the new single ( From Me To You and Thank You Girl ), John and Paul had two additional songs they wanted the group to record. In addition to One After 909 they also brought in What Goes On, but there was only enough time in the session to record one additional song, so One After 909 got the go-ahead. Six years later the group revisited the song, with Billy Preston on keyboards. In his 1980 Playboy

3 3 interview, Lennon admitted the song was probably resurrected for Let It Be because of a lack of material. As the rooftop performance drew to a close John sang an impromptu line from Danny Boy. The previously unreleased 1963 version can be found on the Anthology 1 album. The Beatles - I m Looking Through You - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul after an argument with then-girlfriend, actress Jane Asher. Initially recorded on October 24, 1965, the song was re-recorded from scratch on November 6, but McCartney was still not satisfied. Four days later, on November 10, the group took another stab at it. Paul s lead vocal was superimposed the next day. The version issued by Capitol Records has two false starts. They had two weeks to audition and record possible songs for their next single, which would be released while

4 4 they were away on an extended trip to India where the group would meditate with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In addition to picking the single sides they would need to spend a day with a film crew making a short promotional film for the song. The Paul McCartney-penned Lady Madonna was chosen as the A-side and would be the subject of the promo film. On the last weekend of recording, the Beatles were informed they were one song short of the four new songs needed for Yellow Submarine, and a new song had to be recorded before they left for India. The song shortage was due to Baby, You re A Rich Man, which had been earmarked for the film soundtrack, being used as the B-side of the All You Need Is Love single. 6 6 Written entirely by Paul in March 1966 while on vacation with then-girlfriend Jane Asher at the Swiss ski resort of Klosters. The backing track was recorded in 10 takes on May 9, 1966 with only Paul (piano) and Ringo (drums) present. John and George do not perform on this song. Overdubs included Paul on clavichord, and Ringo on cymbals and maracas. Paul s lead vocal was recorded on May 16. The baroque-style French horn solo was credited to Alan Civil and recorded on May 19. Ringo s original drum part was removed from the track in the reduction mixdown. The song was originally called Why Did It Die? Paul: I was in Switzerland on my first skiing holiday. I'd done a bit of skiing in Help! and quite liked it, so I went back and ended up in a little bathroom in a Swiss chalet writing For No One. I remember the descending bass line trick that it's based on, and I remember the character in the song - the girl putting on her make-up. Lead vocal: John Recorded in six takes on June 15, The first Beatles song to include a reference to getting high ( I get high when I see you go by ). The working title prior to lyrics being written was That s a Nice Hat. George Martin and his Orchestra recorded the instrumental version of It s Only Love using the original title. 9 9 The Beatles - I Me Mine - Let It Be (Harrison) Lead vocal: George It should be noted that none of the Beatles rehearsals at Twickenham Studios in January 1969 were recorded on multi-track. Those official recordings took place at Apple headquarters, either in the studio set up in the basement or on the rooftop during their concert. In the Let It Be film George can be heard playing his song I Me Mine to Ringo while John and Yoko dance a waltz. He had composed the song the night before in five minutes flat. Unfortunately, George s song was not one the group recorded when they went to Apple Studios to record the new album tracks. Because the song was being used in the film it needed to be recorded for the soundtrack album, prompting George, Paul and Ringo to return to Abbey Road Studios on January 3, 1970, to record the song. John was on vacation in Denmark. Had he been in London it is doubtful he would have attended the session because he had quit the band in September Sixteen basic tracks were recorded with George playing acoustic guitar, Paul on bass guitar and Ringo on drums. Overdubs recorded that day were electric piano, electric guitar, new lead and backing vocals and a second acoustic guitar part. The original running time was 1:53. To flesh out the song for the Let It Be album, producer Phil Spector cleverly edited the song to repeat a section and extend it by 51 seconds. At the 1:53 mark, just after the line flowing more freely than wine, the song jumps back to the :32 mark to the line all through the day. This leads back into the hard-rocking I me me mine segment and continues past flowing more freely than wine until the song ends. He also added orchestration. The original shorter version of the song can be heard on the Anthology 3 album. The Beatles - Any Time At All - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John Recorded June 2, 1964, the last day of recording for the A Hard Day s Night album. John Lennon: An effort at writing It Won't Be Long - same ilk. C to A minor, C to A minor with me shouting. The song was in an unfinished state when Lennon brought it to the band to record on June 2. The group worked out the arrangement throughout the day and night. Up against the wall on a deadline to submit the album, the piano section in the middle eight was left without lyrics. They had run out of time. On April 8, 1988, Lennon's handwritten lyrics for Any Time At All were sold for 6,000 at an auction held at Sotheby's in London. On U.S. album: Something New - Capitol LP

