1 Drafting Technician II Position Announcement Skagit PUD is seeking a Drafting Technician II. Position will perform drafting tasks and limited engineering design to assist the District in preparing construction plans and documenting piping systems. This position reports directly to the Assistant Engineering Manager. The Drafting Technician II will: Work in cooperation with Engineering staff to draft initial and final waterline construction plans, and to prepare maps and drawings, site plans, topographic maps, GIS exhibits and right-of-way maps. Utilize District drawing standards and apply standardized drawing techniques to perform basic quantity and geometry calculations. Preparation of plan and profile drawings for waterline designs, and preparation of design drawings for waterline appurtenances such as pump stations or PRV s. Research documentation as required for the engineering staff and maintain filing system of engineering documents, including backing up and archiving. Draft and update system record maps, including master system records, valve location records, flushing record maps, and master pipe size maps. Prepare bid and construction sets as needed for District projects. Other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: High school diploma or GED is required, and college-level work in Auto- CAD, Engineering, surveying or a related field is preferred, but not required. At least four (4) years of practical experience performing utility infrastructure drafting duties using AutoCAD-based software is preferred. High degree of proficiency using AutoCAD drafting software and peripheral computer equipment. Basic knowledge of engineering design principles and construction methods. Experience in MS Office applications. Ability to exercise sound judgment in choosing scales, sheet size, views, sections and arrangement of views to provide clarity and proper emphasis in planning and executing drawings. Demonstrated knowledge of high school mathematics including trigonometry as applied to the computation of angles, areas, distances and traverses. Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing. The ability to self-start and to set achievable independent goals, in addition to the ability to multi-task effectively. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others. Non-union, non-exempt Grade 6 level position, with salary depending upon experience. Please submit: 1. 2 JOB TITLE: Drafting Technician II DATE: Feb 2015 INCUMBENT: Michael Ostergaard GRADE: 6 REPORTS TO: Assistant Engineering Manager FLSA: Non-exempt POSITION PURPOSE Reporting to the Assistant Engineering Manager, the Drafting Technician II will perform drafting tasks and some limited engineering design to assist the District in preparing construction plans and documenting piping systems. No. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 1 Work in cooperation with Engineering staff to draft initial and final waterline construction plans, which includes: Interpretation of survey data, Apply standardized drawing techniques and perform basic quantity and geometry calculations, Preparation of TINs, surface models and contours from field data Investigation of property ownership, Verification of boundaries and rights-of-way, Investigation of utility locations, Preparation of plan and profile drawings for waterline designs Preparation of detailed design drawings for waterline appurtenances such as pump stations or PRVs. Perform red-line corrections of construction plans during design process, Verification, production, and distribution of final plans, and documentation of record drawings. 2 Work in cooperation with Engineering staff to prepare maps and drawings, including site plans, topographic maps, right-of-way maps, GIS exhibits, and record drawings. 3 Creates design plans and develops initial layouts for water lines both independently and under the direction 1 % of Time EF 40 X SF
3 No. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES of an Engineering Technician or Engineer. % of Time 4 Research documentation as requested for the engineering staff and maintain the filing system of engineering documents, including backing up and archiving. 5 Draft and update system record maps, including master system records, valve location records, flushing record maps, and master pipe size maps. 7 Prepare Bid and Construction sets as needed for 5 X District projects. 7 Assist with the collection of GPS survey data for 5 X existing and proposed District infrastructure as necessary. 8 Participates in the development and upgrading of 5 X District drafting standards. 9 Assist with survey activities as assigned. 3 X 10 Other related duties as assigned. 2 X EF SF Education/Certification: High School diploma or GED, supplemented by college level course work in AutoCAD drafting. A valid driver s license. Experience: Four (4) years of practical experience performing utility infrastructure drafting duties using AutoCAD based software. Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Extensive knowledge of and a high degree of proficiency using AutoCad drafting software and peripheral computer equipment. Knowledge of design detailing practices and common drafting standards and illustration techniques. Basic knowledge of engineering principles and construction methods as applicable to a large complex water utility. Experience preparing TINs, surface models and contours. Ability to exercise sound judgment in choosing scales, sheet size, views, sections required and arrangement of views to provide clarity and proper emphasis in planning and executing drawings; Demonstrated knowledge of high school mathematics including trigonometry as applied to the computation of angles, areas, distances and traverses. Ability to read, understand and interpret engineering plans, drawings, specifications, maps and other technical material as applicable to the work. Ability to perform related engineering calculations with speed and accuracy; 2
4 Ability to perform skilled mapping, drafting or computation work in the office. Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously. Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Develop and maintain effective working relationship with District staff, consulting engineers and representatives of other agencies and others encountered in the course of work. Computer literate and welcoming of new technologies. Ability to use GIS software is desirable. Level of Decision Making & Job Complexity: Judgment is exercised in interpreting and drafting data, and in effectively managing relationships with internal and external customers. Incumbents work within a framework of established drafting standards and procedures and are expected to perform all the duties assigned to the position with minimum instruction or assistance. Work is normally reviewed only at the outset for direction and upon completion and for overall results. Number and Titles of All Persons Supervised: None.
