Inside this issue: From the Editor Correspondence Courses 3 Correspondence Courses Application Form 11 First Snow 6 From the Editor 2 Is your membership up for renewal? 4 Lily s Work 5 Wintertide designed by Patricia Andrle for Kreinik Mfg. Co., Inc. Membership Renewal Form 11 Valentines Make My Heart Swing by Homeberries. Wintertide 7 Oh Goody! 4 Riddle Answers 2, 3 Stitch an EAC Logo 10 Try a New Stitch Torocko Stitch 4 At EAC s last Board meeting in November, we were spending more than we were bringing in and the adult membership fees were increased starting January 1, The youth membership fees remain the same, but to decrease the cost of printing YEN, I have eliminated the colour where it wouldn t affect the newsletter too much, like in the headings and application forms. I hope you all still enjoy reading the newsletter. Valentines Make My Heart Swing 9 YEN Information 12 I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year. Now it s back to the regular routine and less time for stitching. If you completed any embroidery projects, send me a picture for the newsletter. I love seeing your designs and everyone else will also. In this issue, we have some lovely stitching designs: First Snow compliments of The Drawn Thread. The next issue will feature a crewel embroidery project that will be spread out over 3-4 issues. The crewel wools for each lesson will also be sent as a goody. I wish I could send you a sneak preview, but I m stitching the sample and it s not anywhere near ready for photographing. Until next time, keep your stitching fingers busy. Riddle Answers Why did the tomato blush? Deux lapins jouent aux cartes. Soudain, l'un pose ses cartes et demande? Because he saw the salad dressing! Mais qui as mangé tous les trèfles? What was the biggest island in the world before the discovery of Australia by Captain Cook? Australia was always the biggest island in the world, even before it was discovered by Europeans. Qu est-ce qu un chat bleu qui joue du jazz? Un blues cat. Quelle est al fée qu les enfants aiment le moins? Là, fait (la fée) tes (des) devoirs! CONGRATULATIONS to National member Jovana for her correct answer to this riddle. Pourquoi la tomate rougit-elle? Parce-qu'elle a eu un coup de soleil! I have streets, but no pavement. I have cities, but no buildings. I have forests, yet no trees. I have rivers, yet no water. What am I? A map! CONGRATULATIONS to National member Lily for the correct answer to this riddle. Page 2
Correspondence Courses Ever thought about taking one of the correspondence courses? They are made especially for the Youth and are only $5.00. That includes all the materials! You can also see the pictures on the website at under the Youth Webpages! Hardanger Study One Ribbon Embroidery See page 11 for the application form. Surface Stitchery Counted Thread Fall 2011 Youth Members Word Search Puzzle Answer What do you get when a cow gets stuck in an earthquake? Qu est-ce qu un oiseau sur un arbre? Page 3
Oh Goody! Included with this issue is: Pattern 3 quarter of a skein of embroidery floss in different colours I hope you enjoy the patterns, I ve been collecting them from donations to the Youth members and I now have enough to send them. One idea for the embroidery floss is to stitch a card or ornament using the Torocko Stitch on a piece of Aida that coordinates with the floss. How do you make a hot dog stand? Is your membership up for renewal? If you have a green dot on your newsletter, it s time to renew your membership! If you have a red dot on your newsletter, you are past due. This is your last newsletter until you renew. To continue receiving the Youth Embroiderers News, goodies, access to affordable correspondence courses, EAC exhibitions, Eleanor Thomas Youth Bursary, prizes, PLUS much more, please don t let your membership expire. See page 11 for the renewal form. Don t let your membership drop! Try a New Stitch...Torocko Stitch Torocko Stitch is also known as Cross Couched Filling Stitch and Hungarian Cross Stitch. Torocko Stitch is a quickly worked filling stitch. First, a foundation grid of evenly spaced long stitches is worked to cover the whole shape (Steps 1 and 2). Step 1 Step 2 This grid is then overstitched with diagonal rows of upright crosses (Step 3). Step 3 Page 4
Try a new stitch, continued... A short diagonal stitch is worked from bottom left to top right to finish (Step 4). Step 4 The cross can be worked in a second colour with a third colour used for the anchoring diagonal stitches. Torocko Stitch is most successful if worked on a closely woven ground fabric stretched in a hoop or on a frame or stretcher bars during stitching. Lily s Butterfly hi Linda This is my first project. Lily Congratulations to National member Lily for sending me this wonderful picture of her very first project. Well done, Lily! After teaching his class all about roman numerals (X = 10, IX = 9 and so on), the teacher asked his class to draw a single continuous line and turn IX into 6. The only stipulation the teacher made was that the pen could not be lifted from the paper until the line was complete. Page 5

Wintertide Designed by Patricia Andrle MATERIALS NEEDED: Silk Serica in 1116 Dark Christmas Red, 4066 Dark Holly, and 8000 Soft White OR DMC Embroidery Floss in 321 Red, 319 Very Dark Pistachio Green and White (or use DMC #5 Perle Coton in White Silk Mori (one 2.5m skein of each) in 7087 Very Dark Straw and 8000 Soft White OR DMC Embroidery Floss in 612 Lt Drab Brown and B5200 Snow White (or use DMC #8 Perle Coton in White) 9 x 9 piece of 28 count white linen INSTRUCTIONS: Stitching Tips: Moisturize fingers with a non-greasy hand cream to keep the silk from snagging on rough spots and cuticles. Use a needle large enough to accommodate the thread, otherwise fraying will occur. Let your needle hang frequently to let Silk Serica return to its natural twist. Work all the Klosters over four fabric threads using Silk Serica 8000 or DMC White. Use Serica as it comes straight from the reel, as a 3-ply twisted filament silk (do not separate into plies). Work the outside edge of the design in buttonhole stitch with Silk Serica 8000 or DMC White. Work the center poinsettia and four small corner flowers with Silk Serica 1116 or DMC 321 in satin stitch. Work the leaves surrounding the poinsettia centre flower with Silk Serica 4066 or DMC 319 in satin stitch and the vines in the corners in double running stitch. Hide all ends under the backs of the flowers. Work the diagonal long stitches over the flowers with three strands of Silk Mori 7087 or DMC 612. All diagonal stitches go in the centre hole like an eyelet. Cut the threads close to Klosters marked and remove. Work woven bars with three strands of Silk Mori 8000 or DMC B5200. Cut out around buttonholing (close to the thread, but be sure that you don t cut your stitching) and attach a small hook to one corner for hanging. Page 7