10 10 The Beatles - Eight Days A Week - Beatles For Sale Lead vocal: John Recorded primarily on October 6, It is the first instance of the Beatles taking an unfinished idea into the studio and experimenting with different approaches to a song. Eight Days A Week is the first pop song with a fade-in introduction. Written mostly by Paul, the title was taken from a line spoken by a limo driver. McCartney: I was being driven over to visit John. The chauffeur was talking away to me, saying how hard his boss worked the staff, so hard that they seem to do eight days a week. We ve altered the plot a bit for the song, of course. The bloke loves the girl eight days a week. In later years John Lennon incorrectly referred to this title in interviews as the original working title for the film Help! The actual working title of Help! was Eight Arms To Hold You. On September 20, 1964 as the band and their entourage flew to their final North American Tour concert destination, the press corps on board the Beatles private plane witnessed from a distance, careful not to interrupt, the four Beatles huddled together working on a new song. John, Paul, and George on guitars and Ringo tapping his knees, and all humming the tune of what would become Eight Days A Week. 11 11 The Beatles - I Should Have Known Better - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John Following their triumphant visit to America The Beatles were thrust back to work. On February 25, 1964 they dove into new songs slated for their film. On this day they recorded You Can t Do That and began work on Paul s And I Love Her and John s I Should Have Known Better. In the film I Should Have Known Better was performed in the train compartment scene, which in reality was the interior of a van with crew members rocking the van to fake the train in motion. Used as the flip side of the U.S. A Hard Day s Night single. Paul s Things We Said Today was the UK b-side. Recorded Feb , On U.S. album: A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Hey Jude - Apple LP (1970) The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) Lead vocals: Paul and John When Paul McCartney was in the U.S. in early April 1967 he came up with the idea for a Beatles television film about a mystery tour on a bus. During the April 11 flight back home he began writing lyrics for the title song and sketching out some ideas for the film. Upon his arrival in London, Paul pitched his idea to Brian Epstein who happily approved. Paul then met with John to go over the details and the two began work on the film s title track. The title track was written primarily by Paul but was not finished

12 12 when McCartney brought the song in to be recorded on April 25, John helped with the missing pieces during the session. It was the first such instance in their relationship, and one that contributed to their eventual breakup John Lennon I Know (I Know) - Mind Games 73 A simple and brilliant little tune that reflected the ongoing problems between johnandyoko.

13 13 QUIZ BREAK #2 HERE We just heard a song from JL s Mind Games On that album John used the same guitar player that Paul McCartney used on his RAM album 2 years before name that guitarist KLOS let s hear another song featuring that same guitar play this time with Paul Paul & Linda McCartney - Another Day Also written around the Let it Be sessions, this was a similar narrative to Eleanor Rigby, again dealing with a lonely woman. This was specifically referenced in John s How Do You Sleep in the Imagine album

Fab Four Tomorrow Never Knows / Jingle Bells The Beatles - Martha My Dear - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Recorded in one take on October 4, 1968, at Trident Studios. With the exception of the strings and horns section orchestrated by George Martin that was overdubbed onto take 1, the piano-driven ballad Martha My Dear was another Paul McCartney solo

