week 5 1 Ribbit Worksheet This Activity Will Help Your Child Count, compare, and add numbers Supplies 2 Ribbit worksheets 2 lily pad sheets Number cards Scissors How Do I Do It? Game 1: The More Game 1. Cut out all the frogs from the Ribbit sheets. You and your child should each have your own lily pad sheet. 2. Place the number cards face down and have your child pick a card (you can use the dots, numerals, or number words). Ask your child to place that number of frogs on his/her lily pad sheet. Now you pick a card and place that number of frogs on your lily pad sheet. Ask: AAWho has more frogs? AAHow many frogs are there altogether? 3. Help your child count as needed. For example: AAI have 3 here. Over here there are, 5, 6, 7. There are 7 altogether!. Repeat this game several times. Game 2: One More, One Less 1. Cut out the plus and minus cards from the Ribbit sheets. Mix up the cards and place them face down in one pile. Use one lily pad sheet and place three frogs on lily pads to start the game. 2. Take turns with your child picking a card from the pile. If a plus card is drawn, add one frog to the lily pads. If a minus card is drawn, take one frog away. Each time ask: AAHow many frogs are there now? 5 2 Family Engagement Toolkit: Using PBS KIDS Media in Preschool Homes 2015 WestEd. All rights reserved.

Bug Catcher week 5 2 Pre-game Activity Supplies Red and white counting beans, or other objects with different sides, such as coins or cards [The instructions will refer to beans.] Build Background In the online game Bug Catcher, your child will need to estimate whether the number of objects in one group is more than the number of objects in another group. Before starting the game, try this activity: 1. Place beans into two groups: four red beans on one side and two white beans on the other side. Ask: AAAre there more red beans or more white beans? Count the number of beans in each group with your child. Then say: AAFour is more than two, so there are more red beans. 2. Repeat a few times with different numbers of beans in each group. 3. If this activity is easy for your child, ask: AAHow many more [red] beans are there? Demonstrate how they can figure this out by lining up the beans, then counting the number of beans that don t pair up.. Try mixing up the beans so that they are no longer separated by color. Start with a large difference in the number of each color (for example, 8 white beans and 2 red beans). Then try numbers that are closer together. Encourage your child to sort the beans by color and then count to check his or her answer. Family Engagement Toolkit: Using PBS KIDS Media in Preschool Homes 2015 WestEd. All rights reserved. 5 3

week 5 2 Online Game Getting Ready to Play Turn on your device and select the game Bug Catcher. Tell your child: AAIn this game, George is catching bugs of different colors. You re going to help him figure out which color group has more bugs. Play the Game Click PLAY and have your child listen as the Man with the Yellow Hat gives directions. Say: AALook at all the bugs. Which group do you think has more bugs? Count the bugs with your child to check his or her answer. Then have your child click on the button for that color bug. Help your child move back and forth to collect the bugs. As your child continues to play, ask how he or she is figuring out which group has more bugs. Check if he or she is guessing (choosing without careful thought), estimating, or counting the bugs. If they are guessing, tell him or her to look closely at all the bugs. If they are counting, encourage them to try estimating first before he or she counts. If the game is easy for your child, ask: AAHow many more [blue] bugs are there? 5 Family Engagement Toolkit: Using PBS KIDS Media in Preschool Homes 2015 WestEd. All rights reserved.

Online Games week 5 3 Turn on your device and access to s games. Ask your child questions while he or she is playing the following games. Some suggestions are provided below. Discuss the answers with him or her. Mark the checkboxes ( ) for the games that your child played to. Ribbit As your child adds and removes frogs, ask: AAHow many frogs do you have now? AAHow many will you have if you add one more? AAHow many will you have if you take one away? Fair Shares If your child has difficulty understanding the game, ask: AAIf I give [one] treat(s) to the gray dog, how many will be left for the brown dog? Is this fair? Encourage your child to alternate giving one treat to one dog, then one treat to the other dog, until all the treats are gone. Once your child has distributed all of the treats, ask: AAHow many did you give the gray dog? How many did you give the brown dog? Do they both have the same number of treats? Bug Catcher When your child is estimating which group has more bugs, ask: AAHow can you tell that there are more [blue] bugs? Count the bugs together to check if his or her estimate is correct. Ask: AAIs [four] more than [two]? Family Engagement Toolkit: Using PBS KIDS Media in Preschool Homes 2015 WestEd. All rights reserved. 5 5

You may move treats from one dog to the other until they have the same amount. First click on a treat, and then click on one of the dogs. Click on the whistle when all the treats have been distributed. The game starts with 2 dogs and 2 treats. If children complete a screen correctly without making any errors, the number of treats increases. After four screens, the number of dogs increases to 3. If children make a mistake at any point, that screen is repeated. Screen 1: Screen 2: Screen 3: Screen : Screen 5: Screen 6: Screen 7: Screen 8: Children share 2 treats with 2 dogs. Children share treats with 2 dogs. Children share 6 treats with 2 dogs. Children share 8 treats with 2 dogs. Children share 3 treats with 3 dogs. Children share 6 treats with 3 dogs. Gabriela tells them which vegetable to plant in each box, and when to water them. Family Engagement Toolkit: Using PBS KIDS Media in Preschool Homes 2015 WestEd. All rights reserved. 5 11

Hungry Pirates In this game, children find locations on a grid and a map by following directional cues and counting Family Engagement Toolkit: Using PBS KIDS Media in Preschool Homes 2015 WestEd. All rights reserved.

Hat Grab In this game, children help George collect hats of two different colors. The circles show which color hats to collect. Click on a hat to grab it. Children are then asked which color hat was collected the most or the least. Hats appear on the graph as George grabs them. Click on a yellow button to answer the question. If children have collected the same number of both color hats, they will be asked to count how many of each were collected. During the first round, the people are only wearing two colors of hats. In the following rounds, some people may be wearing hats of a third color. George does not grab those hats. Family Engagement Toolkit: Using PBS KIDS Media in Preschool Homes 2015 WestEd.
