SurvCE: configuration of S9III/S8 for a UHF radio connection This tutorial will show the basic settings of a S9III/S8 as a base, transmitting with its internal radio or with a generic external radio, and as a rover with internal radio. 1. Bluetooth connection between PDA and receiver From the main menu, select Equip GPS Base Current, verify that the correct model S9 III GNSS or S8 GNSS is selected, otherwise select it. Then move in submenu Comms, verify that, in the Device box, there is the serial number of your receiver: if so go to step 1B. 1
1A. Otherwise, open the box and search between the devices stored; if there is not, click on the icon with hammer and wrench, then click Find Receiver; the handheld device will search all nearby Bluetooth devices. Then select the correct serial number, click on green button with white check sign to confirm, then click the blue icon (with BT symbol) to start the connection. 2
1B. Once back on the page Comms and verified that the serial of the device is correct, click the middle icon (with a receiver and a plug) at the top to complete the Bluetooth connection. If the message "Successful Connection" appears, the connection between the handheld and the receiver is complete. 2. Operating a base transmitting with the built-in radio If your S9III included the internal radio, in RTK menu you can select Internal UHF as Device, then click on the icon for enter into the radio configuration page. Here you can select one of the 8 channels and read their default frequencies, in case you set a channel with a new frequency, you can also modify 3
the radio protocol and the channel spacing. Then confirm with green button: you will see the message Device configured. Then you have to select the format to broadcast in Message Type textbox: you can choose among CMR, CMR+, RTCM 2.3, RTCM 3.0, please remember that CMR+ and RTCM3.0 contains also Glonass corrections. Click again on the icon, now software asks you which coordinates are referred to the base position. It can be a known position or a new position. In the first case you can specify if the position comes from a point already stored into the active project ( Previously Surveyed Point ), if user have to insert the local coordinates ( Use Local Coordinates ) or if the position are taken from a base position saved file ( Read From File ). In the second case you must calculate the new position: you can use an approximate positioning from an average of raw GPS measurements ( Read from GPS ), write the exact geographical WGS84 coordinates ( Enter Lat/Lon ) or insert the exact local coordinates ( Enter Grid System Coordinates ). Choose the proper option based on your kind of survey: consider that in a new job you have to select a new position. In the tutorial we shows in the following the most common option, that is user already knows the base coordinates into a local projection: if you have selected a local projection in the Job Settings menu, now you have to select Enter Grid System Coordinates in the Base Configuration menu. 4
A new page is opened: you have to insert the Northing, Easting and Elevation coordinates. If a geoid file has been loaded into the software, you have the possibility of inserting an ellipsoidal height or an orthometric height, on the contrary you can only insert an ellipsoidal height. If you reference system is valid all over the world, you have also to specify the hemisphere and the fuse (in the example below UTM-WGS84 is used). For loading a geoid model into the software follow the instruction at point 2A, otherwise go directly at point 2B. 5
2A. you have the possibility to download from Carlson website a database of geoid models ( CarlsonGeoidGrids.exe ) and calculate a grid for your country with the tool SurvCOM.exe. After obtained the grid (a.gsf file) by yourself or from Stonex technical support, you have to copy that file on your controller in the folder Program files SurvCE Data, then you have to open SurvCE and follow the menu Equipment Localization GPS Geoid File, you will find in the folder where you can select the model. 2.B The program converts the inserted local position into WGS-84 global coordinates and advises you in case the position calculated from GPS observations is very different from the position given by you (more than 5 sec, about 150 m in Italy). In this case please check your local coordinates and repeat the base configuration, on the contrary if there is no error the software asks you to confirm this position. In this page you have also the possibility of giving an index to your base in the box Broadcast ID : this opportunity is useful in case of using two or more bases at the same time. Click on Yes, finally the program asks you if you want to store your base coordinates into a file ( Save Settings to File ). 6
Storing the coordinates of the base into a file can be very useful in case the survey must be stopped and restarted later from the same position, in this way you can reload from the stored file the same coordinates and continue the same job. After this question the entire procedure of initializing the base is concluded and you can proceed with the rover setting. The second common option of base coordinates is that user is on a completely unknown point and have to collect an average of raw measurements: select Read from GPS in the Base Configuration menu. A new page is opened, where user can choose the length of average in minutes or the number of observations to be collected, after the selection click on. Software starts to collect the observations and user can see the number of 7
satellites and the predicted accuracy. After this, software shows you the average coordinates and you can proceed in the same way as did before. 3. Operating a base transmitting with an external radio If your S9III/S8 is a model without internal radio or in any case you need to use an external radio for a more powerful transmission, you can repeat the same procedure already explained in the previous chapter except for the setting in GPS base RTK menu, where you have to select in Device box Cable or Generic Device, then you have to select the correct baud-rate of the radio in Baud textbox: for example if you are using the older Stonex GDL radio (GDL 2, GDL 5 or 8
GDL 20) select 19,200 bps, for Pacific Crest radio (PDL, ADL Vantage or ADL Vantage Pro) select 9,600 bps. (If you need further information about setting of the external radio, please refer to the tutorial Using S9 series with ADL radio ). Then you have to choose the format of the information in Message Type textbox, as you also did with internal radio: you can choose among CMR, CMR+, RTCM 2.3, RTCM 3.0, please remember that CMR+ and RTCM3.0 contains also Glonass corrections. Then click on the icon procedure of inserting the base coordinates. and continue the 4. Operating a rover with the built-in radio Since S9III and S8 contains the same radio module, it is possible without problem connect a S9III base with a S8 rover and vice versa. Now the rover receiver can be switched on, attached the radio antenna for the correct frequency range, then start the software, enter into the menu GPS rover and establish a Bluetooth connection in the same way as you did for the base receiver. Then go into RTK menu and select Internal UHF in the Device textbox, then click on the near icon for configuring this device: you have to select the same radio channel used by the transmitting base radio. 9
Click on the icon and you will return to RTK submenu. If there is no problem the message Device configured appears and you will start to see the uhf led blinking, since the corrections are arriving. Then you should select the correct format in Message Type textbox, even if S9III/S8 rover can set itself automatically on the base format. You could also specify the index of the base to use in the textbox Base ID, on the contrary select the box Use any Base ID. After a connection is established, you can proceed with the survey, see next chapter for understanding how to observe the rover position accuracy. 10
5. Check of the effectiveness of corrections After the message "Successful Connection", wait for few seconds, then from the menu Survey Store Points, you can verify the correct working of rover, by checking the coordinates (N, E, Z), the number of satellites used, the status of the correction (DGPS, FLOAT or FIXED), the estimated accuracy (HSIG/VSIG or HSDV/VSDV depending on software version). By clicking on the icon at the right top angle of the screen (that with a satellite and a binocular inside), you can access to the Quality menu, where you can see if you are getting a correction (in our case it is a FLOAT state correction, with 1 sec of latency and 6 satellites used). Moving to the menu Ref, you can see the data regarding the base station, in this case at a distance of 3 meters. 11
In the table below we summarized the meaning of different correction level: Name Typical accuracy Observation used DGPS 0,5 1 m L1 L2 code Float 5-30 cm L1 L2 phase Fixed 1-3 cm L1 L2 phase For any problem, please contact our Stonex agent/dealer or write an to support@stonex.it. 12
