1 Amy Sanders paints richly detailed paintings -- capturing the beauty of pine woods, peaceful landscapes, joyful beach-goers, and the ocean and weather of the Cape. Pastel is her primary medium as its flexibility allows her to capture more expressively the beauty and depth of the scenes that she is drawn to. Amy is an award winning artist, Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, and a respected art juror in the art show circuit. Her work resides in collections throughout New England and abroad. She has been represented by the Addison Art Gallery of Orleans since "Making Waves" Class description: Who isn t fascinated by the water in all its forms, be it crashing against jagged rocks, raging in stormtossed seas, or in its calmer times, simply reflecting glittering sunlight like thousands of tiny diamonds? Artists for thousands of years have struggled to represent its essence. This studio workshop will be dedicated to an exploration of a variety of technical tricks and tips that can make the process of rendering water easier, such as focusing on what you see instead of what you think you see, understanding reflections, employing creative layering, widening your range of values, and being clever with a few simple tools. Participants are encouraged to bring frustrations, problems, concerns, etc., to guide the direction of the workshop. In fact, feel free to contact the instructor in advance via (aksanders@comcast.net). Adjustments can be made in the areas we focus upon. Demonstrations will be available, and conversations and explorations of materials and our works will be plentiful, but critiques will be by your invitation only. Any levels welcome.

2 Materials list: What materials are used can make a huge difference in the outcome of a piece even when the same working process is used. The following are critical for me in my work: 1. A sanded working surface. UArt is my preference because of its smooth and even surface, that accepts many layers. Size is up to you. 2. Pastels in the colors of the water you choose to render. For more realistic work, I encourage harder pastels, such as Rembrandt, Girault, or BlockX. Art Spectrum and Blick pastels will create a bit looser product.* 3. Pastels to make base layers/underpainting: For these I go big. My preference is Mt. Vision, dark blues, but any large pastel will do (Ludwig, Great American, etc.). Any pastel will do actually--just more work with harder and/or smaller pastels. 4. Pastel pencils: I use a lot of these but two I strongly encourage: General's White Charcoal (really a hard and very white pastel pencil) and Gioconda White. 5. Finger cots: I'll show you a technique I use these for. You can get them at most pharmacies. Quick hint: they last forever if refrigerated. 6. A stiff oil or acrylic paint brush to erase goofs (needn't be new). 7. A hard plastic white eraser. 8. Its winter and we won't be on the beach. Bring photo references to work from! 9. Based on your preferences, you might wish any or all of the following: Baby wipes, paper towels, an old hand towel, dust mask, latex or nitrile gloves, razor blade (for sharpening). That being said, students may attend using any materials they have and we will see what we can do with them. Experimentation is always fine, and you may wish your style to be very different from mine. *I've attached an image with my base color palette (Water_Base_Color_Palette.jpg), which I expand on or shift depending on what I do (minus the whites I use that I named above). GA is Great American, WN is Winsor Newton, now out of stock, but many of the colors are available in BlockX. Your color selection needn't match mine, but it gives an idea of where to start, should you wish more detail in what to get or bring.
