3 Letter From The Prez KBS President Mark Sneed Good Afternoon Blues fans, I hope you ve been able to get out to see some live blues this month. I saw the North Mississippi Allstars and was able to make it to the Kentucky Homefront Blues show. The featured acts were John Boy Slim & Mike Hood, Jeremy Short, The Beat Daddys, and last but not least, the Boscoe France Band. I liked both shows and thought the music was great and so were the venues. I had never been to the Clifton Center before and the acoustics were great. It s a nice place to go and I ll make it back there again, when a show coming up catches my eye. In May, we have our first outdoor event coming up. It is the BBQ, Blues and Bikes festival in Elizabethtown, KY. It s a short ride down the highway and worth the trip. I ve been to the ones in the past and they set up two stages within walking distance from each other. The bands are scheduled to play at different times so you don t have to choose which bands to hear. The last two years the weather has been nice and there were a lot of bikes to look at while the music played. The various KBS committees have been busy planning the rest of the year. The Band and Solo/Duo contests are being finalized. We have some new merchandise scheduled to come out and it will be at our KBS tent at the upcoming shows. We are still searching for a new T-Shirt design, and please let us know what other merchandise you would like us to introduce. I hope to see you around in the coming months. Mark 3

4 Bonnie Raitt Dig In Deep Tour Louisville Palace March 19, 2016 I had the pleasure of seeing Bonnie Raitt in concert for the second time on the above date. The first time I saw her was also at the Palace while she was on her Bon-Taj tour with Taj Mahal. My wife and I were so impressed with that show we had to see Bonnie again. Opening for Bonnie on this night was a group called California Honey Drops. This group was originally formed and played at subway stations in Oakland. The five piece band included a dynamic vocalist named Lech Wierzynkski who also played guitar and trumpet, as well as a drummer, saxophonist, bassist and keyboard player. Their songs were a throwback to Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and others in what they call Organic Music. They were entertaining and it appeared that everybody liked them, but it was hard for them to break into the anticipation that the audience had for Bonnie Raitt. Bonnie and her band took the stage and immediately took the crowd. The Palace was packed with her fans, many of whom knew her songs going all the way back to the 1970 s. Some of her friends and relatives were in the audience as she told stories of trying to get Patti Hurst to sing on a 1975 album but, as Patti was already wanted by the law, her record company wouldn t allow it. On one song, she prefaced the start by saying that I hope that I can remember how to play this song.i bet you do too! Band members need to be mentioned here too. Her bassist, James Hutchinson, has been with her since George Marinelli played excellent guitar, Ricky Fataar played drums, and her keyboardist was none other than Mike Finnigan. On one song, Finnigan took the lead while Bonnie stood to the side and listened. A great rendition of B.B. King s Don t Answer the Door, he belted out the vocals telling his woman that he did not want anyone else coming around to his place. It s not often that the star of a show lets one of her/his band members take over like that. It was very generous of her. Raitt played several songs from her new CD entitled Dig In Deep including Need You Tonight (my favorite), Gypsy in Me, I Knew, Undone, Shakin Shakin Shakes, and The Comin Round is Going Through. The latter part of her show were some older songs that are fan favorites such as Love Letter, Thing Called Love, and of course, her encore starter, I Can t Make You Love Me. In a spontaneous move, she changed the set list by adding a song that she felt like doing based on her mood, the mood of the crowd, and the previous song. She called to one of the stage hands and told him to bring me the brown Strat so she could play that song. All three guitarists (bass included) changed instruments multiple times. Bonnie did two songs at the keyboard to show Mike Finnagin a thing or two. Her signature slide guitar was ever present except for the couple of acoustic guitar songs she played. At 66 years old, Raitt still has the playing ability, voice and charisma to keep the audience entertained. Several times during the show, people shouted out I love you, Bonnie! In the upper balcony where I was, probably 10 people got up and danced during some of the songs, which, between their seat and the one in front of them, was no small feat. For myself and all of her faithful followers, I hope she returns soon. Bob Brown 4

