3 Aims 1. To show understanding of the environment around where children live and how they can improve it 2. To improve health by learning through the environment Objectives 1. To find out what Urban Blights are, how they impact the immediate surroundings and possible solutions to the problems. 2. To get a basic understanding of common living things, how they live and survive. Contents of Chest 1. Pictures of urban blights (1-7) 2. Ollie recycles 3. Rats revenge 4. Recycling Presentation 5. Info sheets on caterpillars 6. Info sheets on moths, bats, bees, trees 7. Bobbley s caterpillar game 8. Bat masks 9. Moth masks 1

4 Urban Blights Concept To show understanding of the differences of: What urban blights are? Why they happen? The impacts and what can be done to prevent them. What does urban blight mean? In the classroom the teacher makes a list of all the local (in their neighbourhood) good/nice open places children visit, or play or hang around in with their friends. Then list all the bad/horrible open places they visit, play or hang around. Go back over each of the places and find out why it is good or bad to go to e.g. you can go and take your bikes, it s clean, its safe. Or its unsafe, older children hangout, it s vandalised. Hand out laminate copies of urban blights. (Treasure chest images 4-10 ) Ask the question would you want to live in the good or the bad area? Discuss the differences. Address the next questions Why people do it? What impacts it has on the local community? What can be done to prevent it? Please note Reuse Reduce Recycle as part of question 3. 5 Environmental Games Game One Caterpiller toggles (Image 1) Aims To promote health, whilst learning about wildlife and the environment. Hungry Caterpillar Game Story/Learning Outcome During the caterpillar phase of a butterfly s life, the caterpillar must eat as much as it can. In doing so it increases its size, preparing to form a chrysalis and getting ready for the transition into a butterfly. The caterpillar is essentially an eating machine! Set Up Two lines are drawn on the playground approximately 30 feet apart. Two lots of four cones and one bucket are spread evenly in a row between the lines. The buckets should be in the middle and will contain an appropriate number of leaf pictures. The pupils are split into two teams with each team positioning an equal number of players behind each line. On the word go one player from each team will run from the one line to the other, dodging in and out of the cones and picking up a leaf from the bucket. When they reach the opposite line they turn around. One of their team members holds on to their waist and the pair run back to the next line, again dodging in and out of the cones, and this time it is the player at the back who picks up a leaf. The game continues in this way, with one team member joining each time they reach the opposite line, until the whole team has formed a large caterpillar. The new player must always pick up a leaf as they pass the bucket. If at any point the caterpillar splits, the team must stop until it has reformed. The first team to cross the line as a fully formed caterpillar wins! Physical Outcome Running, bending, team co-ordination. 3

7 Environmental Games Game Two Aims To promote health, whilst learning about wildlife and the environment. Waggle Dance Game Story/Learning Outcome Bumble bees collect pollen from flowers to take back to the hive to feed to the young larvae. The collected pollen will be different colours depending on the type of flower. When a Bumble bee has found a good source of pollen it tells the other bees the direction to the flower by dancing the pattern of the journey. The bees watch the dance, which is repeated a few times, and then they fly off to find the flower. Set Up 3 corners of the playground are defined as flowers with a bucket of pollen in each one. The pupils all wait in an area defined as the hive. One pupil is chosen to be the worker bee and is given a card containing a pattern which they must dance to the other bees. When the bees think they know which direction to fly off, they run and collect the pollen from that flower and return. All those who have chosen the right route and picked the correct pollen stay in the next round. Repeat the game, swapping the roles. Physical Outcome Running, bending, twisting. You could make your own costume accessories with the children. 5
