If you want to know if a company that makes custom doors has returns or rejects, look for a bargain or clearance page on their website. You won t find one on ours. Painting wood does NOT prevent dimensional changes in wood. As humidity varies, so does the moisture content of wood. Yes, painting helps reduce, but does not exclude, moisture exchange. And can painted wood rot? You bet. Just ask anyone with an old house who has torn off rotted pine or poplar gingerbread, balusters or doors. Mahogany has exceptional stability and rot resistance and that is why we have chosen it over other woods. It's also pretty if you're not going to paint. If you have any doubts about the importance of wood choice (painted or otherwise) for an exterior door, I encourage you to do some unbiased research of your own before you spend your money. WHAT MAKES A WOODEN SCREEN DOOR LAST? Select one that is made of a wood that will best withstand the full range of exposure in your neck of the woods (humidity, temperature, moisture, and sun). Select one that is constructed with solid joinery techniques and appropriate proportions for its size. Does it have applied mouldings that could invite moisture problems? If so, can you get a guarantee that the miter joints won't separate and the mouldings won't come apart from the stiles and rails? Select a reasonable finish for your exposure. Select one that has the most reliable method of retaining (and removing) the screen and storm inserts. Can any part of it break or fail? If it does, can it be replaced or fixed? What will it cost? Select a style that is practical for your lifestyle and application. Select the right complement of hardware. Can you be sure your choice is compatible with your door? Can you get assistance with hardware installation and troubleshooting questions? Store it and install it properly. Maintain it properly.

4 COMPARE THESE FEATURES SUSTAINABILITY We appreciate and share your concerns about the environment. How do you evaluate a screen-storm door s true environmental impact? On one side of the equation are the resources used to produce, deliver and install it. On the other side is the energy saved over the span of its useful life. If it lasts longer and performs better, the cost in resources to produce it (as well as the cost in dollars to purchase it) is amortized over a longer period of time. The best strategy for practicing sustainability is to ensure the maximum service life of the installation by installing a longer-lasting, better-functioning screen-storm door with a timeless aesthetic appeal. For a door to be trouble-free and long-lasting it should have strong joints, but it should also stay straight and flat with minimal expansion and contraction. With this in mind, we prefer to use a kiln-dried, pattern-grade hardwood species in the mahogany (Meliaceae) family, characterized by its exceptional stability, durability and rot-resistance. The instability characteristic of woods like pine and poplar is what causes those doors to swell and stick in the summer and shrink in the winter. This cycle of expansion and contraction leads to cracks and loosening of the joints, resulting in a shorter service life. We use mahogany because of its outstanding stability, but it is also beautiful when finished naturally. It does, however, remain our first choice for a painted door as well, as painting does not prevent the problems associated with wood movement. From a manufacturing standpoint, it requires a considerable expenditure of energy and resources to procure, transport, manage and warehouse a variety of wood species. We have chosen to use one species, because it performs better and outlasts the others for this specific application. We have chosen a supplier who ensures that our lumber comes from mills practicing responsible forest management and that all the lumber has been legally harvested. We purchase the most stable, pattern-grade, kiln-dried wood in specified widths and lengths in order to maximize usable wood and minimize waste. Since 1990, our goal has been to build a handcrafted, heirloom quality wooden screen-storm door that will serve a very long and useful life. Our doors have been making homes more beautiful and more energy efficient for many years now. From our inception, we have chosen to keep our shop small, efficient and specialized and to build doors that work better and last longer and than all the rest. CONSTRUCTION Our doors are a full 1¼" thick with deep mortise and tenon joints which are epoxied and pegged through with mahogany pegs. We proportion each door individually, according to its size, and will work with you on fine-tuning the features