Almost all of our products are FSC or PEFC certified and in line with the EU Timber Regulation we do not purchase timber from anyone that cannot prove it has been sustainably sourced. 4 ENVIRONMENT The natural beauty of wood 4 We often think we can do a better job than nature, particularly in the case of building materials, but we re generally wrong. By using wood in your project whether it s fencing, decking, external cladding or internal cladding for the trendsetters out there, you re adding a natural and unique feature to your design. Each piece of wood you use will have natural characteristics such as colour variation, grain patterns, knots and medullary rays so no two boards will look exactly the same. These unique characteristics add visual appeal to the wood and mean there s something new to discover each time you look. Why choose wood? Wood doesn t just have a pretty face; it s strong too and lasts longer than you might think. There s actually a 7th century Japanese temple made from wood that is still standing today. The cellular structure of wood means it s a great thermal insulator, typically 15 times better than concrete to be precise, so you ll save energy and money by simply adding a feature to your home. By choosing wood, you re helping to create a higher demand, which can encourage forest expansion, reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Environmentally friendly All of the wood we supply is sustainably sourced, always has been, always will be. That s why the majority of our products are PEFC and FSC certified. You may think that the timber industry is the cause of deforestation when actually the opposite is true. Responsibly managed forests plant multiple saplings for every tree they fell increasing the size of the forest, and also increasing the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere. Manufacturing timber also has the lowest energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. For example manufacturing a wooden spoon only needs 0.2 megajules and produces 17g of carbon dioxide, whereas it would take 5.9 megajules to manufacture a stainless steel spoon and produce a massive 460g of carbon dioxide. For every cubic metre of wood that is used instead of other materials, the Forestry Commission state that between 0.7 and 2.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide are saved. So every step of the way, using wood in your project drastically reduces your carbon footprint.

6 CLADDING Cladding Overview Silva Timber offer a wide range of timber cladding including Western Red Cedar, Siberian Larch, ThermoWood and Iroko. Traditionally horizontal and vertical cladding is used externally although interior cladding is now being used more often in contemporary designs. Our cladding range includes a variety of profiles such as tongue and groove, channel, shiplap, bevel, board and batten and rainscreen so whatever style you re looking to achieve, we ve got the perfect cladding profile. 7 CASE STUDY Cladding Case Study The quality of the Western Red Cedar that we received was above my expectations. The natural colour stood out straight away, and the quality of the machine finish was excellent! Mark Lishman, Deputy Manager & Head of Facilities at Lane End Conference Centre PROJECT: THE CEDAR CLUB, HIGH WYCOMBE Lane End Conference Centre recently completed their brand new purpose built leisure centre in High Wycombe. The double storey sports and leisure centre was designed by Brocklehurst Architects and project managed by the Conference Centre themselves. The sports and leisure centre was very appropriately named The Cedar Club. After receiving various samples and discussing his options with the customer service team, it was decided that Western Red Cedar No 2 Clear & Better Microline Channel cladding was the best option. In keeping with the theme of cedar, the interior of the building was linked to the exterior using a clever feature wall made out of Western Red Cedar offcuts. This wall (right) has proved extremely popular with visitors and interior designers alike. 7

10 SIBERIAN LARCH Siberian Larch Siberian Larch boasts an impressive set of natural attributes that make it ideally suited for use as timber cladding. This unique wood species has a pleasing appearance and is durable, stable and dense. It will provide excellent long-term performance even in the harshest of environments. Our Siberian Larch is sourced directly from leading sawmills in the Irkutsk region of Siberia, from a consistent and reliable raw material that exceeds the official GOST ( grading standards). Kiln dried at source to a moisture content of 16-18% (+/-2%) allowing for immediate application of a finish and minimal acclimatisation on site. 14 IROKO Iroko Iroko is an extremely popular hardwood, especially in high-end domestic locations. It is frequently used in decking, cladding and slatted screens where durability is a requirement thanks to Iroko s highly versatile nature. Iroko (Chlorophora excelsa) is native to the west coast of Africa. It is tough, dense and very durable. Iroko is an attractive alternative to Teak. It resembles Teak in grain patterns and colour after ageing. Colours range from a light yellow-brown to a deeper golden-brown, but tend to darken slightly over time, providing a rich and evocative colour tone. 15 Cladding Case Study CASE STUDY PROJECT: MAGGIE S CANCER SUPPORT CENTRE The Robert Parfett building in Manchester, one of the newest Maggie s centres, was designed by leading architect Lord Norman Foster and inspired by the existing green spaces to create a building that complements the surroundings. The single storey building was constructed with a timber frame, with latticed beams forming a design feature inside, to generate a warmth that comes from using natural materials instead of concrete. The use of timber also extends outside where Siberian Larch bevel cladding was used to create a relaxing, homely first impression. The presence of natural materials helps Maggie s achieve their goal of providing a non-clinical space where people can get practical, emotional and social support. Siberian Larch is a very dense softwood ideal for cladding, as Maggie s wanted to create a clean, fresh and light look to encourage people to drop in, they chose to finish the cladding in Sansin SDF Pickled White. 15

