4 Workshop Descriptions Key Speakers Silas Lusias Silas is a community organizer, social entrepreneur and permaculture gardener from Zimbabwe, currently living in Germany. Concerned about how life is and how it could be, Silas believes life is a practice, therefore continuous practice and being curious makes it more interesting to be living. His workshop will be based on the story of an Eco-Village he founded in Zimbabwe, which brought change to the country. The theme of the workshop is from scarcity to abundance, emphasizing the importance of community. Hamed Abbaspur Hamed is a lecturer on Sustainable Development, Global Learning and Intercultural Communication through his initiative, G&N Sustain Life. In his workshop, participants will have the opportunity to analyze global economic, ecological and social conditions as well as their interactions with each other from diverse perspectives. Participants will work together to find solutions to global challenges such as poverty, hunger, inequality, corruption, violence and migration. The importance of the protection of life, species and environment will be discussed, alongside the necessity for transparency and democracy in order to create a just, equal, inclusive and peaceful society. Simon Johnson Simon is Co-director of the games company Free Ice Cream. Free Ice Cream uses games, play and agency as a means to help people understand complex subjects. So far this has included games such as the award-winning 2030 Hive Mind game. Commissioned by the ODI and UNDP, 2030 Hive Mind is a real-time policy simulation game that helps people understand the complex way different policies affect the Sustainable Development Goals. Through his workshop session, participants will the opportunity to play the SDG policy game, 2030 Hive Mind.
5 Workshop Descriptions Key Speakers Irene Muller Irene is a graduate of the Kiel School of Sustainability and is currently working on the mobility energy transition at the Institute for Transformative Sustainability Research in Potsdam, searching for the conditions that need to be met to make mobility environmentally friendly and CO2-free. Studies in wealthy liberal market democracies have shown that in more equal societies people live longer and have less psychic disorders, there are less homicides and suicides and the general level of trust in other people is higher. In her workshop, participants will engage in an experiment, discuss studies and their implications, as well as what social sustainability could be and what affects economic equality has on societies. If time allows, participants will go for a walk to take pictures of visual hints of status inequality, and discuss them so if available, bring a camera! Jens Rosenthal Jens is a lawyer working at the Planungsbüro für urbane Transformation (Office for Planning and Urban Transformation) at Alte Mu in Kiel. The mindfulness practice developed by Zen teacher and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh has become an important part of his life because it is open and non-dogmatic and can easily be applied to everyday activities in the form of mindful walking, eating, speaking, listening, and working, as well as other aspects of daily life. To him, mindfulness and meditation are more than just relaxation techniques; he combines these practices with his work and the social projects he is involved in, such as Netzwerk achtsame Wirtschaft (Network for a Mindful Economy). Jens workshop will give participants the chance to focus on the present moment through sitting and walking meditation, reading an introductory text by Thich Nhat Hanh and reflecting on how humankind might use mindfulness practice for our own benefit and as part of work in sustainability projects.
6 Workshop Descriptions Key Speakers Marta Chiarinotti Marta serves as the Gender Equality Officer for Kiel University s Faculty of Arts and Humanities and as Coordinator for Gender Measures for the Cluster of Excellence 'The Future Ocean'. Marta s workshop will focus on SDG 5, Gender Equality, giving participants the opportunity to reflect on the role of gender in Germany. Is gender inequality really as low as we think it is in Germany? Probing into this question, participants will form groups to delve into concealed biases we may find in advertisements, in newspapers, at schools and at universities. Moreover, the meaning of #MeToo for society, in light of recent denouncement of sexual assault and harassment will be examined. Michael Baum Michael is working for the project LeaP@CAU, which aims to enhance the teacher education progam at Kiel University. Following the urge to understand the fundamentals of the strange and fascinating world surrounding him, Michael studied technical biology, evolution and science teaching. He enjoys passing his fascination for scientific and environmental topics on to university students, children, and adults. He worked at the IPN, the University of Hamburg, and at museums in Germany and Hamburg, has given numerous public talks on coral reefs and is a trainer for Greenpeace. Convincing other people to recognize problematic issues is not too far from every teacher s daily task. In fact, theories and models from education research can help us understand how to succeed when we want another person to learn something, be it multiplication tables or the importance of achieving sustanable development goals. In Micahel s workshop, you will gain insight into educational concepts and be able to apply that to your favourite SDG.
