6 A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE In use since 1900, Stickley shopmarks represent a history of craftsmanship, quality and evolving styles. 8 ENDURING CRAFTSMANSHIP 6 BEGINNING THEIR CRAFT in the new world, early American cabinetmakers followed England s leads. In the early 18th century, English imports dominated American furniture designs. But gradually our early craftsmen declared their independence and created furniture that was American in its own right. Stickley is furniture rooted in the past, yet designed for the present. Over the years our designs have been modified and many new pieces introduced. Today we still offer the simple, informal and understated sophistication of Stickley s Windsor Chairs and Trestle Tables, and more recently we have added many more designs inspired by styles made popular during the Queen Anne, Chippendale and Hepplewhite periods. From the simple graceful lines to the intricately executed rice carved post or shell carvings on the Philadelphia Queen Anne chairs, lasting quality features are built into each Stickley piece. Our skilled craftsmen create timeless works of art with loving hands, careful attention to detail and an eye for exceptional beauty. Solid Cherry and Mahogany The creation of a Stickley piece begins with the careful selection of the finest solid cherry or mahogany: sides, tops and panels of all pieces are carefully matched for grain and color.the wild black cherry trees from the Adirondacks grow up to 150 feet high and 30 inches in diameter. Cherry is one of the strongest woods in existence. It can be readily tooled, it holds its shape and mellows beautifully with age, developing a rich patina and a warmth of appearance. Honduras mahogany has all the characteristics of an ideal cabinet wood. Grade for grade, mahogany is superior to any other cabinet wood in lengths, widths and freedom from defect, waste and sap. No other wood offers the wide variety of figures created by the exciting twist and turns of the grains. Mahogany is considered by many the king of cabinet woods. The Art of Cabinet Making The making of a piece of Stickley furniture incorporates the most durable methods known to cabinetmaking...techniques reminiscent of those used by eighteenth century craftsmen. Among the unique features are a special ogee foot, dovetailed cross rails, mortise and tenon pinned with dowels, tongue-and-groove glue joining, side-and center-guided drawers, the pinning of chair joints, our own specially designed bed rail and casting receivers, splining of mitred mirror joints, and ship lap planking on the backs of hutches and chinas. These methods have been securely established by the test of time as the standard of excellence. Recognition of Stickley construction methods throughout the furniture industry attest to their worth.the cabinetmaker proudly puts his initials on each piece he builds. As you educate yourself on the ways fine furniture should be made, bear in mind that most of these techniques are used only by Stickley.

9 UNIQUELY STICKLEY Side-Hung and Center Guided Drawers This method guarantees proper alignment of the drawer. The center guide keeps the drawers from skewing sideways. Suspension on the side guides keeps the drawers level even when heavily loaded. There is never any pressure against the bottom side edges, hence no scrape or screech and no excessive friction, pulling or tugging. One can literally stand in a Stickley drawer. Door Joints, Pinned Mortise and Tenon Most Stickley door joints are mortise and tenoned, glued, and pinned with wooden pins. The pins lock the joint supplying additional strength. This joint would hold together even without the use of glue. Splining The splining of the mitred corners of all mirrors provides the strongest possible corner. Stickley Model No is doubled splined and doweled. The chance of a joint ever breaking is minimal. Dovetailed Cross Rails Cross rails dovetailed into end panels strengthen the case from side to side. Separation of the end panels is impossible unless the wood is split apart. This joint is self-locking even before the glue is applied. Tongue and Groove Glue Joining and Matching Lumber Since Cherry varies greatly in grain and color, it is extremely important to match the lumber in every glued-up panel. Proper matching makes the individual boards appear as one solid piece and eliminates the need to bleach or sap stain the lumber. The tongue and groove insures a stronger glue joint and allows for greater finished thickness on all tops. 7 Pinning of Chair Joints All Stickley Windsor and rush-seat chairs are pinned with wooden pins. These pins insure that even after long, hard use the joints will not pull apart. The wedging of arm and back posts into the bottom of the seats is another assurance of a lasting joint.

