1 Get Prepped Organize & Prepare The tips I want to share with you today will help you prepare tomorrow for Scanning Day and increase your scanning speed. Tip 1: Divide & Conquer Arrange your photos into the following groups: yellowing photos, reddish photos, and faded photos. Grouping them together will allow you to color correct their issues quicker after you scan them. Tip 2: Don t Pull Photos Out of Your Albums Unless You Have To But Do Pull Photos Out of Frames Photos in older albums are sometimes hard to remove without tearing. Remove them only if you re certain they will not tear or degrade. Do pull photos out of their frames so the photo s surface touches the glass. Tip 3: Affix Loose Photos to Sheets of Paper Using Tape Adhere photos to sheets of paper. Try to arrange them so photos that need similar color corrections are on the same sheet of paper. See Tip 1. Tip 4: Take Notes Use post-it-notes as reminders to scan the backs of photos with messages. Jot down important dates on the front of the paper if dates of photos are on the back. Tip 5: Large Photos Need No Prep Any photo larger than your scanning bed does not need prep. Scan them as is.

2 Rescue Scanning Day Despite the fact that you and I are probably using different scanners, here are some important tips that apply to all of our projects including some configurations you ll definitely want to use if applicable: Tip 1: Clean the Glass Don t be 50 pictures deep into scanning and notice a blemish on every single scanned photo. Clean the scanner glass before you begin. Tip 2: Get Comfortable Find a comfortable place to scan if you have a lot of photos. Tip 3: Set the Right Configurations Scan Resolution: 600 dpi Mode: Photo mode or Color Photo Mode File Format: JPEG or TIFF Naming Conventions: On Dust Removal, Back-light Correction, other secondary options: use at own risk. Tip 4: Don t Worry About Cropping Don t worry about cropping or color correcting each photo or page as you scan. Tip 5: Double - Check Periodically check and verify that your scans are going to the right place!

3 Restore Part 1 Color Corrections In this lesson, you ll learn my process for quick color corrections using Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Step 1: After you scan your photos to your computer, open the scan in the editor. Step 2: Select the Rectangular Marquee tool. Draw a box (a selection) around the first photo. Step 3: Right click within the selection and choose Layer via Copy from the pop-up menu. A new layer will generate with a copy of the selection. Step 4: Target the original scan layer again. Then repeat steps 2 and 3 for each photo on the scan. Do this for all of your photos. Step 5: Target the first photo in the Layer s panel you want corrected. Navigate to the Image menu (Enhance menu for PSE) and choose one of three options: Auto Color (Auto Color Correction for PSE): Applies the basic color correction without contrast. Auto Tone (Auto Levels for PSE): Adjusts color with strong contrast to compensate for fading. Auto Contrast: Adds contrast without color correction. Step 6: Crop the workspace to just the newly color-corrected photo, save as a new file, print it or drag it to a new workspace and scrapbook.

4 Restore Part 2 Black & White Conversions In this lesson, you ll learn how to convert a color photo into the perfect black and white vintage image. Step 1: After you scan your photos to your computer, open the scan in the editor. Step 2: Click on the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon in the layer s panel. Choose Gradient Map from the pop-out menu. Step 3: Double-click the thumbnail of the Gradient Map (if not already open). Click on the Gradient Map s gradient editor and choose the black and white gradient. This step will change the image into a black and white photo. Step 4: Adjust the left and right markers at the bottom of the gradient color bar. Move the black marker towards the right to darken the image. Move the white marker towards the left to lighten the image. Adjust each until you find the right balance of black and white tones. Click OK and exit the Gradient Map editor. Step 5: Optional -- To tint the black and white with a single color, i.e.: Sepia, Midnight Blue, etc., click on the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon. Choose Photo Filter form the pop-up menu. Step 6: Choose a preset filter from the panel like Sepia, Blue, Magenta or cycle through the remaining choices. Use the Density slider (if available) or the Opacity slider to adjust the strength of the filter.

5 Retouch Tears & Stains The bad news is some vintage photos are filled with scratches, tears and stains. The good news is you can fix them to a point using your photo-editors. Step 1: After you scan your photos to your computer, open the scan in the editor. Duplicate the original photo layer to a new layer and make upcoming changes to the duplicate. Step 2: Optional -- Convert the photo to Black & White using the steps outlined in Restore Part 2. Black & White photos are easier to retouch. Step 3: Choose the Clone Stamp tool. Choose a Soft Round Brush set to a size between pixels. The size of the brush will depend on the size of the photo and the details you ll need to retouch. Set the opacity and flow (if applicable) to 100%. All other options should be set to their defaults. Step 4: With the Clone Stamp tool active, navigate over the photo, hold down the ALT key and click to sample an area of the photo. Release the Alt key. Navigate to another portion of the photo and click and drag and brush to replace areas of the photo with the sample. Step 5: Continue to clone-out tears, stains, scratches and additional undesirable parts of the photo. Additional Tips: Zoom in to 100% and out to consider the entire photo as you work or concentrate on specific areas.
