The editors have simply put together a number of examples they felt would be of interest to enthusiasts throughout the world and in doing so hope that this would also benefit the favoured heraldic artists and craftsmen of the armigers concerned. Containing 82 Letters Patent and over 233 other images, most of which have never been seen by the general public before, this book brings to life an infectious enthusiasm shared by its armigerous contributors. Participation in this project was free and the editors thank all contributors for generously sharing with them the armorial bearings they hold so dear. The images illustrating this publication are supplied by the armigers themselves. V O L U M E 6, I S S U E 1. Early in 2011, in anticipation of the 340th anniversary of the Lyon King of Arms Act 1672 The Armorial Register Limited, publishers of The International Register of Arms, invited the submission of digital photographic material for the publication of a fully illustrated book dedicated to the many practical ways in which Scottish Armigers of today enjoy and demonstrate their personal armorial bearings. This book is the result of the generous cooperation of participating Scots armigers. This volume is not an armorial; its main purpose is to illustrate practical usage of Scots Armory in the 21st century. All of those whose arms are recorded within its covers have armorial bearings recorded in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland and participants in this project were invited to submit photographs, along with as much detail as they wished, of any armorial item they have made use of be it their Letters Patent, library painting, crest badge, seal matrix, flag, cutlery, dirks, sporrans, engraved items or anything else which was deemed to be heraldically relevant. As a bare minimum the editors asked that their entry should be illustrated with an original grant of arms or matriculation document and as a conces- Featured Armorial Bearings Nathaniel L. Peterson

Arms: Vert a gamelyon rampant grasping a sword Argent hilted and with an eagle-headed pommel Or, in chief an arc of five suns radiant the centre one larger than the others also Or. Crest: [On a wreath Argent, Vert and Or] A gamelyon sejant affronty extendant grasping in the dexter paw a sword pointed down Argent, hilted and with an eagle's head pommel Or, grasping in the sinister paw a pole Proper with a spear tip Or with a pennon Vert and Argent a sun radiant counter-charged and mantled Vert doubled Or. Badge: A sheathed sword pointed down hilted and with an eagle-headed pommel Or scabbard Vert charged with five suns radiant in pale Or dragon-winged expanded Argent. Motto: 'However long the night, the dawn will break' The armiger chose Vert to represent joy, hope, benevolence, mercy and leadership; Argent to represent the state of grace and Or to represent love and truth. The Gamelyon is a hybrid, composed of a lion's body with dragon wings and the head of a wolf, dragon or possibly even a griffon, which exhibits a dragon s forked tongue. In similar fashion, the armiger s DNA is composed of African, European and at least three other trace regions and numerous sub regions. The armiger appears differently to people, depending on their experience, expectations and perceptions. The 'rampant' pose is used to represent active selfless service and the armiger s struggle against self imposed paralysis and indifference. The barbed tongue is a reminder of an ADR truism, that words have power. The dragon wings (which are actually bat wings) symbolize flexibility, adaptability and movement, as bats are much more manoeuvrable in the air than birds. The Gamelyon is tied to the Arthurian Legends, which ties into the armiger s enjoyment of fantastic literature. The Sword & Eagle Pommel : The eagle represents and honours the armiger s ancestors and the hilt and sword honour their struggle and survival through migration, slavery and transition. It also honours the numerous members of the family who served in the military and survived wars. There are five suns because the number five symbolizes the Eons with the current eon being the central larger one. The suns represent life, action and energy. They also represent the immediate families of the armiger and his wife Morina : one for each set of the siblings, the armiger's parents and his wife being expressed by the central sun. The crest sword is pointed downward as a representation of combat that has ended. It was the armiger s desire to enter the military, but that plan fell through. Also, once again, the Eagle is raised in a position of honour. Pennon - The raised pennon is a personal admonition to continue developing my servant, leadership and mediation styles. I am to do so with the meanings of Vert and Argent, inter-mixed, in mind. The badge represents a sword ready for use, but only as a last resort. The dragon wings embody flexibility and options. The stars mirror the symbolism of the shield stars, while the eagle has also been described on both the shield and the crest.

Regardless of jurisdiction, geographic area, customs, favored styles and favored period, the community focuses on wider joys of heraldry. The goal of the organizers is that eventually all heraldry enthusiasts will acknowledge the event in the years to come. IHD is celebrated on June 10th yearly. A grass roots movement, started by Tomasz Steifer (Poland), a Fellow of the International Association of Amateur Heralds (IAAH) ( amateurheralds.com/ ) described the effort: We propose that this international day of heraldry at 10 June. On that day, in the year 1128, in Rouen was knighted, by his future father in law, Henry I Beauclerc, Godfrey Plantagenet. Suspended during the ceremony on the neck of a young knight shield blue decorated six golden lions, is recognized by most of the heralds, for the first time in history, fully formed coat of arms. IHD Badge - Alexander Liptak (USA) The inaugural year, the IAAH approached brick and mortar heraldry organizations with little response. In social media, a face book page was established ( ). Last year, the second annual celebration, saw a high level of participation in social media. Several artists produced graphic to celebrate the event. Several T-shirts were made available, including one which featured shields from many different countries. This year s organizers are currently requesting armigers to send their shield graphics and city/country locations to celebrateheraldry@gmail.com for inclusion in this year s shirt. The administrators of the face book page (6 people representing the Poland, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States of America) have began the push in social media to advertise IHD and to garner participation of the wider heraldic community. They have sent to a variety of heraldic organizations asking them to advertise and support the event. Expansion from social networking to active forums, blogs, and brick and mortar organizations is a goal of the organizers this year. Anyone is welcome to contact us to post local, regional, and international events throughout the year on our FB page. All interested parties are welcome to join us celebrating International Heraldry Day 2015! IHD 2014 "Personal Arms Around the World" T-Shirt Please download the free IHD Graphics provided by Tomasz Steifer this year and pass the word to everyone you know! They can be obtained by downloading the zip file at: key=nbz3rlqmyckv Publication in full is authorized. Any desire to reduce the information and/or use fewer or other images requires notification and approval of the author. IHD Graphics available courtesy of Tomasz Steifer (Poland)

