4 4 2. A designer-maker wants to batch produce a range of cushion covers made from natural fibre. The cushions will be sold in a craft shop. 2a) (i) Name one suitable fibre for the cushion. (1 mark) (ii) Explain one method suitable for producing a design on the cushion cover. (iii) Draw a design on the cushion cover below using the method you have chosen.

(1 mark) (ii) Explain the method of attaching the fastening. 2c) During the manufacture of the cushions quality is monitored. (i) Give two critical control points in the manufacture of the cushions where quality is monitored. (ii) Explain how quality is monitored at each critical control point you have identified. An accessories manufacturer is designing a backpack to be used by teenagers on a day trip to France. 3a) Two specification criteria for the backpack are: It must be easy to carry It must have pockets for small items Give two more specification criteria for the backpack.

6 6 3b) A Ripstop nylon fabric is often used for backpacks. Give two reasons why this fabric is suitable for backpacks. 3c) A prototype of the backpack will be made. Explain the purpose of a prototype. 3d) The backpack will have a logo printed on the front flap. Explain the benefits of using CAD/CAM for printing the logo. (5 marks) (Total 12 marks) 4. Knitted fabric is used for a wide range of clothing products. 4a) (i) Describe three properties of weft knitted fabrics that make them suitable for jumpers. 3.

8 8 4b) Modern computerised knitting machines are used for manufacturing jumpers. Describe three benefits to the manufacturer of using computer numerically controlled (CNC) knitting machines. 3. (6 marks) 4c) The manufacturer needs to take account of the needs and wants of consumers in order to produce jumpers that people will buy.
