4 Your English summary for the World JOTA-JOTI Report: From Norway a minimum of 3256 scouts and guides were reported to have participated in 59 th JOTA 20 th JOTI 2016 with 52 stations active in JOTA operated by a total of minimum 72 radio amateurs; and 52 JOTI bases were active, with a total of minimum 170 registered scout groups. Reports have not been received from all participating scout units, so therefore the numbers above represent minimum numbers (based on the uncomplete number of reports received). A Nordic Puzzle for this year's JOTA-JOTI was supposed to be made by Finland, according to an inter-nordic agreement, but the puzzle didn't materialize this year, unfortunately. Instead the participants reported many other activities for all the different categories of participating scouts. As part of Nordic coordination there are opening ceremonies for each Nordic country run sequentially on the 80 m scout frequency. The Norwegian official opening was conducted by the JOTA-2016 Headquarters station LA1JAM, operated by LA9SIA. The opening speech was given by the Norwegian International Commissioner Sindre Nesse at the opening ceremony transmitted from LA1JAM, and was also available from the official JOTA-JOTI web site both in the form of recorded audio and in written form. The Norwegian scout headquarters stations with JAM call sign suffixes contacted a number of JOTA stations during the JOTA-JOTI weekend. The Norwegian national JOTA-JOTI organizer (NJO) LA4LN, Tom V. Segalstad, operated from the LA4JAM scout headquarters station, and made many contacts with scout stations both domestically and abroad; among the latter HB9S. A special contact to be mentioned was the contact with LA9PF, Cato, who celebrates his 70 th year as a boy scout he is still a member of the Norwegian Gilwell scout leader training team, and he was the first Norwegian scout (and radio amateur) participating in JOTA almost 60 years ago and he is still an active JOTA participant! For many years we have noticed that the first snow for the winter season precipitates during the JOTA-JOTI weekend in Norway. This year was no exception! A number of the participating scout groups in this year's event experienced temperatures below the freezing point [of water] in cold, snowing weather. But this wintry weather did not afflict the participating scouts at all in their many activities outdoors, like erecting antennas, radio direction finding orienteering, evening camp fire; and their outdoors overnight camping in their tents or bivouacs made by the scouts from logs and spruce tree branches found in the forest! This is part of the year-around Norwegian scout training in the outdoors, regardless of whether there is warm sunshine weather or cold snowy weather; the latter being the circumstances also for this year's JOTA-JOTI. The type of weather, whether hot or cold, makes of course no obstacle for the Norwegian scouts participating in the annual JOTA-JOTI! In general, the NJO has the impression that all participating scouts had a good time. In addition to the many contacts with other scouts via radio or internet, a number of scout units had special activities like radio direction finding orienteering, electronic kit-building, signalling, different outdoors activities (like treasure hunting or different competitions); and the scout units operating from the station LA4O in JOTA-JOTI had historic activities related to the 160 th anniversary for the birth of the electrical engineer and inventor Nicolas Tesla; by many thought to be the person who invented the very basis for radio (being very relevant for JOTA: no radio no JOTA). The JOTA HQ station LA3JAM had two radios on the air simultaneously, which was operated by a total of 6 radio amateurs. One of their radios was dedicated to digital modes, and it was impressive for the scouts to see weather maps being received, decoded, and graphed on a connected PC screen, as well as NAVTEX signals making the scouts aware of the safety aspect of radio, especially when sailing a ship. The scouts also got to communicate with each other on morse code over a wire connecting two morse code keyers and beep generators. The scouts also got to build the electronic kit "COMBI-75", which was also available for kit building at the World Scout Jamboree NORDJAMB-75 in Norway in 1975 the kit is still popular among the scouts! 5 The LA1DFS scout station reports that many of their scouts during the JOTA-JOTI event wanted to qualify for the "JOTA-JOTI merit badge", which requires that the scout participates in a number of contacts via amateur radio and via the Internet, plus keeping a log for their contacts; plus requires the scout to know certain Q-codes and the ICAO phonetic alphabet. This makes a good introduction to, and recruitment for, amateur radio. And not only that one of the radio amateurs helping the scouts on the air, became recruited as a new scout leader during this JOTA-JOTI event! So the JOTA-JOTI event has obviously become a brilliant recruiting tool both ways between scouting and amateur radio! The LA1KYS scout station reports that the radio propagation was not the best for them, but they enjoyed some few but lengthy contacts, so that most of their scouts got to speak over the radio, and made new scout friends that way. They report that all scouts participated in JOTI, but that they expressed that they enjoyed JOTA the most, in spite of the poor radio propagation they had. They all look forward to better radio propagation for next year's JOTA! The LA6M JOTA station participated from northern Norway, far north of the Arctic Circle, and were bothered by the active northern lights (Aurora Borealis) making "black-out" on the 80 and 40 meters bands, but still allowed them to make some contacts with other JOTA stations on the 20 meters band. The LA7G JOTA station reports their most fascinating contact with the scouts operating the JW5E radio amateur club station in Svalbard in the Arctic, halfway between the North Pole and the northern tip of Norway, probably the most northernmost participating scouts in JOTA in the World?
