3 SOME FACTS ABOUT old IRISH CURRENCY The old Irish currency was known as the Punt During the 1960 s the currency was decimalised which means that money was divided up into tens and hundreds The changeover to decimal currency happened on Decimal Day, 15th February 1971 On 1st January 1999 the Euro became the currency of the Eurozone countries including Ireland On 1st January 2002 the old Irish Coins and notes were replaced by the Euro that we use now Old Irish pound coins and notes ceased to be legal tender on 9th February 2002 The half-penny coin (½p) This coin stopped being used in January The 1985 and 1986 half-penny coins are quite rare. The two pence coin (2p) Like the half-penny and penny, the design of the 2p showed a celtic bird with knot work. The most ever made was in 1971 when 75.5 million were made. In 1976 just 5.4 million were minted. The ten pence coin (10p) This coin had a picture of a salmon on it. In 1993 it was reduced in size and the direction of the salmon was also reversed! The most 10p coins ever made was in 1993 when 80.1 million of the new smaller sized coin were made. The least amount was in 1973 when only 2.5 million coins were minted. The fifty pence coin (50p) This was a 7-sided coin and the 7 sides are not straight - they are curved around the corner so the coin can roll easily! The design showed a woodcock. The 1982 coin is quite hard to find in good condition. In 1988 the city of Dublin celebrated it s Millennium year and 5 million special edition 50p coins were made. A further 50,000 boxed commemorative coins were also issued. The penny coin (1p) The rarest 1p coins are the 1974 coins as only 10 million were minted that year. The most ever made was in 1996 when million were minted! The five pence coin (5p) The 5p has a picture of a bull. In 1992 the coin was made smaller. The least amount ever made was in 1985, 4.2 million, and the most in 1992 when 74.5 million of the smaller coin were minted. The twenty pence coin (20p) The 20p was not introduced until A few experimental coins were made in 1985 and these coins are very rare and valuable. In 1986 there were 50.4 million 20p coins made and in 1999 only 11 million. The pound coin ( 1) In 1990 the pound 1 coin was introduced to replace the pound note. The picture on the coin is of an Irish red deer million were made in 1990 while in the year 2000 just 4 million were minted. In 2000 to celebrate the Millennium year, a commemorative 1 coin was issued. 5 million of these were produced and an additional 90,000 boxed commemorative coins were issued.

4 The one pound ( 1) note featured a picture of Queen Medhb the legendary Queen of Connaught in Irish mythology. In the background is a pre-christian geometric design. Legend has it that Queen Medhb is buried in a 12 metre (40 foot) high stone cairn on the summit of Knocknara in County Sligo. In 1990 the 1 note was replaced by the 1 coin. The five pound ( 5) note had a picture of Johannes Scotus Eriugena an Irish philosopher, theologian and poet from the 9th century. In the background is the letter A from the start of Psalm 17 in the Book of Durrow. Eriugena was a well known Greek scholar. In the year 845 he moved to France where he lived for approximately 30 years. The ten pound ( 10) note shows a picture of Dean Jonathan Swift the poet and satirist with an image of the Dublin City coat of arms beside him. Swift was born in 1667 in Dublin, he studied at Trinity College and was Dean of St Patrick s Cathedral in Dublin from 1713 until he died in His best known book is probably Gulliver s Travels in which the main character Lemuel Gulliver sets out on voyages to different lands including the land of Lilliput where a race of tiny people less than 6 inches tall live. The twenty pound ( 20) note had a portrait of the poet William Butler Yeats with a representation of the mythological hero Cú Chulainn in the background. WB Yeats was born in Dublin but spent his childhood in Merville, Co. Sligo. In 1904 he was a co-founder of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in In 1924 he was chairperson of a committee set up to select a set of designs for the first currency of the Irish free state. He died in France in 1939 and his body was later brought back to Ireland where he s buried in Drumcliffe, Co. Sligo. The fifty pound ( 50) note showed the blind Irish harper and composer Turlough O Carolan. He was born in Co. Meath in 1670 but moved to Roscommon in He was blinded by smallpox at the age of 18 but already showed talent in poetry and music. He spent his life travelling around Ireland composing and performing his music. He is buried in Co. Roscommon and the O Carolan Harp Festival takes place there each year commemorating his life and work.

6 What does OUR club DO with the money WE COLLECT? Here s a checklist for what you should do next: Place all coins and banknotes collected in the white bag(s) that have been provided Fill in the Lodgement Form for each white bag of coins and banknotes you have collected Put a copy of the Lodgement Form INSIDE each bag Take a copy of the Lodgement Form and post it to: Supported by: Mark Hughes, Special Olympics Ireland, 4th Floor, Park House, North Circular Road, Dublin 7 This is to ensure we have an accurate record of all lodgements made by your club and can make sure you receive the correct amount after the money is counted Write the name of the club on the outside of the bag and seal the bag Bring the bag(s) to your nearest Ulster Bank branch What happens AFTER THE MONEY is lodged? Special Olympics will arrange to collect the bags from your Ulster Bank branch. Special Olympics will advise you of the total amount collected by your club.