10 UNIQUELY STICKLEY Resawn and Book Matched Door Panels Resawing is a process of splitting thick lumber into thinner boards. Once split, the halves are opened like a book revealing identical grain. This timeconsuming and labor intensive process assures beautifully grained door panels on all pieces. Bed Construction The long side rails of many beds are locked into a special iron casting. The end rails are mortised and tenoned into the posts and locked with wooden pins. Stickley makes its bed rails of 5/4 hard maple. High poster beds feature authentic bed-bolt construction which, like that of fine antiques, allow the posts to be removed. These unusual features insure a tight assembly with no wobble or rock. Charlotte Bronte Secret compartments have been crafted into many of the Stickley pieces. Their locations are not published. Please ask your salesperson for information. Various Stickley pieces include a tag with instructions for locating and operating the secret compartment. 8 Ship Lap Planking Several cherry pieces are available with optional ship lap planking in the back. Individual pieces are machined, sanded, finished and applied one at a time. They add beauty and additional character to the piece. Bracket Foot Construction All bracket feet are splined, corner blocked and braced. In addition to the usual corner block, a corner brace is rabbeted into the side of the leg pieces. This leg is joined to the case by four screws, providing a solid foundation.

11 Finishing The Stickley finishing process is the crowning moment for each piece of Stickley furniture. Here in the finishing room the innate beauty of the wood is coaxed forth with legendary Stickley care and craftsmanship. Our finishing process entails a complex series of color applications; using clear dyes rather than opaque pigments. Various stains applied by hand are the most important as they penetrate deeply into wood fiber to blend with the natural color tones of the wood. It is not unusual for subtle color tones to emerge creating a symphony of color within each piece. The goal is to finish each piece as an individual item so there are no conveyor belts constraining the finisher. Although this may create subtle color variations between different pieces it is important to know that the color tone seen on a new piece of Stickley will most likely change as the piece ages to a distinctive patina. Changes in the natural color tone in both Cherry and Mahogany will emerge through the clear dyes to create a mellowed appearance in time. Multiple coats of lacquer are applied to seal the color in place and provide a heat, alcohol, and alcohol resistant surface. Meticulous hand rubbing creates various sheen levels specific to the finish you choose. However, a newly applied Stickley finish is only the beginning. In your home, the true patina must be allowed to develop over time. Stickley finishers give you a great start; you continue the finishing with your constant care. Since no finish is immune to the hazards of use, reasonable precautions are advised. Detailed Stickley care guides have been developed specifically for your finish. Request one from your Stickley retailer. Handsanding After intensive machine sanding, every piece of furniture is thoroughly hand sanded - even the insides of the drawers. Excess glue is carefully removed from all joints. All sharp edges are eliminated, joints are flushed, any scratch marks are removed, and the pores of the wood are opened. Final hand sanding is meticulously executed by skilled craftspeople using time tested techniques. The Finishing Touch Hand rubbing is one of the ways in which we are able to achieve the depth and clarity of the legendary Stickley finish. Placing of Glass with Quarter Rounds All glass is secured with cherry quarter rounds, mitred to fit perfectly and fixed in place with small pins that are barely visible thus, the back of the door is almost as beautiful as the front. 9

