1 HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Essential Functions and Physical Demands Analysis Job Details Job Title: Carpenter Helper Job Code: Date of Analysis: 11/11/03 Department: Facilities Management and Operations Job Analyst: Benjamin Haynes, OTD Summary of Essential Functions The Carpenter Helper with Houston Independent School District is required to perform the following essential functions during the course of a normal workday: 1. Responsible for receiving work order from the direct Manager. 2. Responsible for surveying the work order and determining what tools/equipment are necessary to complete work. 3. Responsible for completing the work necessary for each assigned work order. 4. Responsible for completing generalized paperwork for each work order that is completed. Product /Workplace Descriptions The work of a Carpenter Helper with Houston Independent School District is performed in a school district involved primarily in the education of school-aged children and students grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The specific department in which the duties are performed is the Facilities Management and Operations (FMO) department. The FMO department is a very large department that employees many skilled craftsmen. The Carpenter Helper is responsible for receiving work orders from his/her direct Manager. The work order indicates which school in the HISD requires work and also the nature of the work. The Carpenter Helper is responsible for going out to the school and actually surveying the work, in order to determine what tools and equipment are necessary. At other times, for routine tasks and activities, the Carpenter Helper is able to gather the tools and equipment necessary without actually going to the location of the work order. The Carpenter Helper must then complete the work order as requested. This HISD - Carpenter Helper 1 9/25/2009
2 could include, but is not limited to, repairing doors, windows, holes in walls, cabinets, ramps, hand rails located beside stairs, door locks, door handles, vents, paneling, and other items made out of wood. The Carpenter Helper is responsible for completing several types of generalized paperwork, including logs that indicate the exact amount of time he/she spends at each school or office building throughout the day and also denoting what types of materials were used to complete specific work orders. The Carpenter Helper works in conjunction with the Carpenter. The Helper could be considered an understudy of the Carpenter, although the physical requirements of the job are the same. The heaviest item lifted by a Carpenter Helper is a 3 x 7 solid core door, which weighs pounds. The Carpenter Helper is required to carry this door in one of two ways: under one arm using neutral forearm rotation with a power grip or by grasping each side of the door (with the door erect, as if it were hanging) with bilateral upper extremities in neutral forearm rotation using a neutral grip. This door could be carried up 4 flights of steps, dependent upon the school and actual location of the work order. The worker is required to carry a tool pouch at all times, which can weigh pounds, dependent upon what tools are loaded in the pouch. The Carpenter Helper carries 2 x 12 pieces of lumber that are up to 16 feet long, which can weigh up to 55 pounds. The 2 x 12 boards are generally carried over the shoulder and required balance due to the length of the load. The Carpenter Helper also uses some heavy tools and pieces of equipment, which generally do not exceed 70 pounds in weight. These tools are at times lifted above the shoulder level with varying grip patterns. Other physical demands required of the Carpenter Helper vary tremendously. The Carpenter Helper is required to sustain body postures when completing work for prolonged periods of time. The worker is required to take small breaks to relieve him/herself when sustaining awkward body postures. The longest any one body posture would generally be held is minutes. These postures will be described in later sections of this report. The work of a Carpenter Helper with Houston Independent School District is performed indoors and outdoors in a school system environment. Temperature and humidity levels vary tremendously. The temperature inside of school and administrative buildings is generally ambient due to climate control. The temperature and humidity levels outside can vary from hot and humid during the summer months to cold and icy during the winter months. The ground at times can be slippery due to rain and icy conditions. The worker is required to wear safety goggles on an as needed basis in the performance of this work. Tools and equipment used in this Carpenter Helper include, but are not limited to the following: saws (hand, electric, jigsaws, and portable ban saws), socket wrenches, drills (electric and cordless), rotary hammers, and various hand tools. Regular, dependable attendance is an essential function of this position. HISD - Carpenter Helper 2 9/25/2009

Force takes into consideration the average velocity and/or acceleration of the lift and the effort necessary to overcome inertia. Other factors taken into consideration are the necessary strength to grasp and perform manipulative activities that have an associated strength factor. Upon review of this job, no peak forces were measured. Lifting Activities Note: All lifting activities cover both lifting and lowering processes. The point of origin and/or the destination of the lift are classified in the three body zone ranges. The weight ranges given are the weight of the product to be lifted or lowered and does not include the force to be employed in the lifting process.
