2 OWNERS MICHAEL E. HEISLEY, SR. Chief Executive Officer Michael Heisley, Chief Executive Officer of The Heico Companies L.L.C., purchased the Grizzlies on April 11, 2000 from John McCaw after initially coming to an agreement in January of that year. The purchase of the Grizzlies allowed him to achieve a dream, as Heisley is a lifelong basketball fan. His most significant contribution to the Memphis Grizzlies since buying the team was on April 30, 2002, when he announced he had hired Jerry West as the team s President of Basketball Operations. West is regarded as one of the top basketball executives in the NBA. That single event showed both Grizzlies fans and the entire league that Heisley is serious about making the Grizzlies a premier franchise in the NBA. West rewarded his confidence in the season by creating a team that won 50 games on the way to earning the first playoff berth in franchise history, and again qualifying for the playoffs in the season. But no matter how good a team is on the court, it must have the backing of fans and the community. Heisley recognizes this, and has made strides to establish the Grizzlies as a leader in community involvement. Heisley has taken the lead on numerous large community initiatives, including spearheading an amazing $5 million donation from the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation to the St. Jude Children s Research Hospital to build Memphis Grizzlies house, a hospice for the families of St. Jude patients. The Foundation has also made separate $1 million donations to Bridges, an organization that serves to bridge cultural, social, economic and geographic gaps among the youth of the community, and Memphis Athletic Ministries, who built a state-of-the-art athletic facility that houses the development of grassroots basketball throughout Memphis. Furthermore the Charitable Foundation helped found Grizzlies Academy, a break the mold school, which opened in But those are just the tip of the iceberg. The Charitable Foundation has donated over $16 million to local charities, setting the standard for charitable giving in professional sports. Of course, the biggest project Heisley has embarked on in Memphis is building FedExForum, a state-of-the-art arena for the Grizzlies. The arena, the largest public works project in the history of the city of Memphis, was completed in September 2004 on time and on budget, and has set a new standard for NBA arenas. Fans flocked to FedExForum in its inaugural season, setting a franchise record with 18 sellouts, more than the first three seasons in Memphis combined. Heisley s commitment to the community has been a thank you to Memphis for welcoming him and the team with open arms when he decided to relocate the franchise from Vancouver in the summer of Prior to deciding on Memphis as his destination, Heisley embarked on a cross-country odyssey to find a new home for his Grizzlies. Upon arriving in Memphis, he knew he d found that home. Buoyed by impressive corporate and community support, Heisley successfully brought the NBA to Memphis. Away from the court, Heico Acquisitions Inc., a key subsidiary of The Heico Companies, acts as an investment firm, specializing in buying interests in under-performing companies and turning them around. Heico holds interests in approximately 40 businesses worldwide within a diverse set of industries, including steel wire products, pre-engineered metal buildings, heavy equipment, telecommunications, plastics, food production and material handling equipment. The 40 businesses owned by Heico and its subsidiaries have over $2.5 billion in revenue and employ approximately 15,000 people in varying capacities in the United States and internationally. Michael Heisley was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. He holds a BA from Georgetown University, where he currently serves on the Board of Directors. He also serves on the Board of Directors of several portfolio companies along with the Heisley Family Foundation. Heisley resides in St. Charles, Illinois with wife Agnes. They have five children. 56

3 PITT HYDE OWNERS OWNERSHIP Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Hyde received a bachelor s degree in economics from the University of North Carolina in 1965 and later that year joined Malone and Hyde, Inc., the wholesale food company founded by his grandfather in 1907, and initiated and developed Malone and Hyde s specialty retailing division. He was the first president of Super D Drugs, and in 1968 was elected president of Malone and Hyde. In 1972, he assumed the additional role of chairman, the position he held until 1988 when Malone & Hyde was sold to Fleming Companies. Under Hyde, the company became the nation s third largest wholesale food distributor with annual sales of over $3 billion. In 1979, he founded Memphis-based AutoZone, the retail auto parts chain, as a division of Malone & Hyde. In 1987, AutoZone was spun off as a free standing company. He served as chairman and CEO until 1996, when he passed on his CEO title. In March of 1997, Hyde retired from active management of AutoZone, but remains on the board of directors. Today, AutoZone, the country s largest auto parts chain, has 3,200 stores in 48 states. Presently, he is the owner and president of Pittco Holdings, Inc. One major focus of his broad portfolio of investments is Schaedle Worhtington Hyde Properties, LP, a real estate company based in Atlanta specializing in the development of multi-family housing and limited service hotels. Hyde serves as a director for FedEx Corporation, and is actively engaged in the creation of a biotech research park for Memphis. He is married to the former Barbara Rosser, and the couple has five children. He supports numerous Memphis-based educational, cultural and charitable organizations and is past chairman of Memphis Tomorrow. barbara rosser hyde Barbara Hyde was awarded a Morehead scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and following graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and religion, she taught secondary school in Kenya. Upon her return to the United States, she served as development officer at UNC for eight years and then as executive director of the university s Arts and Sciences Foundation and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1988 to She has made Memphis her home since 1992, serving as president of the J.R. Hyde III Family Foundation and as a director of the J.R. Hyde Senior Foundation In addition to her foundation responsibilities, she is active in a number of cultural and civic organizations in the city of Memphis. She served as founding chair of the Women s Foundation for Greater Memphis and remains an active member of that board. She co-founded EdPac, a grassroots political action committee designed to impact change in the local public shcool system. She serves on the boards of The Leadership Academy, Ballet Memphis, St. Mary s Episcopal School, The Memphis College of Art and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. She is also involved with the National Civil Rights Museum. Hyde and her husband have five children. 57