15 Our magnificent sideboard represents the epitome in design, finish, detail and, of course, Stickley s legendary quality. Details include a crotch mahogany bow front with serpentine cupboard doors. Both drawers and doors have intricate double maple inlay.the front legs have been shaped to follow the contour of the front rail. Each leg features an inlaid maple bellflower at the top and a tulip wood, ebony, and maple banding on the bottom. The solid mahogany top is complimented by a graceful maple inlay. 42 The Windsor Chair, so the legend runs, was first made by a wheelwright who lived in the forest near Windsor Castle in England. One day the king, out hunting, stopped at the wheelwright's cottage to rest. The design of the chair appealed to him and he commissioned the man to build others for use in the castle.windsor Chairs were also the seats provided in Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia when the first Continental Congress met there on September 5, 1774, and again in Independence Hall on May 5, Members of the Second Continental Congress rose from Windsor Chairs and went forward to sign the Declaration of Independence. The Windsor Chairs made by Stickley are faithful reproductions of those made at that time and are as popular today as ever before. 50 In the 18th Century, rice, cotton and tobacco plantations were quickly growing throughout the Southern colonies. It is thought the Rice motif symbolized prosperity and trade and gave its owner a sense of pride and accomplishment. This exquisite hand-carved Rice bed features the spade foot moving upward to the lambs tongues which gracefully make the transition from a square to an octagonal then to a round post. The incised flutes all carry one s eye to the focal point, the Rice design. There are three Rice designs gently wrapping around each post, appearing to have slight movement as though they were in a gentle breeze. The reeded post continues to reach upward to yet another carved leaf form, finally terminating into a beautiful twisting finial which carries through the feeling of movement. The bed rails are tenoned into each post then fastened with long bed bolts as they were in the 18th century.the bed bolts allow for easy assembly and transport. The bed bolt cover plates are of brass and are in keeping with the ornate design of the post. They conceal authentic bed bolts, which allow the bed to be disassembled for ease of placement. 117 WARRANTY & SHIPPING Warranty We want you to be truly pleased with your Stickley furniture, as it becomes an important part of your family heirlooms. All Stickley products except dining chairs are guaranteed for life against manufacturing defects to the original purchaser. Should the furniture fail at any time during the lifetime of the original owner because of workmanship or material (not because of normal use, misuse, or neglect), we will either repair it or replace it upon our discretion.we believe so strongly in the integrity of our workmanship that we guarantee our furniture for life. This warranty does not apply to damage in transit or any damage resulting from abuse, alteration or accident. Stickley warranty does not apply to either company or customer-supplied fabrics. Customer must provide original bill of sale. Dining chairs are warranted for three years from the date of delivery. Slight warpage on solid products and minor checking on veneer tops is considered normal and is not covered under our warranty. Design Stickley reserves the right to change, modify, or improve any designs, specifications and details at its discretion without prior notice. Shipping Whenever possible Stickley trucks will be used for shipping the furniture. It is always blanket wrapped and handled with utmost care. In delivery to areas where our trucks do not travel, Stickley will use its best judgement in the selection of a suitable carrier.the customer must examine all shipments promptly upon receipt and note any damaged or missing pieces on the carrier s freight bill. A claim should then be filed by the customer with the freight company (if shipped other than Stickley truck). Customer bears the cost of returning product to the factory for repairs. 115

Avoid exposure to strong sunlight.this may cause discoloration. When protecting the tops with glass, do not use felt dots, plastic dots, or cork under the glass. Lift objects, do not drag them. Avoid exposure to extreme heat or cold.table pads are advisable. Trivets and placemats are useful, but will not prevent blushing if utensils are extremely hot. Do not use nail polish remover, hair spray or perfume, most of which contain alcohol, near the furniture. Be cautious about placing rubber or plastic products on the furniture since a chemical reaction may cause a deterioration of the finish. Avoid vinyl tablecloths. Use protective pads under telephones, clocks, or radios. Do not use products containing silicone. Never place heavy objects or table pads on freshly polished surfaces. Stickley Furniture Dressing It was Leopold Stickley who first captured the inherent beauty of the aging of cherry and created a special-formula dressing that preserves and beautifies this mellowed finish through successive applications. The dressing gives full play to the color and unique figuration of the wood. It brings out the clarity, transparency, and depth of finish so necessary to obtaining the full artistic effect. Stickley dressing may be used to advantage on other furniture as well as on Stickley pieces. It surpasses other dressings in emphasizing the beauty of choice cabinet wood and in building up the lustrous patina of rare old age. Some finishes are best maintained with a paste wax.
