My Peeps Wall Hanging Technique: Designed By: Skill Level: Crafting Time: Finished size: Sewing, Fabric Crafting Marie Duncan Confident Beginner An evening 10 diameter Featuring Coats Dual Duty XP Hand Quilting thread My Peeps wall hanging is a fun way to celebrate the Easter season! A pretty Easter fabric is hooped for the base, and the peeps are made from hand-made paper! Beads give them eyes, and they are dancing along twisted cord made from a pretty Coats & Clark variegated thread! Supplies Susan Bates Hoop-La Embroidery hoop - 10 (25.40cm) Coats Dual Duty XP All Purpose Variegated thread-mexicana (color 9367) Coats Dual Duty Plus Hand Quilting thread - Black Coats Dual Duty XP thread - Black Background fabric yard (.46m) Yellow hand-made paper Cotton batting - 14 x 14 (35.56 x 35.36cm) square Single fold bias tape 1 pkg. wide ( mm) String or cord - 2 yards (1.83m) for drawstring 26 small glass beads for eyes Safety pin Version of 5
Make the twisted cord 1. Pull off 8 strands of Variegated thread that are about 30 (76.20cm) long. You don t have to cut each one, just pull off 30 (76.20cm) of thread, and double it back and forth to achieve the 8 strands. Tie a sloppy knot in one end. It needs to hold, and not pull through the bobbin so neatness does NOT count here! Be messy! 2. Insert the knot as shown, into the big, center hole of the bobbin. 3. Place the bobbin on the bobbin winder as shown, with the knot on the bottom. 4. Hold the thread out away from the machine, taut, and run the machine as if winding a bobbin, until the threads start pulling towards the machine. 5. Stop the machine, and holding the end of the thread in the left hand, grab the thread in the middle, and bring the left hand to the bobbin, folding the twisted thread in half. 6. Let the thread twist back on itself. It will probably be a bit messy, so run your fingernail along the cord to smooth out the bumps. Make the background. 1. On the background fabric, mark and cut a line (3.81cm) outside the outer circumference of the hoop. 2. Place the cut circle on top of a piece of cotton batting slightly larger than the circle. 3. Zig zag around the edge of the circle, securing the two pieces together. 4. Using a removable marking pen, draw a line through the diameter of the circle dividing it in half. Be sure to consider the design of the fabric. If it is a one-way print or has a definite pattern, be sure the line goes with the direction of the print. Mark lines at (3.81cm) intervals on either side of first line. 5. Stitch the first twisted cord on the marked line using a small (2.5 width) zig zag stitch. 6. Stitch the remaining four cords in place for a total of five cords. 7. Trim away the excess batting. 7. Tie a knot in the end, securing the cord. 2 of 5
8. Open out the bias tape and fold under the short side to create a finished end. Fold to match the raw edges and pin the first couple of inches in place at what will be the top of the circle. 9. Stitch along the original fold as shown, stitching the bias tape in place. When you reach the end, fold the end under to create a finished edge. 14. Mark the eyes with a pencil, and replace the yellow peep on the hoop. 10. Tie the end of the drawstring cord to a safety pin. Thread the drawstring through the casing. 11. Hoop the background in the hoop. Adjust as needed, then pull the drawstring tight, pulling the excess fabric together on the back of the hoop. 12. Print the pattern on page 5 and cut out 13 peeps from the printed paper. Arrange them on the hooped background and pin in place. Cut out the letters, and arrange near the bottom. When you are happy with the placement, remove the letters and set them aside. 13. Remove the first pinned peep, and use it as the pattern to cut it out of the yellow hand-made paper. 15. Thread the hand needle with black Hand Quilting thread. 16. Stitch the first peep in place using a running stitch. When you get to the area where the eyes are located, bring the thread from the bottom up to the right side at the marked eye location, and place a bead on the needle. Bring the thread to the wrong side, then repeat for the other eye bead. 17. Finish the running stitch. 18. Continue removing one peep pattern at a time, cutting it out in hand-made paper, then sewing it, before moving on to the next one. This keeps those peeps in order! 3 of 5
19. Finish all the peeps. 20. Using a needle with a larger eye, thread four strands of black Hand Quilting thread. Bring the ends together and tie a knot, resulting in 8 strands. 21. Give those peeps some legs by taking two large stitches with the 8 strands of thread. 22. Place the letters again on the background. Using a running stitch, hand sew the letters in place. 4 of 5
This square should measure 1" x 1" (2.54cm x 2.54cm) when printed. *** Measure templates before cutting to confirm printing at 100%***