4 Page 4 V O L U M E I I We are often asked by new registrants when the next volume of The Register (that in which their own armorial bearings will feature) will be available to purchase; this is the most often asked question and is quite possibly the most difficult one that we ever receive. How long is a piece of string? The best answer that we can give is that the quicker we receive new entries, the quicker we can put together the next volume. We have a little way to go yet but we are well on the way towards volume II and so, we are pleased to announce that: The Editors are now collecting together all the entries in readiness for the preparation of Volume II of The International Register of Armorial Bearings. Although we have a little way to go before the volume will be ready for printing and release for sale, we feel that we now have sufficient material to begin the necessary preparatory editorial work. However, we do still need some more entries. Sample pages are now being produced in order to gauge the layout of the book for the printers. Those who wish to see their armorial bearings featured in Volume II who have yet to submit their application to the Register are urged to do so as soon as they are able. Here are two, very small, images which are screen shots of two of the entries which will feature in Volume II of The Register. Left is that of Douglas Evan Solberg-Bell, Registered: The International Register of Arms, 4th November Registration No (Vol.2). Above is the entry for David Arthur Douglas GCJ, PhD. Registered: The International Register of Arms, 06th January Registration No (Vol.2). Each entry will be of A4 page size on full colour quality paper and the book will be bound in a hard back cover. Details of why we believe that an entry in The Register is beneficial can be found overleaf.

5 Page 5 W H Y R E G I S T E R? WHY REGISTER A COAT OF ARMS? Whether your coat of arms has been granted by an heraldic authority, has been inherited or you have assumed it anew, registration can have the following benefits: Registration ensures that the arms will be published in The Armorial Register s Volumes which are printed and deposited in the British Library and other libraries internationally. All editions are available to purchase as an addition to your own family library. Deposit libraries include: The Bodleian Library Oxford University; The Cambridge University Library; National Library of Scotland; National Library of Wales; Trinity College Dublin and The British Library. Registration allows a person or organisation to record and display their coat of arms in a publicly accessible online database 'The International Register of Arms'. A complete record of the International Register online database will be archived by British Library UK Web Archive approximately twice every year. This means that a complete record of the website and all changes to its content will be recorded. Thus building a permanent picture of the site s development and expanding content for years to come. Registration distinguishes inherited and original heraldic designs from bogus "surname coats of arms" and "family crests." Registration in our publicly searchable database can prevent others from unintentionally assuming the same coat of arms. Registration creates a documented date-certain for the use of the arms, which can settle disputes if someone later claim the same design. All registrants will receive a simple certificate in.pdf format and can also purchase an additional quality sealed certificate for framing. Registration allows the arms to be stored in standardised, written form, called a "blazon," which stabilises the design and allows it to be more easily preserved and transmitted and to be found in an electronic search. Registered entries can include the design rationale and history of the arms, preserving the information for the public and future generations. Registration of a personal coat of arms in honour of a parent or grandparent creates an enduring memorial and a symbol of family identity to all the honouree s offspring. Registration of non-personal arms helps promote the organisation's visibility on the internet. Register your Coat of Arms in Volume 2 of The Armorial Register - International Register of Arms. Entries are now being accepted for Volume 2 of the The Armorial Register - International Register of Arms (the Register) (formerly Burke's Peerage & Gentry International Register of Arms) online armorial which will also eventually be released as a book as per Volume 1. Price: & UK Pounds

All future reprints will be in the livery of The Armorial Register Limited. Assumed Arms If you live in a country where there is no regulation of heraldry and you are thinking of assuming arms then we urge you to seek proper advice before doing so. There are a number of individuals, associations and societies offering expert free advice and some, such as the American Heraldry Society, The International Heraldry Society and the International Association of Amateur Heralds (don t be put off by the word Amateur, their knowledge base is quite expert and very comprehensive), even offer free design assistance. Once you have decided on your basic design there are a number of excellent artists practicing both traditional and new and exciting digital techniques who would be pleased to produce a library painting/image of your newly acquired armorial bearings at a reasonable price. Don t be afraid to seek the assistance of others and don t make the mistake of believing that it is only those who earn a living out of heraldry who know how it should be done. Throughout the history of armory almost all of the most learned scholars with published works on the subject of heraldry have been proud to have been called amateurs.
