Your Shop as Makerspace by Schacht Spindle Company, Inc. Makerspaces are finding their way into all kinds of businesses and places. Crafting is everywhere. Make your shop a place people want to gather to make. Ideas for different kinds of maker events: Make and take classes. A 2-3 hour class. Full day wall hanging class. Lots of fringe and texture. Use found objects, natural fibers and yarn. Try It. Create a try it event. Customers pay a small fee to make something with guidance from a staff person or shop teacher. Maker Event. A special all-day event. Participants pay a fee to try anything at the event. Your own shop Maker Faire. Demo. Announce ahead of time that you are going to do a special demonstration at your knit night or maker night. This could be a new product (Lilli Loom, for example), that you demo, or a new technique or yarn. Partner with other businesses in your shopping area. Think: dinner-craft-music event. Or, an afterhours easy make event at your local coffee shop. Ours recently hosted a make a bracelet kit partnering with a local yarn shop. Create a series of maker classes. Make a class passport that offers a free class on the 10 th class, for example. The next step: Your maker participants want to try out something without a major commitment of time or money. Some will be satisfied with their projects; others will want to learn more. Build on the interests that develop from your maker classes with courses that require more commitment and aim towards mastery. Think of the maker classes as tasting classes. Ensure success: Embrace fun. You must create an inviting space nurtured by an inviting staff. There is a real need to make something with your hands. Your classes should focus on exploration and not perfection. Your maker event is also social. Create time and an atmosphere where people can get to know each other. Your maker events (and this extends to everything you do) must be about creating community. Your shop is the maker community.
Your Shop as Makerspace Get the word out everywhere you can. Advertise your class everywhere you can: Facebook Shop newsletter Shop posters Instagram (is where it s happening) If you don t currently have an Instagram account and post really appealing images there, you are missing out on getting the word out to potential customers. Blog

Helpful Books: this is a selection of books available from Schacht Spindle Company that are useful in designing maker classes and events at your shop. 100 Pin Loom by Florencia Campos Correa More than just squares, this inspirational title with the Zoom Loom on the cover includes color and weave patterns, novelty yarns, and projects that are hip and inspirational. Great resource for the Schacht Zoom Loom. DIY Woven Art by Rachel Denbow If you started weaving in the 70 s or early 80 s, the images in this book will recall a time when weaving was all about texture and fiber art. The colors have shifted from browns and greens to pinks and golds, but the ideas remain: weaving on frame looms with woven-in dowel hangers, chunky yarns, and loads of fringe. The author has captured the current DIY retro appeal of the new generation of weavers. Includes 15 colorful projects. Use as a resource for Schacht School Loom and Lilli Loom. Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom by Syne Mitchell Starting from the beginning, Syne Mitchell explains in great detail how to warp and weave on the rigid heddle loom. She offers instruction on tapestry, transparency, pick-up, and finger-control techniques, as well as weaving with additional heddles. Attractive projects illustrate many of the techniques and are clearly presented. Schacht Cricket Loom and Flip Rigid heddle looms.
Making Felted Friends by Sue Pearl Make the cutest animals using fleece, hand cards for blending, and needle felting tools. Basic needle felting techniques are explained with clear pictures and instructions. The bulk of the book is made up of step-bystep instructions for imaginatively adorable critters. Use this as a basis for a needle felting class. The Schacht Mini hand carders are great for these small felting projects. Pin Loom Weaving by Margaret Stump If you want a lot of cute patterns for making animals, quilts, or even a Barn House Tote, Pin Loom Weaving will take you there. Warping, weaving, and clear step-by-step project details are included. Schacht Zoom Loom is great for these projects. Pin Loom Weaving to Go by Margaret Stump This sequel to the author s first book, Pin Loom Weaving, presents step-by-step instructions for 30 projects. Imaginative designs ranging from an American flag blanket, to a fun fox bag, to stylish scarves, offer ideas to please most any weaver. Included are excellent instructions and colorful illustrations. Schacht Zoom loom and Schacht Mini Loom.
Tapestry Weaving by Kirsten Glasbrook The author trained as a weaver in Denmark, where she was born. After moving to London in the 1960 s she spent time restoring antique tapestries and taught part time at the Bath Academy of Art for many years. Ms. Glasbrook now lives and works in Devon, running workshops and classes for adults and children. Her mastery of tapestry techniques gleaned from years of experience as a weaver and teacher comes through in this how-to volume which includes simple and traditional techniques rendered in brilliant color ranges and a diversity of textures. Looms: Schacht Tapestry, School, and Lilli Looms are all great for learning tapestry techniques. Time to Weave by Jane Patrick Everyday materials are transformed into imaginative, artful projects in this how-to book. Clear instructions with step-bystep photos illustrate the projects, often created on a simple frame loom or no loom at all. Great ideas for kids and adults alike. Note: this loom is out of print but is available digitally. Easy projects that use either no loom or a small frame loom (Schacht Mini Loom or Lilli Loom). The Weaver s Idea Book by Jane Patrick This book showcases the broad range of possibilities that can be achieved with the rigid heddle loom (Schacht Cricket and Flip Looms). Included are chapters on plain weave, using color and texture, finger-control, pick-up, and warpfaced weaving. Two heddle weaving explores warping and weaving as well as double weave. Step-by-step instructions with photos makes understanding each technique easy. Includes 10 engaging projects.
