Assessment Student will be able to construct a detailed drawing using the elements of design, such as line, pattern, texture and shape. Students made individual works of art that combine to make a collaborative piece, and they focus on different artistic techniques or styles of artists to create a piece for the day school art auction. VA.A.1.2.4: Uses good craftsmanship in a variety of two-dimensional and threedimensional media. C. Skills Collaborate with each other to complete a handmade piece of art. D. Activities/Procedures Mmm Mmmm Good Mosaics The fourth grade students embarked on a journey of food and art as they explored the world of mosaics. The students looked at Mosaics across the world and discovered the works of Peter Rocha. Rocha is a mosaic artist who uses jelly beans to make beautiful compositions. The fourth graders were created outstanding mosaics using gumballs, jelly beans, licorice, twizzlers, m&m s, mentos, good n plenty s, mike n ike s, starburst and jelly hearts. They then helped to create the background which is made up of black licorice. The piece has been sealed for permanent viewing pleasure! There s No Place Like Home Decoupage Birdhouses The fourth graders paired up to make these clever and endearing birdhouses. They brainstormed different types of houses and the materials they could use to adorn them. Students learned about the art of decoupage as well as ready-made art. Our fourth graders were encouraged to bring in items to make these mixed media birdhouses complete and personal. The result is a wide array of places we call home! Valentina Ramos Inspired Organic Flower Composition
8 The talented fourth graders explored the works of local mixed media artist Valentina Ramos. Valentina Ramos is known for her intricate designs that reflect animals and nature in a stylistic manner. Students created flowers in various mediums using great details and organic flowing lines. This piece was composed using their watercolor explorations. Students illustrated numerous flowers in pencil on cardstock. They then outlined them in ink and completed them using watercolor. Each flower was then sealed and raised on foam board. This modern piece embodies the creative and soulful nature of our fourth graders The Giving Tree Mixed Media Wall Sculpture Our creative fourth graders made this mixed media wall sculpture. Each student sculpted a multi-layered flower and several leaves using polymer clay. The flowers and leaves were then decoupaged using recycled and ornamental papers. In addition to making this beautiful sculpture, students explored poetry and creative writing as we experimented with various forms of media. The making of this piece exemplifies our Jewish values, as the students constructed it during Tu B Shevat, the holiday that celebrates trees. The piece is displayed and mounted on reclaimed wood Butterfly Mural Fourth grade created this beautiful mural as a result of the study of George Seurat and Andy Warhol. The fourth graders had the pleasure of studying Pointillism as they explored the works of these artists. Seurat pioneered this style and was a key figure in altering the world of Modern Art. The butterfly was primarily rendered using this unique style in which tiny juxtaposed dots of multi-colored paint allow the viewer's eye to blend colors optically, rather than having the colors physically blended on the canvas. We then studied the works of Andy Warhol and made the butterfly in a pop art style. Each section was colored in bright and bold colors, exemplifying the eye catching style of this movement. The sections were then assembled onto a canvas. The piece is fitting for our fourth grade class, as it reflects the importance of the individual student as well as the collaboration of the grade as a whole For the Love of School Our fourth grade students revisited the unique artwork of Andy Goldsworthy. Goldsworthy is an earth artist who creates incredible works of art using the recycled materials he finds around him. Often times the only thing that lasts from his artwork is the documentation in the form of photography. Our students were inspired by his meticulous and creative style and decided to create hearts using recycled materials found around campus. Working in groups of two to three, students created these one of a kind pieces as they interpreted their academic studies. Over the course of a month, students thoughtfully designed these hearts with environmental awareness in mind. This piece exemplifies part of the comprehensive education offered at Temple Beth Am Day School.
9 2016/17 - Forms in Paper While learning about paper folding, fourth grade students realized that their individual work was more meaningful as part of a large collaborative piece. Working solely with white paper, scissors and glue, students created whimsical monochromatic pieces that dealt with folds, curls, fringes, spirals and weavings. Composition became important, as did overlapping and repetition. Interesting shadows became part of the work itself, when displayed as a unified piece. 2017/18 - We are all the Same Fourth grade students created unique and expressive ceramic heads based on their own selfconcepts. They learned about ancient classical Roman and Greek sculpture busts in addition to the work that modern portrait sculptors are doing today. Using the subtractive and additive methods of sculpting they created a unique collaborative work. Revised January 2018
