4 WHEN VIDEO GAMES-MEDIA & CULTURE CONVERGE DISTANT CULTURES CAN INFLUENCE ONE ANOTHER Interactiviley, video games, allows us to alter culture by commenting or talking back to cultures near & far in real time. This convergence has impacted social change in distant countries, albeit slowly. CULTURE: THE WAY WE CHOOSE TO EXPRESS OURSELVES Video games give us the ability to feel what we want to feel.. We control our destiny with the control. VIDEO GAMES ARE ABLE TO CROSS CULTURAL, INTERNATIONAL BORDERS Games help us live in another reality. International borders can be torn down by video games since they re so popular all over the world. 4
5 VIDEO GAMES ADAPTED AS MOVIES ARE SOME OF HOLLYWOODS BIGGEST FLOPS Video games innovative and unique narrative structures propelled Hollywood to get in on their action. It is no secret: Hollywood s adaptation of video games have mostly failed. Will Ready Player 1 succeed? TWO ELEMENTS OF A VIDEO GAME: Goals Feedback GOALS The goal is the specific result that you as a player will work to achieve. 5
6 FEEDBACK The variety and intensity of feedback is the most important difference between digital and non-digital games. FEEDBACK IS MOTIVATING The feedback system tells players how close they are to achieving the goal. It can take the form of points, levels, a score or a progress bar. Real feedback serves as a promise to the players that the goal is definitely achievable, and it provides motivation to keep playing. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE IN THE STATE OF FLOW. It means you re playing on the edge of your skill level. always on the brink of falling off, and if you fall off, you feel the urge to climb back on. 6
7 WHEN YOU ARE IN A STATE OF FLOW YOU ARE FEELING HAPPY. When you are in a state of flow you want to stay there: both quitting and winning are equally unsatisfying outcomes. SEXUALITY & GENDER IDENTIFICATION ARE ALSO IMPACTED BY VIDEO GAMES MEDIA TECHNOLOGY CONVERGENCE LGBTQ issues and those concerning women s rights are given more visibility, causing citizens in some countries to mobilize for their civil rights. Can video games ignite something similar to an Arab Spring revolution in developing countries? 7