15 15 performance on the White Album. Although it takes its name from Paul s sheep dog, Martha, the song is a love song about a woman. In addition to his lead vocal, Paul plays piano and drums. Once the outside musicians left, Paul re-recorded his lead vocal part, adding handclaps at the same time. After Martha My Dear was finished McCartney turned his attention to Honey Pie, adding the line now she s hit the big time! The Beatles - If I Needed Someone - Rubber Soul (Harrison) Lead vocal: George The fourth original composition by George Harrison to be recorded by The Beatles was heavily inspired by the 12-string guitar sound of The Byrds. The introduction of George

16 16 Harrison s If I Needed Someone is strikingly similar to the introduction of The Byrds The Bells Of Rhymney. Harrison commented that the song was like a million other songs written around the D chord. The backing track was recorded in one take on October 16, George s double-tracked lead vocal and John and Paul s backing vocals were added two days later. The song was performed live by The Beatles in late 1965 and was a staple of their 1966 world tour. 17 17 Originally written in 1984, it had been shelved for years as it was considered weak (by Producer David Foster). This song is hardly weak and was given new life on this album. The Beatles - Birthday - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul with John Birthday is a song written entirely by Paul McCartney in the studio on September 18, 1968, while he waited for the other Beatles to arrive. The session that afternoon was purposely scheduled to start two hours earlier than usual so the Beatles could take a break and walk to Paul s home and watch The Girl Can t Help It, the 1956 rock and roll film starring Jayne Mansfield and featuring the likes of Little Richard, Fats Domino, the Platters, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran. The movie was having its British television premiere on the BBC that evening, and Paul lived around the corner from Abbey Road Studios, on Cavendish Avenue. The instrumental backing track included Paul on Epiphone Casino electric guitar, George Harrison on Fender Bass VI (a six-string bass guitar), John on Epiphone Casino electric guitar and Ringo on drums. By the 20th take the backing track was complete and the Beatles headed out to Paul s house to watch the movie. When they returned to the studio they worked on overdubs. In addition to Paul s scorching lead vocal, overdubs included piano, drums, lead guitar, bass guitar, tambourine (played by George with gloves on so he wouldn t get blisters), handclaps, and backing vocals. While Paul is predominantly the lead vocalist, he is joined on occasion by John. The female voices heard on the birthday refrain in the middle eight belong to Pattie Harrison and Yoko Ono. The Beatles - I Wanna Be Your Man With The Beatles Lead vocal: Ringo When Ringo Starr rejected Little Child, the song John and Paul had written for him to sing on the band s second album, they created a similar song, but one that would be easier for Ringo to sing and more in his vocal range. I Wanna Be Your Man would be Ringo s vocal contribution to the With The Beatles LP, and was often performed at Beatles concerts. The day before the song was to be recorded John and Paul were walking along Charing Cross Road in London when passing in a taxi were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Paul McCartney: They shouted from the taxi and we yelled, Hey, hey, give us a lift, give us a lift, and we bummed a lift off them. So there were the four of us sitting in a taxi and I think Mick said, Hey we re recording. Got any songs? And we said, Aaaah, yes, sure, we got one. How about Ringo s song? You could do it as a single. John and Paul were invited to the Rolling Stones rehearsal to audition their new, but still unfinished song. There Lennon told them, If you guys really like the main part of the song, we ll finish it for you right now, and within minutes, they returned with the song finished on the spot. The Rolling Stones recorded the song and it became their first big British hit, peaking at number 12. The Beatles recorded their version of I Wanna Be Your Man the next day, September 11, The Hammond organ heard faintly in the mix is played by George Martin. On U.S. album:

