3 The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: John Originally recorded on October 12, 1965, The Beatles decided to scrap this version and re-record the song nine days later, on October 21. George Harrison provides the sitar, the first appearance of the instrument on a Beatles recording, though the sitar can be heard in the instrumental introduction on the American version of Help! Written mainly by John with some lyrical assistance from Paul. John: I was trying to write about an affair without letting me wife know so it was very gobbledegook. I was sort of writing from my experiences, girls flats. Paul has said that the ending lyrics, so I lit a fire, refer to the house being burned down in an act of revenge by the spurned lover. 4 The Beatles - Cry Baby Cry - The Beatles Lead vocal: John Work began in the studio on John s Cry Baby Cry on July 15, 1968, with the Beatles filling four 30-minute tapes with unnumbered rehearsal takes of the song. It is estimated that the band played the song approximately 30 times. Proper recording took place on July 16. Ten takes of the basic track, consisting of John s vocal plus bass, organ, drums, and acoustic guitar, were recorded. George Martin playing the harmonium and John playing piano would be overdubbed onto the best take. During the July 16 session tensions amongst the band members flared and sound engineer Geoff Emerick quit. He would be coaxed back the next year to work at their new Apple studios and at Abbey Road Studios for the Abbey Road album. Emerick says he lost interest in the White Album because the group was arguing amongst themselves and swearing at each other. Emerick said, the expletives were really flying. / The Beatles - Can You Take Me Back - The Beatles (unlisted link track) (McCartney) (uncredited) Lead vocal: Paul On September 16, 1968, the Beatles recorded 67 takes of Paul s classic ballad I Will, with Paul on acoustic guitar, Ringo playing maracas and cymbals, and John on temple blocks, tapping out a beat with wood on metal. George Harrison was not at this session. Not all 67 takes were complete run-throughs, and as Paul was still putting the finishing touches on the song, he would drift into other songs during the numerous takes. Of particular note was take 19, which included a 2:21 untitled song with lyrics along the lines of Can you take me back where I came from, can you take me back? Twentyeight seconds of this song were used as a link between Cry Baby Cry and Good Night on Side 4 of the White Album. The song fragment is unlisted and uncredited, giving the impression it is part of Cry Baby Cry. 4

5 5 Paul & Linda McCartney Heart Of The Country RAM 71 The song has simple acoustic tune with a heavy bass chorus, and an unusually mellow sound to the acoustic guitar that was achieved by tuning all of the strings a full step lower than standard pitch. The Beatles - For You Blue - Let It Be (Harrison) Lead vocal: George Recorded on January 25, 1969, and completed in six takes. John Lennon provides the lead guitar part playing a lap steel guitar and using a shotgun shell as a slide. Paul McCartney plays piano. Nearly a year later, on January 8, 1970, George Harrison rerecorded his lead vocal to the already completed backing track. During the instrumental break he ad-libbed go Johnny go and Elmore James got nothin on this baby to give the impression he was singing live with the band. Immediately prior to the start of the song, John can be heard saying "Queen says no to pot-smoking FBI members." It is one of the few inclusions of film dialogue heard on the soundtrack LP. Written by George Harrison for his wife, Pattie, For You Blue was a straight-forward blues song. George: It's a simple 12-bar song following all the normal 12-bar principles, except that it's happy-go-lucky! For You Blue was the flip-side of the American The Long And Winding Road single, released on May 11, A new mix of take six was made in

6 for Let It Be... Naked and an alternative take from the January 25, 1969, session is included on the Anthology 3 album. The Beatles - Things We Said Today - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: Paul Written in May 1964 on board a yacht called Happy Days during Paul McCartney's holiday in the Virgin Islands with his girlfriend Jane Asher, plus Ringo Starr and his future wife Maureen. Recorded in three takes on June 2, In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine John Lennon remembered this being one of Paul s better songs. McCartney double tracked his vocals. John Lennon's piano part was meant to be omitted from the final mix, but lack of separation between instruments meant that its sound leaked into other microphones during recording. As a result it can be heard on the released version. The b-side of the UK A Hard Day s Night single. Something New - Capitol LP

