68 Veneer Cuts The patterns of different kinds of veneers depend on the way a log of a tree is cut during processing. There are several ways to slice veneer. Each method gives rise to a unique grain pattern. 69 Veneer Figures A figure is characterised by its wavy texture. When light falls on the uneven arrangement of fibres, it gets reflected in a way that imparts a look of aesthetic unkemptness to the veneer. POMELLE Pomelle is a small to medium sized blister figure. The heavier and more uniform the blister, the more is its value in the market. It is extracted from large species of African trees like Sapele, Bubinga and Makore. MOTTLED Mottled is an irregular figure that runs across the surface of the veneer. It is characterised by a wavy and granular spiral pattern that gives veneers their wrinkled look. Mahogany, Sapele and Bubinga trees have a tendency to be mottled. CROTCH Crotch comes from the intersection point where the main branch of the tree meets the trunk. It is usually extracted from medium sized species like Mahogany and Walnut. BURLS Large, decorative and valuable, Burls resembles a tight cluster of dormant buds. Stunted growth has caused dark piths to run across the length of the buds. 66

70 Veneer Matching Veneer matching is the method of determining the final appearance of a panel by joining sheets of veneer end-to-end. Veneer matching techniques render a wide range of exquisite visual effects. The best method of matching veneers lies in ascertaining the degree of figure (grain, colour and natural characteristics) in the chosen timber species, the method of veneer production and the desired effect. BOOK Based on the mirror image principle, successive veneer leaves are turned over in a flitch, like pages of a book. Pairs are made by joining the edges. Book is generally used for quarter or rift cut veneers. REVERSE Method is generally used in crown cut veneers to balance out the crowns. The veneer leaves are slip-matched, and every second leaf is turned end to end. 67

71 SLIP Successive veneer leaves are placed in a flitch, one alongside the other, with their edges joined. This leads to a series of grain repeats. RANDOM Several kinds of veneer sheets are randomly matched with the intention of imparting unpredictable features such as knots, to the sheets. HORIZONTAL The sheets of veneer are joined edge to edge along a horizontal axis- in book or in slip- to create an unconventional but interesting effect. 68

72 Raw Materials VENEERS Only top-grade sheets of veneer are sourced from the manufacturers. They are characterised by a thickness of 0.6mm. Every species of wood is sourced directly from its country of origin, to ensure superior quality and variety. In many species, the procurement begins at the log-stage itself. The veneer is sliced in state-of-the-art European machines, according to strictly defined parameters and under the supervision of experienced producers. The sourced veneers are properly dried and treated to ensure character stability. BASE PLY The base ply in Wood Crrests Veneers is made exclusively from hardwood species of timber, like Gurjan and Keruing (of Dipterocarpus family). It is sourced in its entirety from Myanmar (Burma) and Indonesia. To ensure perfect assembly and bonding during the ply manufacturing process, the same species of wood is used for the core and the face layers. A single piece composed core is used to ensure zero core overlap or core gap. Commercial face veneer of 0.6 mm is used on both sides of the ply to ensure a perfectly smooth surface for the application of the decorative veneer. The base ply is very accurately calibrated, with minimal thickness tolerance & variation. What s more, only phenolic resins are used to make the plywood waterproof. 69
