ROBO~SUMO Introduction Robot Sumo competitions since their origin in Japan have from time to time proved to be test benches for robotic platforms all over the world owing to the real time constraints and time critical maneuver execution requirements. We, robovitics plan to bring a small piece of the pie to our neighborhood by going ahead with the tradition and making this hugely popular event which has been a fan favorite for years, a part of our robotics arsenal this year. Let the Battle Begin!!! 1
Problem Statement Build a robot whose task is to push the opposing robot out of the circular ring or out of the arena. It can push, throw, flip, drag, or otherwise move your opponent out of arena in given time. Different robots compete one on one against each other in a knock out tournament. So one who has the strength and the mind to out play the opponent others will emerge victorious. And the game goes on with just a temporary successor, until you get to be the "King of the Ring". 2
Robot Specifications Dimensional specifications (Physical): The robot can have maximum dimensions of Length: 35 cm Breadth: 35 cm Height: Participants choice Weight: Less than 5 kg Control specifications: The robot can be autonomous or manual(i.e.can be controlled by wired/wireless). Power specifications: Power supply should be constrained to 24 volts DC. Robot may have power supply on board. There would be provision for 240 volts 50 Hz AC power supply. The participants are supposed to bring their own extension cords if necessary. Event Split Up ROUND 1 : QUALIFYING ROUND The Qualifying Stage will be conducted on a Circular Sumo ring of 2m diameter. The robot has to push a weight of 1.5 kg out of ring within a time limit of 2min. The weight of 1.5 kg can be achieved by using single or multiple blocks. It depends solely upon the organizers. But the robot has to push the weight all together (even though if there are multiple blocks), failing which will lead to disqualification. 3
The robot has push a weight of 1.5 kg out of the outer circular ring ROUND 2 : ONE ON ONE In this round, the robots try to avoid falling out or avoid being pushed out by the opponent robot. The first robot that touches outside of the ring loses the round. General rules and regulations of Robo-Sumo apply everywhere. The figure below explains when the robot will be considered out of the ring. The round continues till any of the robots have their parts inside the circular arena. As soon as any one of the robots moves out of the ring completely, the round ends. 4
ROUND 3 : ROYAL RUMBLE All the teams which qualified the 2nd round will enter the third round. Groups of 4 teams will be made randomly. All the 4 teams of each group will compete with each other simultaneously in the arena. Each team will be given at max 3 chances before being knocked out. Each royal rumble round will have only one winner. This process will go on until we have a supreme winner. General rules and regulations of Robo-Sumo apply everywhere. Rules and Regulations ROUND 1 : QUALIFYING ROUND The robot has to push the weight out of the outer ring of the arena. During this run, the robot should NOT go out of the circular ring in any case. In case when the robot moves out of the circular ring, the robot will be considered disqualified. The robot has to push the weight all together (even though if the weight is comprised of multiple blocks), or else the robot will be disqualified. A maximum time of 2 minutes will be given for each robot. Each robot can have only one run. There will not be any second or trail run. ROUND 2 : ONE ON ONE General Rules (Round 2) The robots have to fight one on one. Three rounds of 2 minutes each, is conducted for every match. A round ends when -: - One of the bots is flipped over by the other bot. - If a bot is pushed out of the arena. - One of the bots falls out of the arena by itself. - A bot is immobilized for more than 30 seconds. The participants are not allowed to touch the robot during the duel. 5
Coordinator reserves the right to change the duration of the rounds as deemed fit on the day of the event. A time out of 1 minute will be given in between each of the 3 rounds. Any team which is unable to fight again after 1 minute will be eliminated. If the robot crosses the boundary itself then it will be declared loser and the opponent will be declared the winner for the round. If both the robots cross the boundary simultaneously then the one with the minimum dimensions will be declared the winner. For winning a round the opponent should be completely put out of the arena (outer circular ring). Mere touching the line will not result in losing the match. Each stage eliminates the teams which lose and the remaining teams continue to next stage. This is done perpetually to decide which teams enter the next round. Ready-made assemblies/steering mechanism/gear drives/chassis are not allowed. Ready-made PCBs and electronic circuitry are, however, allowed. Any damage caused to the arena will result in disqualification of the robot. Any discrepancies