2 SYNTRAN Cationic Acrylic Copolymers for Waterborne Stain-Blocking Paints and Lacquers INTERPOLYMER is an industry leading manufacturer of water-based polymers for a wide variety of markets. A new product line is now available for use as functional binders in specialty paints and lacquers. INTERPOLYMER has designed aqueous SYNTRAN acrylic, cationic polymer dispersions for immediate and permanent blocking of various difficult stains. This proprietary SYNTRAN cationic technology also allows the formulation of universal primers with excellent adhesion on critical substrates. Water-based, cosolvent-free and with low MFFT, SYNTRAN cationic copolymers allow convenient formulation of high performance paints in accordance with 2010 Decopaint Directive. Due to its cationic nature, formulations based on SYNTRAN cationic polymers should not be mixed with paints based on anionic binders. SYNTRAN cationic polymers are not stable at alkaline ph.

Bottom: As above, but with an additionally applied, non-pigmented primer based on SYNTRAN For accelerated staining, samples were exposed to 40 C and 100% rel. humidity for two days. Blocking of a Water-Based Wood Stain Left: Stained wood substrate covered with a nonspecialized, white, water-based primer and topcoat system. Severe bleeding is observed. Right: Same as on left side, but using a white stain-blocking primer based on SYNTRAN Here, even the primer shows no discoloration. (Note: In the lower parts of the picture, the substrate was covered with the primers only, whereas in the upper parts the primer/topcoat systems were applied). Tannin Stain Blocking on Framire Wood Left: Application of a white, stain blocking primer based on SYNTRAN 6301 and formulated with quartz. A synthetic plaster coating has been applied on top. Right: Application of a white stain-blocking primer based on SYNTRAN A conventional white water-based coating has been applied on top. Even when applied in a single coat, discoloration due to wood extractives can be prevented with SYNTRAN Polymers. The yellow discoloration of the synthetic plaster coating and of the conventional white paint indicates severe tannin bleeding. (A quartz based stain blocking primer is especially suitable for plasterboards or wood panels) Tannin Stain Blocking on White Oak Left: Application of a white, non-specialized, water-based primer. The yellow-brownish discoloration indicates severe tannin bleeding. Stain Blocking on Cork with Pigmented Systems Application of a clear stain blocking coating based on SYNTRAN 6301 and coloured with various Cationyl pigment preparations. Discoloration due to cork extractives is avoided and the original colour of the coating system is preserved. Graffiti Stain Blocking Left: Substrate stained with (from top to bottom) graffitis from red text marker, yellow text marker, black ball-point pen and blue OHP-pen. Middle: Graffiti stained substrate after application of a conventional, water-based, white paint. Severe bleeding is observed. Right: Same as in the middle, but with an additionally applied, non-pigmented stain blocking primer layer based on SYNTRAN Adhesion on Difficult Substrates Substrate: Wood panel coated with a white solvent-based alkyd coating and exposed to ageing. Left: Universal adhesion primer based on SYNTRAN 6301 and pigmented with Cationyl Violet. After cross hatch tape test, the primer based on SYNTRAN cationic technology shows excellent adhesion properties, no adhesion failure can be seen.
