1 4G system for internet access in coastal areas System Presentation The purpose of NeptuLink by MVG is to satisfy the broadband IP communication needs of users on board ships and various vessels in coastal areas (fishing boats, yachts, research vessels, wind farms, coast guard & sea rescue vessels, etc.) as well as in port areas (video transmission for crane operators, etc.). i Do you know? Current solutions (HF, VHF) are either limited in terms of bandwidth (~10 kbits/s) or expensive (satellite communications). NeptuLink by MVG allows high speed connectivity to 4G networks at the same cost of mobile phone data access. NeptuLink by MVG system perspective view
2 The NeptuLink by MVG terminals connect to LTE networks (frequency bands 1, 3, 7, 8 and 20), thus allowing communications at over 10 Mbps for distances over 10 nautical miles. If the terminal is not in an area with LTE coverage, it is able to fall back on less advanced technology (UMTS and then GSM) to stay connected. The system lets you connect a PC transparently via its Ethernet connection so that it can directly access a high-bandwidth IP network. The same Ethernet connection can also be connected directly to a Wi-Fi router, which will provide access to a wireless broadband network for everyone on board. Ethernet Wifi Router IP Network These terminals were developed to be suited to the marine environment (mechanically resilient, resistant to humidity, salt spray, etc.). They also take into account the highly specific characteristics of wave propagation above sea level. Indeed, the combination of the signals, arriving directly from the base station, and in the form of a reflected signal from the surface of water, can result in signal fading at the terminal end and ultimately a loss of communication can occur. To avoid this fading phenomenon, two vertically polarized antennas are placed at the terminal end. The vertical distance between these antennas is chosen intelligently in order to minimize the signal fading over the whole frequency band. In order to maintain optimal communication, regardless of the movement of the boat on which the system is installed, the antenna radiation pattern needed to be optimized. To enable a connection, whatever the relative position of the boat and the base station, the antennas are omnidirectional in the azimuthal plane. The opening angle of the radiation pattern in the elevation plane, on the other hand, must be as small as possible to optimize the link budget, but still large enough to maintain the connection despite the pitching and rolling motions of the boat.
3 Test campaigns conducted The NeptuLink by MVG terminals were tested over three test campaigns at sea. The first two campaigns were conducted in June and December 2013 using the Images & Réseaux hub s ImaginLab LTE experimentation platform ( Using the same network, an LTE connectivity demonstration was also given for the DIRISI and the Chief of Staff of the French Navy in November Carried out by Images et Réseaux and Crystal SC, this demonstration, which implemented the LTE terminals developed by MVG installed on a French Navy tugboat ( showed sustained LTE connectivity for more than 20 nautical miles and uplink and downlink throughput at 10 nautical miles much higher than that currently accessible using a conventional terrestrial ADSL line. These tests have since been supplemented with a final campaign at sea conducted in July 2014 in the Bay of Brest using the Orange commercial network. 1/ Test campaign conducted in 2013 using the ImaginLab experimentation network Two test campaigns were conducted in June and December 2013 using the ImaginLab LTE experimentation network located in Brest. For these tests, a single base station located at the IFREMER Brest site was kept in constant communication on the network in order to avoid successive handovers which would have complicated data analysis. The base station antenna was positioned along a 220 axis, which matched our course, and at a height of approximately 50 meters above sea level. We were able to measure differences of around 30 db in received power on the different terminals (NeptuLink by MVG on the one hand and the 4G Android tablet on the other). Uplink throughput 2/ Test campaign conducted in 2014 using the Orange commercial network In July 2014, to supplement our initial tests, we conducted a measurement campaign using the Orange network in the Bay of Brest. The main results obtained during this campaign are summarized in the following figures: Cell ID Measurements from 07/15/2014 Cell ID Measurements from 07/15/2014 to 07/18/2014 In particular, these measurements demonstrate efficient handover and repeatability. Among the set of Orange LTE 2600 base stations, our systems were mainly connected to six of them.

Uplink and downlink throughput The throughput measured during this campaign varied between 10.7 Mbps and 1.2 Mbps for the uplink, and between 16.5 Mbps and 2.4 Mbps for the downlink.
