South Dakota Artists Curriculum Unit Unit of Study: Henry Rezac, painter Title of Lesson Plan: Birds of a Different Feather Living Together Grade Level: 3 5

South Dakota Content Standards Science: 3.L L L L L S.2.1 Students are able to explain how animals instinctively meet basic needs in their environment. Students are able to describe how species depend on one another and on the environment for survival. Student are able to identify behavioral and structural adaptations that allow a plant or animal to survive in a particular environment. Students are able to explain how a size of population is dependent upon the available resources within its community. Students are able to describe how interrelationships enable some organisms to survive. Students are able to explain the interrelationship of populations, resources, and environments.

Assessment Strategies Class discussion VTS observation of Henry Rezac s painting, Honkers Creation of a duck mosaic

Learning Objectives Students will learn about South Dakota artist Henry Rezac. Students will define species. Students will describe the habitat of different species of ducks in South Dakota. Students will describe how different species of ducks have adapted to the variety of climate changes in South Dakota. Students will create a duck mosaic using different colors of dried beans and corn, dried peas, etc.

Time Required One class period of minutes Materials/Technology Needed Henry Rezac painting: Honkers Paper copies of a duck outline (many images found on the Internet i.e. clip art) Variety of different colored dried beans and corn Dried peas Glue

Background Information Teachers may find the Honkers painting by Henry Rezac helpful as an introduction to explaining different species of ducks (or other waterfowl) found in South Dakota and their habitats. As students make observations about the painting, students should be able to point out that the ducks in the painting appear to be different species that live in the same (or similar habitat).

Lesson Description Show students the Henry Rezac painting, Honkers Have students make observations about what they see in the painting using VTS questioning like: What do you see? What do you hear? Where is this painting taking place? What makes you think that? What do you notice about the birds in the painting? After a discussion about the painting, ask students to explain what they already know about ducks and keep track of the comments by creating a list on the board (to be used throughout the unit on ducks or other waterfowl native to South Dakota).

Lesson Description continued Hopefully, some of the students noticed that the painting had a variety of different looking ducks. As a beginning to this unit, you could explain to students that one way to tell species of birds/animals apart is by their appearance. Pass out a paper copy with the outline of a duck on it (generic image). Tell students that they will be creating their own species of duck by creating a mosaic of what their duck would look like. They will do this by gluing different colors and shapes of dried beans, corn, and peas to their paper. They may want to think about a particular color pattern or a random pattern. After students have created their duck mosaics, let them dry thoroughly and display them around the room as your unit on birds and habitat continues.

Enrichment Students could write a paragraph about their duck providing a name for the species of their duck, where they live, what they eat, describe their habitat, etc. For older students this lesson could be adapted to incorporate how habitats have changed due to growing human population needs, the interrelationships between humans and animals, etc.