of our door to complement the features of your entry door. Every door is designed to accept interchangeable screen and storm panels. We offer you a choice of white or dark bronze aluminum screen and storm frames. These sit in a rabbet on the inside of the door, flush with the door and visible only from the inside. We choose not to cover these frames with a wood picture frame moulding like some companies do because we think less is more when it comes to maintenance and life of the door. If we think it's easy to break or can trap dust and moisture, we don't use it in our doors. This is the philosophy that guides us in our choice of door construction techniques and fretwork styles. You won't see delicate suspended ovals or brackets that we think are easily breakable or applied mouldings that invite problems with moisture and decay. Doors get constant use and abuse and exposure, and we design with this in mind. METHOD OF RETAINING & INTERCHANGING PANELS The simplest and least expensive method for the doormaker is to use plastic or metal turn clips which are screwed into the door. These not only detract from the appearance of a custom wooden door but can eventually strip out or break off. Our solution is to drill holes in the frames of the panels and install corresponding metal threaded inserts in the door which will accept brass or stainless steel machine screws and finishing washers. This is not only a more aesthetic, secure and longlasting solution, but it also provides a remedy to sagging and wavy screens by allowing them to be stretched tight before being screwed down. CHARCOAL ALUMINUM SCREENS Our standard is charcoal aluminum screening which will not oxidize like bright aluminum. It is sturdier than fiberglass, which is prone to tearing and can be chewed by insects. We also offer pet screen and Clear Advantage high visibility screen mesh. When your screen needs to be replaced, simply remove it from your door and take it to your local hardware store or glass shop for re-screening. TEMPERED GLASS STORMS We use only eighth-inch clear, tempered safety glass for our storm panels, NOT plastic (Plexiglas), which is easily scratched and can cause an unpleasant distortion of view. Try to imagine what your choice will look like in front of your entry door. If you us a photo of your home and your entry door, we can make suggestions. We can even superimpose our drawings on your photo to help you visualize your options. If you choose a style with a middle rail, we can locate it to best complement the features of the entry door. Giving us photos and a dimensioned sketch of the features of your entry door will enable us to tailor our design to match your door. Instructions for measuring the features of your entry door can be found on our website and will be included with your quote. Be practical. Doors with a middle rail have two removable screens or storm panels, which meet at the bottom portion of the rail. The full view styles have only one large panel. If you have animals or children (or plan to), there is a big advantage to having a style with two panels. You will have the flexibility of leaving the safety glass storm panel in the bottom of the door year-round (which little hands and paws cannot tear or dent), and still have a large screen in the top of the door in the summer. The result is a beautiful view with plenty of light and air, but without the constant aggravation of policing and repairing the screen. Like automobile windshields, safety glass is extremely strong and would crumble if it ever did break. Most of our door styles will accommodate double doors. If you would like assistance selecting a complementary style, supply a photo of your entry doors and your home for context, and we can superimpose drawings of styles on your photo to help you visualize options. Your order should include two doors and an astragal and should indicate the total width and height of the opening for the pair. The astragal is the moulding that seals the pair where they meet in the middle and is attached to the active door. The hardware selection we recommend includes hinges for both doors, a functional latchset and door closer for the active door with matching dummy trim and a pair of slide bolts for the normally closed door. Use your imagination~ Enhance your entryway Structural integrity should also be considered. The stiles of very tall doors are more likely to stay straight if they are joined by a middle rail. Unlike some companies, we tenon, epoxy and peg our middle rails, which adds strength. We will also recommend following certain parameters in sizing elements of the door based on sound design principles.