4 OWNERS fred jones Fred Jones Jr. is recognized as one of Memphis premier event organizers, having created some of the most popular traditions in the city. He is the president of SMC Entertainment, a division of Summitt Management Corporation. Founded in 1986, SMC is an entertainment production, promotion, and event management company. Jones is the founder and producer of the Southern Heritage Classic presented by FedEx. Since 1990, this annual event of football, music and fun is one of the Memphis metropolitan area s highest-attended events. The football game features Jackson State University and Tennessee State University. He also has helped to bring to Memphis hundreds of concerts, working with artists such as Prince, Usher, Bill Cosby, Count Basie, The Commodores and The O Jays from the 70s through today. In addition to a number of national festivals, Jones was also a national tour manager for The Isley Brothers and a part of Isaac Hayes national and international tours during the heyday of Shaft. He also was a leading figure in returning live entertainment to The Orpheum Theatre helping to ensure its survival as a venue. His success has brought him numerous awards, and in 2004 he was named one of the 50 Most Influential African- Americans in Tennessee by Business Tennessee magazine. His other honors include the 2005 Entrepreneur of the Year from the National Alliance of Market Developers (NAMD); 2004 Kate Gooch Award for Service to the Community from Leadership Memphis; induction in 2002 into Alumni Hall of Fame for Memphis City Schools; the 2002 Award of Excellence from the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund; the 2001 Dr. R. Q. Venson Pioneer Award from the Memphis Kemet Jubilee, Inc.; and the 2000 Outstanding Community Sales Award from the Sales and Marketing Executives of Memphis. Jones graduated from Memphis State University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He plays hard and works harder. Few days go by that he doesn t squeeze in a game of golf and if there s a TV in the room, his eye will inevitably wander to a game or the scores. Yet, he continues to make great use of his business degree. He is by any account a successful producer and businessman, and his Southern Heritage Classic and stake in the Memphis Grizzlies have definitely put him at the top of the game. Jones and his wife, Carolyn, are both native Memphians. 58

5 STALEY CATES OWNERS OWNERSHIP Staley Cates is President of Southeastern Asset Management, based in Memphis. Southeastern manages equities for endowment, foundation and pension accounts and is the advisor to the Longleaf Partners mutual fund family. Born and raised in Memphis, Cates attended the University of Texas in Austin and earned a Bachelors of Business Administration. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and has been with Southeastern since Cates and his wife Elizabeth have two children. He is the Co-Founder of New Hope Christian Academy, and serves on the Boards of the Urban Youth Initiative, Soulsville, The National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis Athletic Ministries, Partners in Public Education and America s Promise. Andy Cates Andy Cates is the Managing Member of Value Acquisition Fund, a Delaware Limited Liability Company based in Memphis, Tennessee. Value Acquisition Fund acquires and manages assets or businesses that are in need of capital, repositioning and/or redevelopment. It is focused primarily on commercial real estate assets in the southern and southwestern United States. Prior to creating Value Acquisition Fund, Cates was a founding partner of Viceroy Investments based in Dallas, Texas. Cates continues to be affiliated with Viceroy and is a partner in three existing Viceroy partnerships. In 1999, Andy relocated to his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee to develop the Soulsville Revitalization Project. This $20 Million nonprofit project, which includes The Stax Museum of American Soul Music and The Stax Music Academy, serves as an anchor for what is now one of the largest inner city revitalization projects in the United States. A native Memphian, Cates earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (Finance) degree at the University of Texas. He and his wife Allison have two children. Cates serves on the boards of Soulsville, Grizzlies Academy, and Calvary Street Ministries, and is President of Hope & Healing Housing. 59