18 18 Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP The Beatles - Run For Your Life - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: John The first song completed when sessions for Rubber Soul began on October 12, John Lennon lifted the opening line ( I d rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man ) from Baby Let s Play House, popularized by Elvis Presley. The Beatles - In My Life - Rubber Soul Lead vocals: John with Paul Recorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his first real major piece of work. Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves -- Eleanor Rigby and In My Life. Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the entire melody on John s Mellotron. The gorgeous piano solo is provided by George Martin. To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at regular speed it would be in the correct key for the song. 20 20 George Harrison Don t Let Me Wait Too Long - Living In The Material World 73 This track was the single that should have been, almost was, but never appeared. This is a prime piece of pop songwriting, and was scheduled as the second single from the LP for release on September 24 th, It was assigned an Apple catalog number (Apple 1866), but was mysteriously cancelled at the last minute. The Beatles - I ll Be Back - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John Recorded in 16 takes on June 1, I'll Be Back was written mostly by John Lennon, and was a reworking of the chords to Del Shannon's 1961 hit Runaway. Beatles fans in America would have to wait five months to hear this exquisite Beatles song, one of Lennon finest compositions, because Capitol Records held it off their Something New album and released it on Beatles 65 in December On U.S. album: Beatles 65 - Capitol LP BREAK

22 22 BREAK Paul McCartney Wonderful Christmas Time Written on a boiling, hot day in July. This was also the first single in his catalog to be simply credited, Paul McCartney. This has become a staple of the holiday season although not as popular or as well loved as Happy Xmas (War Is Over). Even though it has been a top contender in the Worst Xmas songs it makes a great deal of money for Paul, with estimated combined royalties topping $15 Million for this one song! John & Yoko/The Plastic Ono Band Happy Xmas (War Is Over) This is one of the most popular Christmas Holiday tunes of all time. John used the basic melody from Peter, Paul & Mary s Stewball, with a terrific backing vocal from the Harlem Children s Community Choir.

23 23 Next Sunday LIVE Xmas morning w/ Cosmo Thanks you HERE The Beatles - Two Of Us - Let It Be Lead vocals: Paul and John A Paul McCartney solo composition originally entitled On Our Way Home. Thought by many to be a song about John and Paul, "Two of Us" is actually a song written by Paul about himself and his soon-to-be wife, Linda Eastman. The lyrics are derived from various experiences where the two would get in the car with Paul's dog, Martha, and just drive in the countryside until they were lost. One particular day, Linda parked the car and went for a walk with her camera and Paul sat in the car and wrote the basic tune for the song. Paul introduced the song to the other Beatles during the January 1969 sessions in which the group was working up seven or eight new songs to include in a one-hour concert television special. At this time, On Our Way Home was not the Everly Brothers-styled acoustic version heard on the released album. Both John and producer Glyn Johns suggested to Paul that an acoustic arrangement might suit the song better, but McCartney was thinking in terms of how it might play in the concert TV special, so he wanted a fast song. On January 24, after numerous run-throughs that seemed to go nowhere, John again suggested they try it with acoustic guitars, and Paul agreed. The line-up was Paul on his Martin D-28 acoustic guitar, John on acoustic guitar, George on his Fender Telecaster (playing a bass part on the top strings) and Ringo on

24 drums. The first performance with acoustic guitar featured a solo John vocal on the first verse. For the mixes submitted to Apple, Glyn Johns selected a January 24 take of the song (one without Lennon s whistling at the end of the song). One of these nonwhistling takes can be heard on the Anthology 3 album. The version found on the Let It Be was the second performance of three (numbered Takes 10, 11, 12) on January 31. This is the performance shown in the Let It Be film. John s opening dialog ( I Dig A Pygmy by Charles Hawtrey and the Deaf-aids. Phase one in which Doris gets her oats ) followed Ringo hitting his snare drum was recorded before the group played I Dig A Pony on January 21. Charles Hawtrey was a British actor and deaf-aids is British slang for hearing aids. American Beatles fans got their first glimpse of a bearded Paul McCartney and the Beatles performing Two Of Us when a clip of the song as seen in the Let It Be film was shown on The Ed Sullivan Show on March 1,
