1 DEEP SPACE 45-MINUTES Franz Marc s Blue Horse

2 FRANZ MARC S BLUE HORSE 1911, OIL ON CANVAS, EXPRESSIONISM WHAT YOU LL NEED: 12 x 18 white paper 12 x 15 blue paper Black oil pastel or crayon Liquid or cake tempera paints in multiple colors for background Black yarn Scissors White school glue It s hard to do a unit on color without acknowledging Franz Marc s contribution. His unique approach to painting animals from the inside out to show their soul resulted in unusual and bright colors. In 1911, Marc along with other artists formed a group called Der Blaue Reiter which means The Blue Rider in German. They set out to create paintings that expressed color in new ways. Their art style was called Expressionism. This project is a great opportunity for children to think about common color choices and why we make them. It allows for fun, movement and freedom of choice. Looking back to when I did this project with my first grade class, I can t believe how well they created their horse drawings. I think it was because they were inspired by Marc s expressive painting. 3 DRAWING BLUE HORSE You may be tempted to use the horse template found in this packet, but I encourage you to try this directed drawing with your students first. Horses are hard to draw BUT if you approach the horse as a series of basic shapes and with lots of messy lines, even the little ones will catch on. Here s what s to say: With an oil pastel or crayon draw a FLAT OVAL (almost like a rounded rectangle) in the middle of your blue paper. Did you make a mistake? Don t worry. Keep trying until you find the right shape. In front on the body, draw a letter U on an angle. The U points towards the bottom corner of the paper. Connect the U (head) with the body with two lines. Can you see the horse taking shape? Now draw two back legs. The leg in front is the most important. The leg curves back towards the tail before going down to the bottom of the paper. To finish the back leg, place your pastel inside the horses body near the back and draw a curved line towards the horses knee. Draw the bottom leg and hoof. You just drew a hind leg. It s the hardest one. Draw a similar back leg below the belly. Now draw the two front legs, the tail and any details you like. If you make a mistake in any part of the drawing or want to change the shape of a line, do it now. When you have a horse you like, cut it out. Turn it around to the clean, unmarked side and add details if you wish. DEEP SPACE SPARKLE & THE MEMBERS CLUB!3

4 EXPRESSIONIST BACKGROUND Because drawing the horse took a lot of concentration from the children, I wanted this part of the project to be a loose and process-focused as possible. We looked at a few of Marc s paintings to get an idea of the colors he used. I filled muffin-style palettes with pre-mixed paint. The lighter, pre-mixed paint colors allows the blue horse to stand out. TIP FOR OLDER STUDENTS: Instead of using pre-mixed paints, set out a palette of green, blue, yellow and red plus white and ask the children to create TINTS for the background. Otherwise, tempera paint straight out of the bottle tends to look very dark against the blue construction paper horse. DEEP SPACE SPARKLE & THE MEMBERS CLUB!4

5 ADDING DETAILS After the background has dried a bit, place cut out horse on background. I use white school glue because you will need it for adding black yarn to the tail and mane. If you don t have black yarn, it would be far more fun to use red, yellow, orange and even purple yarn to add to the horse. The kids would love the opportunity to create a colorful tail. I stuck with black as that is as far as my imagination went. After the horse and mane are glued, older children can add details to their horse or background with oil pastels. 9 I can statements for Blue Horse Today I will learn about ARTIST FRANZ MARC and the movement EXPRESSIONISM, so that I CAN create a BLUE HORSE MIXED-MEDIA COLLAGE inspired by his work. Today I will learn about LINE and SHAPE, so that I CAN use a DIRECTED LINE drawing technique for drawing a HORSE with oil pastel. I ll know I have it when my drawing takes up most of the space of the paper. Today I will learn about COLOR and VALUE, so that I CAN paint an EXPRESSIONIST inspired background for my horse using TEMPERA paint and mixing white to create TINTS. Common Core standards for Blue Horse CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events. As you read The Artist Who Painted A Blue Horse with the students, you can have students describe the different characteristics of the animals based on the illustrations. Ask them to refer specifically to the images when describing the lines, shapes, and colors that they see. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. You can apply this standard by reading through the book, The Artist Who Painted A Blue Horse to introduce students to the illustrations of Eric Carle and to abstract colors. Ask them questions as you look through the pages about the main ideas of the story, checking for comprehension. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure. Students address this standard when completing the artist statement worksheet of this packet (page 10).