that may arise are solely solved by the organizers and it remains final. Game Play Rules (Round 2) Two robots compete in each bout, each trying to stay in the arena longer than the other robot. Robots are encouraged but not obliged to actively push their opponent out of the arena. At the beginning of each bout, the two robots are placed on opposite sides of the arena, each lying (at least partly) over the white perimeter marking. The robots are positioned so that a straight line joining them can pass through the center point of the arena. The initial orientation of each robot will be specified by the referee. The bout ends either when a robot leaves the arena or once 2 minutes have elapsed, whichever occurs first. If only one robot remains in the arena at the end of the bout, that robot is the winner. If both robots remain in the arena at the end of the bout, the robot having more points (on the basis of immobilizing it i.e. 10 points for every 3 6
seconds) will be declared as winner. Immobilizing includes holding a robot (but not lifting), flipping a robot, turning it etc. If at the end of the bout, both robots leave the arena, the robot which leaves second (as decided by the judges) is the winner. If a robot remains immobilized for 30 seconds or more, it can be disqualified at the discretion of the judges. This may include robots which have moving parts, but are nonetheless immobilized (e.g. upside down). If both robots remain stationary for 10 seconds while in contact with each other (i.e. locked in battle), both robots may be returned to their starting positions at the judges' discretion. In this event, the timer for the bout will not be reset. ROUND 3 : ROYAL RUMBLE General Rules (Round 3) Four robots will fight together in a single round. The robots will start from four different points on the perimeter such that they are equidistant from each other initially. Each robot can be rendered as kicked out of the round a maximum of three times. After that that particular robot will be disqualified. Once being kicked out, the robot will be put to its initial starting position on the perimeter. A robot will be kicked out if It is flipped over by another robot. It is pushed out of the arena. It falls out of the arena by itself. It is immobilized for more than 30 seconds. Rest rules remain the same as those of the previous round. 7
Game Play Rules (Round 3) Four robots compete together in a bout. Each robot can be kicked out a maximum of three times, after which it is disqualified. There is NO time limit for this round. As soon as a robot is kicked out, it is placed at its starting position immediately. This goes on till all the robots are disqualified one by one and a winner emerges. A time out of 1 minute will be provided after every 2 minutes to all the bots. Any team which is unable to fight again after 1 minute will be eliminated. In case all the four teams are disqualified, there is NO winner for that particular round. Rest rules are similar to the rules of the previous round. These rules have been drawn up with thoughtful deliberation and in consultation with the competitors. However, it is impossible for absolutely every eventuality to be foreseen, so common sense may need to be applied. Therefore, in all matters, the decision of the judges is absolutely final. NOTE: 1. In all the case, the event coordinator s decision will be the final. 2. The organizers can change the rules and regulations of the events any time without the information of the participants. Any changes made will be reflected online. It is the sole responsibility of the participants to keep themselves updated. An updated version of this Problem Statement will always be available online at slideshare.net/robovitics and events.robovitics.in/robosumo 8
The robots will be judged upon by the following rules: Judging Criteria If a robot is immobilized, 10 points will be given to the opponent for every three seconds of mobility. If a robot moves out of the arena or is flipped over by another bot, then the opponent team gets 50 points. A robot is disqualified if it remains in state of immobility for more than 30 seconds. For Round 2, the team with more number of points at the end of all the three rounds will be considered as the winner. In case both the teams have same points, the team with smaller dimensions will be the winner. The awards will be decided only on the basis of the robot s performance in the third round. The first prize goes to the supreme winner. The second prize goes to the last robot which was defeated by the supreme winner. The best design award goes to any one of the teams which reached the third round. This will be decided by the organizers on the spot. The robot having on board power source (i.e. battery) will be given 10 points by default. 9
ROBO-SUMO arena The arena consists of a smooth wooden surface, having a circular ring of inner diameter of two meters as shown below. This is just for representation; the actual arena may have slight modifications. INNER CIRCLE IS OF DIAMETER 2 METRES 10