17 Decking Case Study CASE STUDY It was the soft, warm colours of Yellow Balau that really stood out for me Joanne Willcocks, Garden Designer PROJECT: CHESHIRE LAKESIDE GARDEN - YELLOW BALAU A delightful barn conversion on a lakeside in Cheshire had already received an extensive internal make-over and it was now the turn of the garden. The existing garden was dominated by hard landscaping and very few plants. What was required was something more in keeping with the surroundings that enabled the owners to sit, relax and enjoy the view. Thus a design was created with the curved path, made up of varying widths, meandering through natural planting to the lakeside. Jo considered a number of materials for the path but felt that timber was the most appropriate and sensitive to the site s location. The owners are delighted with the results and how it has opened up the garden space. They particularly love the feel of the wood underfoot. The choice of timber has proved very successful as it mellows into its setting and the rich colours of the wood look wonderful. 17

22 Ipé IPE DECKING Ipé is a tropical hardwood with unique performance characteristics that has earned a reputation as one of the world s toughest and best performing wood species. Its incredible durability, dimensional stability and attractive appearance make it particularly well suited for decking and other exterior applications. The general appearance of Ipé is a lustrous rich reddish-brown colour, however closer inspection will reveal colour tones ranging from light to very dark olive brown, often with distinctive thin veins of lighter or darker striping. 23 Yellow Balau YELLOW BALAU DECKING Yellow Balau Bangkirai is a very durable hardwood and one of the most popular species in the UK for hardwood decking. It is a hard, heavy and strong timber that is well suited to deck construction. With a mixture of warm colours of golden browns, light browns and pale reddish-browns, Yellow Balau offers a unique colour range which will sit beautifully within a natural environment. 24 MANDIOQUEIRA DECKING Mandioqueira Mandioqueira is an attractive and versatile South American hardwood species that is mostly straight grained with an attractive natural light golden brown appearance. It has a medium texture and a medium golden lustre. A naturally decay resistant wood species that offers excellent performance characteristics. 26 Garapa GARAPA DECKING Garapa is a lustrous wood with a fine uniform texture. The grain is straight to interlocked and occasionally slightly interlocked. Garapa is fairly consistent in appearance with golden brown being the predominant colour tone. Our Garapa decking has a surface that is almost entirely free of knots and other natural defects. The growing region from which Silva s Garapa is harvested produces large trees with substantial boles that yield a high volume of exceptional quality clear grade (knot free) timber. 30 WESTERN RED CEDAR FENCING Rainscreen Slatted Screen Boards Shiplap Fence Boards Slatted screens with more privacy and natural light penetration. Western Red Cedar rainscreen profiled boards are usually installed horizontally to accentuate the length of the structure. When used in garden design this creates the illusion that the space is longer or wider than it is in reality. This profile is the shape of a parallelogram with its two sides at opposing angles. It is installed with a narrow gap between adjacent boards to allow a small amount of light and air to filter through. A Rainscreen fence is perect for situations where the open airy feel of a slatted screen is required, but also where a level of privacy is needed. 31 Traditional Fencing WESTERN RED CEDAR FENCING Tongue & Groove Fencing: Western Red Cedar Tongue & Groove V- Joint (known as TGV) profiled boards can be used in the creation of horizontal, vertical or even diagonal solid board fences. They are typically utilised in contemporary garden design and commercial applications to achieve an attractive high end appearance. The fact that the boards interlock means that this type of fence can provide total privacy. Board & Batten Fencing: Board-and-batten is a vertical design created using wide Cedar boards spaced apart with narrower boards (battens) covering the joins. There are no set board or batten widths - various combinations are used to create different looks suitable for large or small scale applications. Fence Boards: Western Red Cedar fence boards can be used in the creation of a solid board fence for complete privacy. 33 CASE STUDY Roofing Case Study The quality of the Cedar throughout was excellent The price and uniqueness of Cedar meant that I was able to install a very high end product at an affordable price Ben Fillmore, owner & builder of the Shed Observatory PROJECT: DIY Shed Observatory using Western Red Cedar Shingles (Decking & Trim) Ben Fillmore s childhood dream of building an observatory was realised when he finally had a garden big enough to build one in. Ben quickly realised that buying a shed from a local DIY store was out of the question. With very little DIY experience, Ben decided to use materials that were easy to work with. Looking for something that looks polished, yet rustic, wood offered the flexibility and appearance that he required. Western Red Cedar Shingles provide excellent insulation to keep the structure from getting too warm or cold. Western Red Cedar is also extremely lightweight a bonus when designing a moving roof. Bevel timber cladding, finished in opaque white contrasts with Western Red Cedar as well as helping reflect heat. Western Red Cedar was also used to build the door and all of the trim around the roof, windows and door. Ben did not fancy the idea of having cold, unwelcoming paving slabs underfoot that might not stay level over the years so he opted for our 40mm thick Cedar decking. 33