7 7 The Beatles - Every Little Thing - Beatles For Sale Lead vocal: John (with Paul on the choruses) Written primarily by Paul between August 31 and September 1, 1964 in Atlantic City during days off on the Beatles North American Tour. Recorded on September 29 and 30, 1964 in nine takes. Ringo makes his debut on timpani (the orchestral drum instrument), which appears only on the final take (Take 9) of the song. Beatles VI - Capitol LP The Beatles - Eight Days A Week - Beatles For Sale Lead vocal: John Recorded primarily on October 6, It is the first instance of the Beatles taking an unfinished idea into the studio and experimenting with different approaches to a song. Eight Days A Week is the first pop song with a fade-in introduction. Written mostly by Paul, the title was taken from a line spoken by a limo driver. McCartney: I was being driven over to visit John. The chauffeur was talking away to me, saying how hard his boss worked the staff, so hard that they seem to do eight days a week. We ve altered the plot a bit for the song, of course. The bloke loves the girl eight days a week. In later years John Lennon incorrectly referred to this title in interviews as the original working title for the film Help! The actual working title of Help! was Eight Arms To Hold You. On September 20, 1964 as the band and their entourage flew to their final North American Tour concert destination, the press corps on board the Beatles private plane witnessed from a distance, careful not to interrupt, the four Beatles huddled together working on a new song. John, Paul, and George on guitars and Ringo tapping his knees, and all humming the tune of what would become Eight Days A Week. Released as a single b/w I Don t Want To Spoil The Party in the U.S. on February 15, Beatles VI - Capitol LP The Beatles - I m Only Sleeping - Revolver Lead vocal: John Written by John and Paul at Kenwood, John s estate in Weybridge, in one writing session. Recording of the backing rhythm track began at 11:30 p.m. on April 27, John recorded his lead vocal on April 29. Both the vocal and backing track were recorded at variable speed. It was during the recording of I m Only Sleeping that The Beatles discovered the backwards guitar. On May 5, 1966, as the band continued working on the song, George painstakingly transcribed the notes in his guitar solo and flourishes and then wrote them out backwards. He then played them in that reverse order. The tapes were then superimposed BACKWARDS in the mix, playing the solo notes and embellishments in the correct order, but maintaining the eerie backwards sound. I m Only Sleeping was one of three songs issued in America six weeks prior to their official release in the UK. American and Canadian Beatles fans heard I m Only

8 8 Sleeping, And Your Bird Can Sing, and Doctor Robert first on Capitol Records Yesterday And Today album, issued June 20, The rest of the world had to wait until the first week of August for them to appear on the Revolver LP. Yesterday And Today - Capitol LP The Beatles - Good Morning Good Morning - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocal: John Based on a Kellogg s Cornflakes television commercial John heard while sitting at the piano and feeling a bit stuck trying to write something for Sgt. Pepper. Paul plays a stinging guitar solo and flourishes with his right-handed Fender Esquire. The basic rhythm track was recorded on February 8, 1967 in eight takes, four of them complete. Overdubs followed with John s lead vocal and Paul s bass added on February 16. A horn section consisting of members of the Brian Epstein-managed band Sounds Inc. (previously Sounds Incorporated) was brought in on March 13. Sounds Incorporated had been one of the opening acts on the Beatles 1964 and 1965 tours. John Lennon How Do You Sleep Imagine 71 The most scathing outward song directed towards Paul McCartney. As John responded to a number of songs written on Paul s Ram LP. This was song was all about Paul, but later John said it was really about himself. George offers a blistering guitar solo. It s said that even Allen Klein contributed some lyrics towards Paul McCartney, because at the time, Paul was suing Klein and the other Beatles Paul A World Without Love Home demo `64 Peter & Gordon A World Without Love Single 1964 The Beatles - I ve Just Seen A Face - Help! Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul at the Asher family home on Wimpole Street. Paul had the tune prior to coming up with the lyrics and originally named the song Auntie Gin s Theme because

