4 Agricultural Adjustment Act AAA Caption Placard 4.3B This poster was created by Ben Shahn in 1937 entitled Years of Dust. Shahn s promotional poster for the Resettlement Administration contrasts the plight of Dust Bowl Farmers with the bold actions of the New Deal. Shahn explained that the purpose of his posters was to explain to people who need it what is being done for them and to the others what they are paying for.

6 Federal Emergency Act FEA Caption Placard 4.3C A group of people waiting in line to receive surplus food from a government agency. Their facial expression and slumped postures reveal how difficult it was for Depression-era Americas to accept government aid.

8 Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation FDIC Caption Placard 4.4D Here people are depositing money in the National Safety Bank and Trust Company of New York in 1936, confident in the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) assurance of government backing for bank deposits.

10 National Youth Administration NYA Caption Placard 4.4E This is a 1936 painting created by Alden Krider for a Kansas State Fair exhibit. The painting celebrates the accomplishments of the National Youth Administration (NYA). In the foreground we see youth involved in a variety of NYA activities including road construction, surveying, and laboratory research. At the top are President Roosevelt s words when he established the NYA in 1935: We can ill afford to lose the energy and skills of these young men and women. In the background of the painting lurk the dangers that the NYA hopes to help young people to avoid: poverty, crime, and homelessness.

12 Civilian Conservation Corps CCC Caption Placard 4.4F A recruitment poster created by Albert Bender to promote the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The post highlights the opportunities for Work, Play, Study & Health that the CCC offered to young men. The style of the poster, with its celebration of workers and portrayal of the positive attributes of work, is reminiscent of Soviet propaganda posters from the same period.

14 National Labor Relations Act NLRA Caption Placard 4.4G A painting by Ben Shahn entitled Lest We Forget. The painting is based on photographs Shahn took in 1935 during trips to Arkansas while he was working for the Resettlement Administration. In the background we can see Marked Tree, a small Arkansas town where many strikers from the Southern Tenant Farmers Union were violently attacked by anti-union forces in the mid and late 1930s.

16 Public Works Administration PWA (Housing) Caption Placard 4.4H This is a public housing development called Williamsburg Houses in Brooklyn, New York. Built in the mid to late 1930s, this development replaced dilapidated housing and provided homes for 1,622 low-income families.

For examples, a piece of heavy equipment is pictured next to the lake in Florida, and the caption reads, Flood Control P.W.A. lends a helping hand to discipline Lake Okeechobee waters.

22 Tennessee Valley Authority TVA Caption Placard 4.4K A mural paint4ed by David Stone Martin entitled Electrification. The painting adorns the post office in Lenoir, Tennessee, which benefited from federal efforts to provide electricity to rural areas through the implementation of the Tennessee Valley Authority.