39 CASE STUDY Wood Care Case Study We used Sansin SDF as its environmental credentials appealed to us. We selected the ultra saturated tone - Muskoka Red for its richness of colour Alastair McDonald, Director of Design Education PROJECT: University of Southampton builds six metre structure finished in Sansin SDF Sansin Enviro-stains, exclusively available from Silva Timber, are rapidly growing in popularity in the UK. With over 75 colour tones and a host of benefits, this product range not only lasts longer than similar alternatives but also possesses the hard to find environmental credentials demanded by modern specifiers and self-builders. Although it is typically used to provide long-term protection and aesthetics to timber decking, cladding and fencing, Sansin is occasionally used on unique projects such as this one. The University of Southampton Civil Engineering department held its first annual design competition for second year undergraduates, from which the winning design is built at full scale. At 6 metres high, the impressive structure required a large quantity of high quality eco-friendly wood stain to achieve a vibrant and attractive finish. Samples of 7 different Sansin Saturated and Ultra Saturated colour tones were tested before the ideal colour was found. The full size structure was built at the new Boldrewood campus in the University of Southampton for the Faculty Design Show in June. It has attracted significant attention from industry visitors who attended and will remain up for this coming academic year. 39

50 WOOD CARE The importance of Sanding The secret to a perfect finish is to sand the surface before applying any coating. A simple sand allows more stain to penetrate the wood, providing an even, consistent and long-lasting finish. Studies have proven sanding to extend the life of a finish by up to 3 times compared to an unsanded surface.* Remove mill glaze Mill glaze occurs when heat from the planing and kiln drying processes brings water soluble extractives to the surface, causing a glaze-like finish to form. Mill glaze can be removed with a simple sand, allowing the pores underneath to breathe again and accept finish more readily. Create an even surface Sanding removes any minor differences in level and surface texture that may not be immediately visible. An uneven surface will absorb more stain in some areas than others. On horizontal surfaces such as decks, slightly raised areas will receive more wear and dirt and moisture may collect in areas with raised grain. Sanding creates a smooth flat surface that allows the stain to penetrate evenly, prevents dirt and moisture accumulation and allows for even wear. Deeper Porosity Along with removing mill glaze, excess fibre and uneven surfaces, sanding opens up the pores of the wood, allowing finish to penetrate deeper into the cell structure of the wood. 51 Application WOOD CARE Following the preparation stage, stain application is the final, and most rewarding part of the wood protection process. Sansin Enviro Stains can be easily applied in a variety of ways. Brushing Dipping Hand or automated spraying (low pressure or airless) It is recommended to always flood the surface to the point of saturation (approximately 5-6 wet mil). If using a spray application remember to back brush following the grain pattern to ensure consistent penetration.