17 Bay Village Double Doors Style 132 Things to Consider When Selecting a Finish We offer several options when it comes to a finish for your screen-storm door: a primer, suitable for painting; Penofin penetrating oil finish; Sikkens premium 3-coat finish; or unfinished. The first things to consider when selecting a finish for a wooden screen door are exposure and maintenance. You may love the look of unpainted wood, but it requires more work, or a premium finish, to maintain its beauty if it is directly exposed to the elements. If your door is not protected by a porch or roof and is exposed to direct sunlight and rain, paint is the best choice for a durable, low-maintenance finish or, for a natural wood look, we recommend Sikkens premium 3-coat finish. If your door is protected and you want to enjoy the natural beauty of the wood, we offer Hardwood Formula Penofin, a blend of natural oils. We apply the first coat and you apply a maintenance coat in 3 to 6 months, then another in 10 to 12 months and less often thereafter. This finish is easy to clean and apply and each coat further enhances the grain and natural beauty of the wood, deeply penetrating and bonding with the wood fibers. Penofin is a non-film-forming finish, protecting the wood from the inside out, allowing moisture to escape, not remain trapped, as with most other products on the market. You can apply stain, paint or varnish over Penofin after a couple weeks, if desired. Things to Consider When Selecting Hardware Choosing the right hardware is no less important than choosing the right door. For this reason, we ve made it our business to find a selection of hardware that meets the architectural standards of our doors in terms of quality, appearance and functionality. Most of our offerings are not in your local hardware store, where the shelves are stocked with products designed for the prevailing aluminum screen-storm door market. When you purchase your door and hardware from Touchstone Woodworks, you can rest assured that they will be compatible and you will benefit from our knowledgeable service and support before and after the sale. We will not only help you make an appropriate selection of door style, hardware and finish for your home, but we also provide documentation and continued technical support, including repair parts, should you need them down the road. We offer two options that greatly simplify installation: a pre-mortising option of our latchsets or a p re-hung option. With this option, the screen door comes with its own "frame" and the latchset, hinges and strike plate are all pre-mortised, making screen door installation much easier. See our website for more information on this option and to view our selection of hardware and finishes. Based on our research, a varnish product is not a good choice. Conventional spar varnishes or polyurethane finishes provide a closed film coating which in time forms a hard inflexible surface. With exposure to UV rays and continuous cycles of wet and dry, this surface is subject to cracking, blistering and peeling. The result is a finish which requires costly maintenance. A premium product we highly recommend as an alternative to Penofin or a varnish type product is Sikkens. Premium alkyd resins help the Cetol System stabilize the wood grain and build a durable, waterrepellent barrier that is also microporous and flexible. It looks like a rich, satiny, furniture-grade finish. For an upcharge, we will brush on a base coat of Cetol 1 followed by 2 coats of Cetol 23 Plus. This finish will last from 2 to 4 years (or longer) before a maintenance coat is required and comes in a variety of colors (we can supply samples). If you are determined to have a natural wood finish, but have harsh exposure or you want to minimize maintenance, Sikkens is the superior choice. You cannot apply other products over Sikkens. When you order an unfinished door from us, we will provide you with cut-offs from your door for you to experiment with finishes. 15

18 MEASURING & INSTALLATION First determine whether you will be installing a SLAB DOOR or a PRE-HUNG DOOR SLAB DOOR We refer to a door that will be fit and hung into an existing "frame" or casing or jamb as a SLAB DOOR. If you are purchasing a door for an old house and it is an odd size, you most likely will need a slab door. If the house is newer, you probably have a choice of either a slab or pre-hung door. With slab doors, we do offer a pre-mortising option for the latchset, meaning that we will bore all the necessary holes and mortises to accept your choice of one of our Merit or Von Morris mortise latchsets. The installation of a slab door with a pre-mortised latchset will involve fine-fitting the door to the existing opening, doing any necessary trimming to the hinge stile, then marking and mortising the hinges into the door and the existing jamb or casing and hanging the door. Since we will pre-mortise the latchset, it is easily installed with a hand screwdriver. To complete the installation, mark and mortise the strike plate into the jamb and install the door closer. We usually recommend that a professional finish carpenter install a slab door. This job requires an array of tools and techniques many homeowners do not have. If you are unsure about how to measure accurately, you should leave this to the carpenter, as well. For an additional