Lesson Launcher 10/12 Write the sentences and put a T or F 1.T/F New designs are always complicated 2.T/F Changes in design can make products easier to use 3.T/F Cost has no influence on the way objects are designed

Lesson 6: The Engineering Design Process What is the engineering design process? By the end of Lesson 6 you will be able to explain how the engineering design process develops technical solutions to meet peoples needs

What is technology? Textbook Page 64 Look at the picture in your textbook Raise your hand to answer What is a weaving loom? Textbook Question 5: How are science and technology related? Take a moment to write your answer before raising your hand to share Textbook Question 6: Why did they develop together? What is your supporting evidence? Did you explain your reasoning?

Question 6 sample answer The walls were built to protect the cities from invaders, soldiers couldn't break through or climb over the walls themselves, so they engineered away to launch objects over the walls.

Is all technology complicated? Textbook page 65 Other than zippers, what are two examples of simple technologies? Textbook Question 7: Fill in the venn diagram to compare characteristics of simple and complex technology (3 min) Work quietly and then raise hand to answer

Classroom technology hunt (6 min) In your notes create a t chart On one side put simple/ on the other put complex Search the classroom for examples of technology you may not leave the student area and go behind my desk, but you may look at my desk at list things you see 5 examples of each

Technology timeline Discussion Questions 1. How is each technology different from the one before it? 2. What scientific discoveries made these new technologies possible? 3. What are the peoples lifestyles and needs that go with the technology?

Riding Horses Humans used to be nomadic we lived in tents and traveled from place to place hunting for food and gathering plants to eat early on, horses were domesticated for warfare

Horse and cart As people began to settle in towns we used horses with carts or buggies attached Used to carry goods We now had crops from farming (which requires being settled in one place for years) We used these buggies to travel and trade goods Used to transport stone that would be used to build roads and bridges to make moving with wheels easier

Steam car Early industrial revolution Early cars were simple and powered by steam Like trains, they were revolutionary in that they moved on their own Early cars were mostly for show at large science festivals Before coal, many thought the world would be powered by steam one day

Early gas powered cars The first gas powered car ran 140 years ago In the early 1800s By the early 1900s only wealthy people had cars

Modern cars By 1950 having a car was a standard sign of the American dream and lifestyle Highways were built like crazy Old trucks in the south represent hard working culture Cars can also symbolize wealth and style

Cars of the future Most Americans today use a car that is 15 years old Cars have slowly become and economic burden and a source of pollution Many politicians are pushing for us to stop relying on the middle east for oil More people are riding together in one car to a common workplace More people are buying electric cars This is a trend in data

Assessment: due at end of class Predict how personal transportation might change over the next 50 years. Tell how peoples needs/lifestyle might change and then design a transportation technology that would meet their needs. (4 sentences) 1. How personal transportation might change 2. How peoples needs have changed 3. Why needs changed 4. How the new transportation technology meets their needs

Example Response 1. How might change - In 50 years more Americans will have electric, natural gas, or solar powered cars. 2. How needs changed - Oil based gas is seen as a waste of money and a cause of pollution. 3. Why needs changed - America also no longer wants to rely on the middle east for oil, or be caught up in their warfare. 4. How new transportation meets needs - In 50 years most cars will have electric charging ports, engines that run on natural gas, or will have solar power panels.

Lesson Launcher 10/16 1. Write this down Proto = first Type = kind or form 2. Example: engineers design a headlight prototype before making it in large numbers 2. Now write your definition of the word prototype

How Engineers Apply Science and Math to Solve Real World Problems Textbook page 66 & 67 Underline definitions Textbook page 68 What does methodical mean?

How do solar panels work? Video The Earth intercepts a lot of solar power: 173,000 terawatts. That s 10,000 times more power than the planet s population uses.

Video Discussion Questions 1. Is it possible that one day the world could be completely reliant on solar energy? 2. What problem could using solar energy solve? 3. What are the major physical barriers to using solar cells and modules? 4. What are the major social and political barriers to using solar energy? 5. How are these barriers connected to economics?

How Does The Engineering Design Process Work? Textbook page 70 & 71 Textbook Question 14: list the eight steps of the engineering design process, assuming the answer to all of the questions is yes What should you do if, after conducting research, you still don t have enough information to begin brainstorming solutions? What should you do if your prototype doesn t show promise?

Assessment 1. When a new technology is designed, does it usually work right away? Explain. 2. How are flaws in design identified and fixed? 3. Does the engineering design process always result in a perfectly finished prototype? Explain. 4. What are two constraints an engineer might face? (pg. 67) 5. If an engineer fives up one advantage for another, what is this called? (pg. 67)