9 9 his aunt liked it. George Martin s instrumental Help! album includes an orchestrated version of I ve Just Seen A Face using the title Auntie Gin s Theme. Recorded in six takes at the same June 14, 1965 McCartney-dominated session that produced Yesterday and I m Down. 10 10 Lead vocal: Paul The second of two Paul McCartney solo performances recorded on August 20, 1968, for the White Album, the first being Mother Nature s Son. George Harrison had taken a week-long trip to Greece and on this particular day John and Ringo were in Abbey Road s Studio Three recording a very short edit piece for Yer Blues (specifically, a two, three count-in shouted by Ringo) and supervising the mono mix of Revolution 9. This left Paul alone in Studio Two to record and, in the case of Wild Honey Pie, experiment a little. Paul plays bass, electric and acoustic guitars, harpsichord, and drums. He also provides three vocal tracks. Running just 52 seconds, it is the shortest track on The Beatles. The Beatles - Why Don t We Do It In The Road? - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Excepting a drum track played by Ringo Starr and added as an overdub a day later, Why Don t We Do It In The Road? is a Paul McCartney solo performance, recorded in five takes on October 9, Playing an acoustic guitar, Paul started off each track tapping out the beat on the sounding board of his guitar. By the fifth and final take, Paul s ditty had turned into a raunchy rocker, showcasing McCartney s gritty, top-flight voice. The Anthology 3 album features a more restrained performance of the song. On October 10, while John and George were involved in Studio Two with George Martin s string overdubs for Piggies and Glass Onion, Paul invited Ringo to join him in Studio Three and lay down a drum track. Other overdubs included handclaps, additional vocals, and Paul playing his Rickenbacker bass guitar and an electric guitar part on his Epiphone Casino. Paul McCartney Flaming Pie Flaming Pie 97 The title track, it evolved out of jam between Paul and Jeff Lynne (during recording of the track, Souvenir ). It was recorded in a single session on February 27 th, The Beatles - Got To Get You Into My Life - Revolver Lead vocal: Paul Another Paul McCartney solo composition, Paul called this stand out track an ode to pot, like someone else might write an ode to chocolate or a good claret (wine). Work began on the song on April 7, 1966, and this early alternate version can be heard on the Anthology 2 album. It was the second song recorded for the Revolver album. The Beatles returned to the song the next day with an improved arrangement that included John and George on fuzz guitars. On May 18 they revisited the song again, devoting a full 12-hour session to rework and complete the song. To give the song its Motown feel, five outside musicians were brought in to add brass and saxophones. An additional dual guitar overdub was added on June 17. Got To Get You Into My Life was the opening song performed on the final Wings tour in Revolver - Capitol LP

11 11 BREAK The Beatles - Money (That s What I Want) LIVE `63 (Bradford-Gordy) Lead vocal: John Originally recorded by Barrett Strong and released as a single on Motown s Tamla and Anna labels in 1959 and 1960 respectively, peaking at #23 in It was a part of The Beatles live repertoire from 1960 to On July 18, 1963, the group, with George Martin on piano, performed the song live in the studio -- vocals and all -- for six full takes, the final take being deemed the best. The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP The Beatles - Rock and Roll Music - Beatles For Sale (Berry) Lead vocal: John Incredibly, this stunning cover version of Chuck Berry s classic hit from 1957 featuring John Lennon on lead vocal was captured in just one take on October 18, Like Twist and Shout and Money (That s What I Want) before it, Rock and Roll Music is a prime example of Lennon making a previously known hit his own. The overdubbed piano part features John, Paul and George Martin pounding the SAME piano! 12 12 The Beatles Seventeen Please Please Me sessions (McCartney-Lennon) Lead vocal: Paul Recorded February 11, A Paul McCartney original, the song was written in one day in September 1962 in the front parlor of 20 Forthlin Road, Allerton (the McCartney family from 1955 to 1964), with John Lennon helping with some of the lyrics. It was recorded under its working title, Seventeen, at the marathon recording session that produced the majority of songs for the Beatles debut album. A fan favorite, the Beatles recorded I Saw Her Standing There eleven times for BBC Radio between March 1963 and May McCartney has said that his bass line was lifted almost note for note from the obscure Chuck Berry song I m Talking About You, released by Berry in February The Beatles performed I m Talking About You at some of their club shows in 1962 and It is included on the Live! So it is a little surprising that Words of Love is the only Buddy Holly song the band officially recorded. John and Paul took extra care to make sure their harmonies were perfect, likewise George, in reverence to the material, double-tracked his careful guitar work. This recording was special to the Beatles, and it shows. Recorded on October 18, 1964 in three takes. He used a bit too much of the classic song In The Mood Featured on the Our World TV programmed on June 25, it was the first live worldwide TV program. It lasted 6 hours long, and seen in twenty Four countries by an estimatede 400 million people.

