Any ideas? Well the answer is a 1,500 robot called Pepper - who looks quite similar to Casper the Friendly Ghost, a popular children s 2: character. This robot is not your normal android because it is the first robot that has the ability to understand human feelings by looking at a person's face. Pepper is so popular that when the latest models went on sale this week - all 1,000 units or bots sold out in less than sixty seconds! 2 Pepper has been developed by Japanese telecom giant Softbank and Taiwanese technology company Hon Hai Precision Industry. The first Pepper 3: were released in June 2015 and since then all 4,000 units have sold out within seconds of being released. Softbank calls Pepper a social companion for 4: and claims that the robot is the first in the world than can respond to human emotions such as laughter, crying or shouting. 3 The next batch of Pepper bots will go on sale in January or February 2016 with Softbank promising that these new units will have an even better understanding of human 5:. The word robot was first used less than one hundred years ago - in Czech x: Karol Capek used the word in his play RUR: Rossom s Universal Robots. However he didn't invent the word, it was actually his z: the famous cubist painter Josef Capek who made up the word. The Czech word robota means to force someone to work in English. When he wrote his play Karol Capek called some of his characters robots to explain they were being forced to work!
