If you attended the December Party, we hope you enjoyed it. A big congratulations is in store for the newly elected officers of 2017! Regretfully, our wonderful Jill Wetzel had to decline her election for club secretary and we thank her for considering the position. Luckily, Talena has stepped up and volunteered to take Jill s place as club secretary. After a unanimous vote, Talena will be the 2017 secretary. Thank you for volunteering to be our newly elected Vice, ViQ Tree, we can t wait to see what fun you have in store for us in the upcoming year! As always, thank you to our returning officers, Carolyn (treasurer) and Tony (president). Your dedication to the club is what makes it such a great group to be a part of. If you are a new member and have questions, please don t hesitate to reach out to any one of us, and please don t be shy to jump in and participate in a committee or chairperson job. Sometimes taking a position is the best way to make new friends and join in the fun. We have an exciting year ahead, and I can t wait to see what s in store. You will notice that this month s newsletter is shorter than normal months. Traditionally, the January newsletter has been a postcard or a brief, but since we have so many new members I felt that a slightly longer newsletter than a postcard might be nice. I am a brand new editor this year, so I hope you enjoy the newsletter and please feel free to send me anything you may want to communicate to the club. All club dues are due in January OF EACH YEAR. If you want a hard copy of the newsletter, please add $6 to the above amount to cover the cost of printing and mailing. 2 HARD ROCK NEWS January Program: PAGE 2 This month we will be having a program about wire wrapping! There are some very skilled members in the club that are going to show us how to get started in wire wrapping our stones. Display Table for January Bring something you are proud of or bring Iron Pyrite (fools gold). Let s see those beautiful creations you have been working on or bring some iron pyrite to show. Juniors, let s see what you ve got! Monthly club raffle As usual, there will be raffle tickets sold at the entry door located where you come into the meeting. Tickets are 50 cents each. If you wish to donate something to the raffle, just bring it in and set it on the table. Raffle tickets are drawn until all items on the table are gone. Money from the raffle is used to pay our monthly rent at the church. Monthly Silent Auction There will be a silent auction at the January club meeting. There is usually one table set up for adults and another one set up for juniors. If you wish to donate something to the silent auction, please give it to Doug Leider at the meeting. JUNIORS: Please feel free to participate in the silent auction. Doug always sets out some fun stuff for the younger members of the club! Bring your quarters and start bidding. TENTATIVE FIELD TRIP SCHEDULE 2017 (weather permitting): January: None, contact Danielle Foss for info on Burke Museum, Seattle, WA. February 18th: Rice Museum, OR (van rental possible or carpool) RSVP by Feb 1st please so we can figure out seating and price on rental vehicle or carpool (dandefoss@outlook.com to RSVP or call ). Let s go see those awesome mineral specimens! March: possibly Saddle Mountain, WA (petrified wood) This could change if the mineral council field trips sound more interesting for March. June: Prineville, OR, rock show and field trips (PLAN EARLY, schedule a camping spot, contact Danielle Foss or dandefoss@outlook.com for help) Other tentative trips to be scheduled: Hansen Creek, WA (quartz crystal scepters); Teanaway River, WA (jade, jadeite, jasper); Greenwater, WA (black agate); Saddle Mountain, Mattawa, WA (petrified wood); Twin Rivers, WA (fossils in concretions, agate snails, whale bone); Money Creek, WA with mineral council when their schedule comes out (picture jasper, ore) We are going to fit these trips into the following months as we get leaders and good weather. Watch newsletters and attend meetings for more up-to-date info in the coming months. Some things to remember: 1. You must be a member of KMGS to attend and participate in field trips led by the club. 2. You must observe the rock hound code of ethics, (more info on following page). 3. Always bring the 10 essentials and be prepared for any situation or weather. 4. More specific info will be coming out in the following months about each specific trip so please stay tuned! We will let you know what tools you need to bring and where and when to meet!

"Code of Ethics" I will respect both private and public property and will do no collecting on privately owned land without permission from the owner. I will keep informed on all laws, regulations or rules governing collecting on public lands and will observe them. I will, to the best of my ability, ascertain the boundary lines of property on which I plan to collect. I will use no firearms or blasting material in collecting areas. I will cause no willful damage to property of any kind such as fences, signs, buildings, etc. I will leave all gates as found. I will build fires only in designated or safe places and will be certain they are completely extinguished before leaving the area. I will discard no burning material - matches, cigarettes, etc. I will fill all excavation holes which may be dangerous to livestock. I will not contaminate wells, creeks, or other water supplies. I will cause no willful damage to collecting material and will take home only what I can reasonably use. I will practice conservation and undertake to utilize fully and well the materials I have collected and will recycle my surplus for the pleasure and benefit of others. I will support the rockhound project H.E.L.P. (Help Eliminate Litter Please) and will leave all collecting areas devoid of litter, regardless of how found. I will cooperate with field-trip leaders and those in designated authority in all collecting areas. I will report to my club or federation officers, Bureau of Land Management or other authorities, any deposit of petrified wood or other materials on public lands which should be protected for the enjoyment of future generations for public educational and scientific purposes. I will appreciate and protect our heritage of natural resources. I will observe the "Golden Rule", will use Good Outdoor Manners and will at all times conduct myself in a manner which will add to the stature and Public Image of Rockhounds everywhere. 4 HARD ROCK NEWS PAGE 4 JUNIORS Chair report Hello Junior Rockhounds! Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year s. We will have a Junior s class during the January meeting. We will be talking about Pyrite AKA Fool s Gold. It is a mineral, iron sulfide FeS2. It is pale yellow and shiny. It is often thought to be gold at first glance. We want to be sure we are not fooled by it! Sincerely, Bobbie Sack, Kathy Reimers and Jill Wetzel, Junior s Leaders A T-Rex at the Burke Museum, Seattle! Check out the latest fossil find that arrived at the Burke Museum. Find more info at the Burke Blog: The following pictures and excerpts are from the blog: Just look at those teeth! The Burke paleontology team is preparing a portion of the lower right jaw from the million-year-old "Tufts-Love" Tyrannosaurus rex that was discovered this summer and it is an incredible fossil! Later this week, the team will carefully flip the lower jaw over to finish removing sandstone from the other side. (Hint: You can see the complete lower jaw in person at the Burke s Dino Weekend, March 11 12, 2017!) Starting with the lower jaw of the T. rex has given the paleontology team a valuable opportunity to practice on something smaller before turning their attention to several larger specimens, including the T. rex ribs and the massive skull. The relatively easy removal of the sandstone is a welcome sign for what s to come! Unlike our human jawbone, reptile jaws are made up of several bones. This 3-foot portion of the lower jaw is approximately two-thirds of the animal s total jaw, which would likely have been four-feet long. The Tufts-Love T. rex fossil was collected with permits to research and collect on federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the Hell Creek Formation. Contact Danielle Foss, field trip chair, for info on visiting the Burke Museum in Seattle, WA. Pyrite Pyrite is a Sedimentary Mineral. It is found in the following colors: gold, silver and rusty/oxidized (brown, black, red or green). Pyrite is nicknamed 'Fools Gold' because during The Gold Rush in the mid-1800s, it was mistaken for Gold. Pyrite is found in a complex of different Cuboids; they overlap, so you may see one cube with the corner or edge of another cube appearing to protrude from it. The link: Pyrite and Fossils Fossils are sometimes found preserved in Pyrite. Pyrite Fossils are preserved in immaculate detail. They weigh significantly more than normal Fossils. Sometimes a Fossil can be partly preserved in Pyrite. (Don't try to dissect your Fossils in search of Pyrite as it is unlikely you will find it!)