15 15 *****The Beatles - The Word - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: John Recorded in three takes at a late night session starting on November 10, 1965 that ran until 4 a.m. the next morning. Overdubs include Paul on piano, George Martin on harmonium, and Ringo playing the maracas. The song is a full collaboration between Lennon and McCartney, and began as an attempt to write a song based around a single note. Recorded initially as a heavier, up-tempo number on February 25, 1964, The Beatles attempted two takes and moved on to something else. On February 26 they struggled with the simpler, now acoustic arrangement through 12 more takes and Ringo swapping his drums for congas, ultimately leaving it to be re-made the next day. Finally, on February 27, they had the arrangement to their liking and perfected the song in two completed takes (takes 20 and 21). During their 19-day engagement at Paris s Olympia Theatre The Beatles took time out to record German-language versions for two of their biggest hits. I Want to Hold Your Hand and She Loves You were chosen to get new vocals to increase sales in the German market. This was at the insistence of EMI s German branch, Odeon, which felt they couldn t sell large quantities of records unless they were sung in German. With less than an hour left on their booked recording time, The Beatles recorded four takes of a new song by Paul, Can t Buy Me Love. Issued in the U.S. on March 16, 1964, it sold 940,225 copies in the U.S. the day it was released, earning a gold record award that day and shattering all previous sales records.. The first song performed on the live broadcast of The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, and watched by a thenrecord 72 million viewers. McCartney has said it was the first song he ever wrote where he had the words before the music. 17 17 BREAK The Beatles - Love Me Do Please Please Me (McCartney-Lennon) Lead vocal: John and Paul The Beatles first single release for EMI s Parlophone label. Released October 5, 1962, it reached #17 on the British charts. Principally written by Paul McCartney in 1958 and Recorded with three different drummers: Pete Best (June 6, 1962, EMI audition), Ringo Starr (September 4, 1962), and Andy White (September 11, 1962 with Ringo playing tambourine). The 45 rpm single lists the songwriters as Lennon-McCartney. One of several Beatles songs Paul McCartney owns with Yoko Ono. Starting with the songs recorded for their debut album on February 11, 1963, Lennon and McCartney s output was attached to their Northern Songs publishing company. Because their first single was released before John and Paul had contracted with a music publisher, EMI assigned it to their own, a company called Ardmore and Beechwood, which took the two songs Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You. Decades later McCartney and Ono were able to purchase the songs for their respective companies, MPL Communications and Lenono Music. (Ironically, this song was to be the one song which was cut out of the finished movie.) * Though "The Ed Sullivan Show" was the first TV program in America to host the Beatles, (February 9, 1964), ABC and CBS shot concert footage of the band in November 1963 as Beatlemania swept England. On December 7, 1963, "The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite" featured footage of Beatles fans at a concert, and on Friday, January 3, 1964, Jack Paar's show was the first to broadcast footage of them on a major U.S. show, when Paar played a clip of the Beatles performing "She Loves You." At that point Paar was not a fan, and he disparaged their haircuts on air.