charge, Touchstone Woodworks offers our doors pre-hung. If the home has an existing casing known as brick mould, the Pre-Hung Option is one of several installation options. Most homes built in the last 40 years have standard size doors and a simple 2 wide exterior casing known as brick mould. When you order a prehung door, we will supply thick mahogany exterior casing 1 18" 2 " Brick mould 1 14" to replace the footprint of your existing casing. We will do all the mortising of the hardware in the door and the casing for the latchset, hinges and strike. The pre-hung option is not always a viable option for old houses or newer homes where the original door trim is more elaborate and architectural. In this case, a slab door should be ordered. If the existing casing is comprised of plain, flat trim boards, the pre-hung option is probably a viable option. Send us photos and we can advise you. In addition to doors pre-hung in exterior casing, we also offer doors pre-hung inside a jamb, suitable for applications where this would be the only door in the opening, such as on an outside wall of a porch, enclosed patio or breezeway. The pre-hung option typically makes wooden screen door installation much easier, requiring fewer specialized tools and a lower skill level compared to those required for fitting and hanging a wooden slab door. Many handy homeowners will possess the tools and skills to install these units and will find it unnecessary to hire a skilled finish carpenter. Builders and remodelers will find this an efficient and laborsaving option. 19 18 roundover What are the options if the existing casing is less than 1-14 thick? OPTION 1: No modifications needed to mount 3 X 3 mortise hinges Brick Mould Touchstone Door Hinge Stile Brick Mould Most newer homes have standard casing called brick mould. Using the hinges we supply, no modifications are necessary to mount our slab doors if your existing moulding is in good condition and at least 1 deep. Because we round over our edges, the difference in depth is visually minimized. If there is not a roof over the door, add a drip edge to top of brick mould casing. OPTION 2: Add screen mould here Brick Mould Brick Mould A very inexpensive and simple solution to increase the depth of the casing to match the door is to apply standard 14 thick screen mould (available at most building supply stores) to the outside face of the casing. This should be done after the door has been hung and it should be primed and painted. The slide bolts will be mounted on the inside of the normally closed door, one at the top and one at the bottom of the lock stile. The top bolt will need to be longer on very tall doors in order to reach them without the aid of a stool or ladder. For example, if the highest you can reach is 80 inches and your door is 90 inches tall, you could select an 8-inch bolt for the bottom, but you would need at least a 12-inch bolt for the top.

28 DELIVERY Most orders are ready to ship in four to six weeks, but lead time depends on our existing backlog when the order is placed. Allow for more lead time for larger orders and during our peak seasons in the spring and fall. When your order is scheduled to ship, we will notify you and provide detailed receiving instructions. If you do not see a design that suits you, we can work with you on a custom design. We can provide you with custom drawings of styles designed specifically with your entryway in mind. In addition to providing us with the measurements on our forms, you should also provide us with photos of your home and entry door, as well as a sketch which includes measurements of the distinctive elements of your door. (See instructions for How to Measure the Features of Your Entry Door on our website.) If you have a specific style in mind, we can give you a quote if you provide a sketch, photo, architectural drawing or clip a picture from a magazine or catalog. PACKAGING CUSTOM DESIGNS SHIPPING When we ship via motor freight, your doors will be carefully packaged in individual crates. In most cases, the screens and storms will be secured into the door, which will be completely enclosed in corrugation and surrounded by a wooden crate. Your hardware will be shipped separately via UPS. Most crated doors weigh between 110 to 130 pounds. We take great care in protecting your purchase and in selecting the carrier. Our doors ship prepaid motor freight, meaning we include the cost of shipping in your order and we pay the freight company. Due to minimum freight charges, the cost of shipping two doors is slightly more than shipping one. The shipping cost per unit decreases as the number of units increases. We will include freight costs in our quote and will estimate the charges based on residential delivery unless you request otherwise. We will notify you about a week before shipping and again the day we ship with a PRO number and contact information. With a residential delivery, the freight carrier will call the number you specify to make arrangements prior to delivery. Definitely, someone must be there to receive the shipment and help unload. Also, it is VERY important for the person receiving to carefully inspect the shipment and to clearly note on the delivery receipt any signs of visible handling or damage. It is very unlikely to receive compensation for damage if the shipment was signed for without such a notation.