5 From Minglewood to Cyberspace Twenty odd years ago the title for this column seemed to be unique and appropriate. Cyberspace had a futuristic tone to it that emphasized the ubiquity of the Blues. However, now, that seems obvious. You can access almost any Blues artist on YouTube or ITunes or Amazon Prime. It is cyberspace that has become ubiquitous. So, this will be the last MWCS; I am changing the title of this column to the name of a radio program I did some thirty odd years ago: Back To The Blues. I think that this is appropriate for any number of reasons, but for one primary one: we have an obligation to not lose sight of the Blues in its origins and those first several generations of development. This is not me getting on my curmudgeon soapbox well, maybe it is a little bit; but, more, this is about a loss of perspective on the Blues. And, with this column in its new iteration, I am going to try to provide a refocusing on what Fred McDowell called the straight and natural Blues. Perry Aberli In my last column I touched on the Midwest Blues Festival, discussing Bob Koester s role as both a mentor and an encourager. This time I would like to talk about two other significant supporters: Bruce Iglauer and Dick Waterman. Most people know the story of Bruce and Alligator Records; however, not as many remember the significance of Dick Waterman a masterful photographer, agent, travel companion, and discoverer of Blues talent. Dick along with Nick Perls (founder of Yazoo Records) and Phil Spiro rediscovered Son House. Dick would assume the role of manager for Son as well as many other Bluesman in particular Mississippi Fred McDowell and Shirley Griffith. During these early years Dick also has as his employee a young Bonnie Raitt. In 1971, after a year of Blues Festivals had begun to sprout in the Midwest, I approached the Cultural Arts Commission at Notre Dame and made a pitch for a Blues Festival. There had been a weekend of Blues performances the year before featuring Fred, Lightnin Hopkins, and JB Hutto, among others, and I thought that it was time to have a full blown Festival. My proposal for a three day festival was surprisingly accepted and I was given a budget of $10,000. The first call that I made was to Dick Waterman who had booked Fred, JB, and Lightnin the year before as well as stand alone concerts by Son House and Robert Pete Williams at Notre Dame. I laid out my vision of a three day festival which each day opening with a country or acoustic act, a middle act of some repute, and a major Chicago Blues act to close. After some back and forth with some must haves on my part (Fred McDowell, Howlin Wolf, Muddy, Jr. Wells and Buddy Guy, and Jimmy Rogers) and some need to haves (Shirley Griffith, Little Brother Montgomery, and Mance Lipscomb) we came up with a three day lineup that came in at $10,000 in talent costs. Since we were all volunteers, and I arranged a sound system for free from some local friends, we were able to pull it off. We had minimal advertising (mostly posters), and the school s weekly student magazine (The Scholastic) as a program. We used a venue on campus, a geodesic dome called Stepan Center, and had another friend do the silkscreening for t-shirts the volunteers provided. It was a true labor of love. We ended up with an iconic program of Blues that still stands up as a Blues lover s dream as you can see from the poster at right. On Friday night we had: Fred McDowell, Homesick James with Carey Bell and Eddie Taylor, Howlin Wolf (with Sunnyland Slim filling in for Detroit Jr.). Saturday s lineup was: Shirley Griffith, Little Brother Montgomery (Sippie Wallace was unable to perform), Otis Rush, and Muddy Waters. Sunday featured: Mance Lipscomb, Buddy Guy and Jr. Wells doing both an acoustic and electric set, and Jimmy Rogers and Johnny Littlejohn with the Bob Riedy Blues Band. Little did I know at this time that the Midwest Blues was not to be a one time event, but would last for almost a decade and be the inspiration for Blues Clubs and concerts throughout the Michiana area. It was my dream event. Next time: Bruce Iglauer and the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Perry W. Aberli 5

8 National Blues Museum A Review by Marjorie Marshall, Vice Chair, Soulful Sounds of Derbytown, LLC Secretary, Kentucky Heritage Music Foundation (501(c)3) On Saturday, April 2, 2016, I, along with Robert "Butch" Williams, president and founder of the Kentucky Heritage Music foundation 501 C3 LLC, traveled to the national blues Museum located at 615 Washington Ave. in downtown St. Louis Missouri. To say that the facility is amazing is an understatement. Even awesome does not describe the breathtaking experience one receives when you enter into what I'm sure will be a spiritual encounter for music lovers in particular, and anyone else who decides to take this one of a kind adventure. The history alone will leave you wanting more, and the interactive mediums let you have so much fun it's hard to leave! On top of all the eye candy and memorabilia, there is a concert venue where live entertainment goes on, nonstop, during the entire journey. The phenomenal undertaking accomplished by the founders of this organization is to be commended on many levels. Overall, the honor it pays to the pioneers and originators of the blues will become legendary, not only by the example it sets, but by the causes it affects and the legends it produces. I can't wait to return and take a whole lot more people with me. The KBS is contemplating a bus tour ASAP to the venue. We would like to fill a bus or two for the ride. According to interest level and participation, a package deal may run approximately $175-$200 per person, double occupancy, for a one night overnight stay, or around $75 per person down and back. We will have more information coming soon! Mayor Francis Slay, NBM Executive Director Dion Brown, and Bobby Rush with the proclamation that declares April 1, 2016 as National Blues Museum Day. 9 New Music Reviews Sonny Moorman You Made All My Blues Come True Atlas Records This is the latest acoustic recording from Cincinnati-based bluesman Sonny Moorman. Recorded at Atlas Records in Macon, GA, the CD contains ten songs, two of which appear to be written by Mr. Moorman. The other songs include covers of Taj Mahal, Chuck Berry, Tony Joe White and Willie Dixon. Songs you will probably recognize are Memphis, Maybelline, Polk Salad Annie, Ramblin On My Mind, and Big Boss Man. The CD is very enjoyable and well-produced by Mr. Moorman. The covers are not strict copies of the originals, but rather Mr. Moorman s interpretations of the original recordings. Each song is very nice. My only complaint is that every song has a tambourine used as the percussion section. Used over the entire recording, it gets to be a bit monotonous for me. Ray Current Knickerbocker All Stars Go Back Home To The Blues Knickerbocker All Stars This CD is a group effort from some of the blues talent in the New England area. The all stars consist of original Roomful of Blues members and other Roomful alumni, members of the Duke Robillard Band, and other area blues musicians. The songs are characteristic of the ones played in the heyday of the Knickerbocker. The recording is sponsored by the Knickerbocker Music Center, a notfor-profit entity. The very first song had this listener running to the closet to find his Zoot Suit until my wife reminded me that I did not own one. The music is big band blues that has apparently been featured at the club for years. The songs are all very nice and most are swing or jump blues. If you enjoy big band music, you will enjoy this recording. One of the singers reminds me of Bobby Bland, who I have always enjoyed hearing. The whole CD had me tapping my feet and wishing I could dance. So, if you like Bobby Bland, Roomful of Blues, big band music, a very good brass section or just good blues, you should give this CD a try. Ray Current 9
